Sometimes it's not worth it to sell the car to a private owxner, considering that a dealer trade-in will save thousands in sales tax.
Yes, it has a huge effect in states with sales tax offset on trade-in.
Considering 997S price levels the private buyer would have to pay you $5K - $6K MORE than dealer trade-in just to equal the trade-in offer when factoring-in the trade-in tax benefit. Unfortunately the dealers also realize this and peg their offer accordingly
. But if you've got good rapport with your dealer, they will let you sell "through" the dealer to a private buyer of your choosing. It's legal, worth asking your dealer about as it could put an extra $5K in your pocket....er, rephrased more accurately it will reduce your losses by $5K mentioned above.
I am contemplating C4S coupe to replace my C2S... Ill get a set of snows and drive a bit longer into the snow months. Very tempted by a 997TT but I simply can't yet stomach an MSRP north of $125K. In the meantime I've got a factory 500 HP Shelby GT500 Cobra en route in Sept. as a raucous diversion.
If anyone's interested, as my own informal survey of the 997 Turbo-release-effect on availability of used 997/997S in the USA:
I bookmarked AutoTrader.com before and after the 997 Turbo release as follows---SEARCH CRITERIA: Nationwide, ALL Porsche 911 of model year 2005 and 2006 from $0 to $175,000. (includes all 996, 997 body styles including 996 Turbo S):
On JUNE 01 2006 there were 380 cars offered.
On JUNE 26 2006 there are 429 cars offered....probably another dozen or two will enter the pre-owned market over the next couple weeks after remaining 997TT launch deliveries.
