So basically you rely on the opinion on a sole so-called journalist to bash the AM V8 without driving it, but OTOH you choose to disregard virtually all the notorious ones when they claim the R8 is marginally faster than the 997 CS on major European circuits?

Your train of thought fails to take in consideration one major variable: the driver.

So, Dimis owns 997 GT3? Then it is normal that he is faster then R8 on Hockenheim.

We are talking here about 997S, NOT about 997 GT3 or GT3 RS.
On ALL EU track according to ALL major magazines R8 is marginally faster then 997S.

So, for you R.Meaden, Horst von Saurma and Alain Prost are bad drivers since in their hands R8 is clearly faster then 997S? OK, I guess...

Regarding REAL world acceleration on the autobahn I can tell you one thing-R8 and 997S are about the same. It will depend much more on the driver then on the car.

I'm not supposed to be talking on behalf of dimis, but all I'm saying is that dimis raced with a lot of Porsches including 997S. He was surprised to see that the R8 couldn't really manage not even with a cayman S!!!! His GT3 is another story...

    Re: Audi R8 gets a 5.2L engine ?!

    If you want drama......

    Re: Audi R8 gets a 5.2L engine ?!

Hmmm... so that's what will happen to me when I race against an R8 with my 997S??? Guys, lets get serious. If I search the net I'm sure that I'll find another video that shows a 997S smashing an R8 on the track. If someone thinks that video is a conclusion... then I guess a lot of people that own and race with a 997S are probably dead... . Don't forget that there's a video on the net showing J. Clarkson smashing a 997 GT3 on the track when he tried to test drive it. NOBODY said the car was crap though... Actually they said exactly the opposite!!

    Re: Audi R8 gets a 5.2L engine ?!

Georgie, why can't you accept the 997S for what it is and want to make it the only car worth owning that beats all the other ones? The R8 is faster but is newer and has only two seats. The AMV8 is faster (8.03 SA NBR) because it can be fit with corsa tires from the factory due to its dry sump engine.

The 997S is a great car for what it is, slightly more sport than GT than the competition. But it is not the car you say it is, everybody else is showing it to you, including many Porsche fans and 997 owners.

FYI most people here consider that NO car is perfect, all are compromises, at any price point. This is what makes it interesting, else we would all be driving this so called perfect car.

If you need validation for your purchase, talk to your dealer, not to car enthusiasts on a DISCUSSION forum.

    Re: Audi R8 gets a 5.2L engine ?!

I'm not so sure what the issue is here. The figures speak for themselves. Whether you think a few 10th's of a second is important or not, both cars are remarkably similar in performance and in the real world it won't make the slightest bit of difference. On the track things get a little clearer but again, when two cars such as these are pitched against each other in close combat, it falls to the driver to extract the differences. Thats it.

All that remains is to decide whether you like the more expensive R8 over the cheaper 997S, quite simple really.

The thing with the R8 is that it's new technology. It's this technology that makes it stand out against the 997. People like the refreshing change the R8 has brought to the motoring world, the 911, well take away the traditionalism attached to the breed, it's just another 911, there's nothing earth shattering about the latest design, but it's still an extremely adept car.

Take our visit to the Ring and Spa just over a week ago for instance, one of the guys I was with was in his 2008 R8. Both at the Ring and Spa people were drawn to it, not the Porsche, the Audi. I'm talking about my C2S now, not the GT3/GT2's/RS's etc as there is still quite a cult following (I'm one of them). I don't recall anyone asking me for a PAX lap, but the Audi was doing demo laps for all and sundry.

I guess what galls the new breed of 997 owners (myself included) is that now that we have finally aspired to actually owning a 911, the focus has moved on to the newer breed of sports car, a la R8. The fact that the R8 costs more, weighs more, has more power, more cubic capacity, but yet the cars are so similar in performance, the 911 owner holds onto this thought and can't understand why it's not annihilating the Porsche, therefore the Porsche must be better, when in actual fact there is nothing in it. It just shows that the Porsche is still able to compete. That in itself is amazing in my eyes.

    Re: Audi R8 gets a 5.2L engine ?!

I do not fully agree with you. Why? Your point about 997 been still amazing is very subjective one...

R8 and 997S(or any 997 save GT2/3 or Turbo) are more or less on similar level performance(acceleration) wise but, they are pretty different cars in overall drive feel.
You like 997, I on the other hand like R8 more(I am talking here about drive feel). Both are moderately demanding for ESP off driving, IMHO for driving both very fast some kind of PDE or Audi Track Experience is more then reccomended thing.

I do not doubt at all that FL 997 will be excellent car. Just it is very good that true sportscar enthusiast has more options these days-R8 and AM V8 Vantage are excellent cars as well.

Do not forget one thing-drive feel and passion is IMO key elements in our sportscar choice. New M3 is as fast(acceleration wise) as R8 or 997S. Just, is it as involving to drive or just to look at? NO. But, it is cheaper. Many M3 owners and fans think that it is amazing that their car is as fast as 997S or R8, for far less money...

Well of course it it. All individual views and opinions about cars are subjective and that was sort of my point. Both cars are great. Some like the more rugged handling of the 997 and the way it involves the driver, some prefer the safer feeling R8 provides, it's all subjective.

The 997 is a very capable car, even with the "outdated" design and the absence of a "space frame" it still does the job for many. The point I make about the R8 is that with all this amazing technology it only just (figuratively speaking) beats the 997S and it should be commended for this. Lets face it, the Audi engineers only had to beat a 40 yr old design didn't they.

    Re: Audi R8 gets a 5.2L engine ?!

Kreso,i think the most people here know all this....but the thing in my opinion is Not what the magazine said...because in this case we must also believe that..is that right?...

Scifrog, I never believed that a 997S is the fastest car in the world nor the most beautiful. I think you misunderstood me. Why is it so bad believing that a car is a bit faster than another one? I guess that you think I'm saying all that because I own a 997S and IT HAS to beat all others. Hell no... I can only tell you that I went to place a deposit for a brand new 997GT3 some weeks ago, but I changed my mind for the reason that my car is really new and it's not the right time to sell it. I'm gonna go for the next generation 911 TT in a couple of years. So I really think you got me wrong. . I agree with the fact that no car is perfect!!! You're absolutely right. And to be honest I don't care if an R8 is faster than a 997S or if a 997S is faster than an R8. But depending on personal experiences with friends and race events I really feel that when a car is faster than another I need to say it. That's all. Oh, and regarding this purchase validation... I can assure you I have it every day... Don't need dealers...

According to German magazines like AMS, Sport Auto, Auto Zeitung and Auto Bild Sportscar Edition R8 is faster then 997S on Hockenheim, Nurburgring GP track and Oschersleben(all times by R8 were achieved with normal Pirelli P Zero tires). So, either are all German journalists total morons or you are simply said wrong...
UK's EVO results on Bedford speaks for itself...
Italian Quattroroute results very pretty similar as well(R8 faster), driver was Alain Prost...

So, you are total die hard 997 fan? OK. BUT, then you are on the wrong forum, rennteam is NOT for total die hard fans of any model or brand.

    Thanks, Kreso.

The reason this whole thread started was the comment re the 997C2S/C4S "SMOKING" the R8! SMOKED means OBLITERATED. Bad choice of words in my opinion. There may be a tenth of a sec in it, either way. My experience tells me I'm marginally quicker on the Track and Street with my R-Tronic.

They're both capabale vehicles, BUT, let's just refrain from using ridiculous illogical statements.

Do we seriously think Audi developed the R8 without a performance benchmark like the C2S/C4S?? Let's not be silly.

Besides, I believe the R8 is the first of many variants, designed to tackle other leaders in other segments. Time will tell... Let the game of "Leapfrog" begin!

It will have a N/A V10, so no turbochargers, at least not yet.
