Re: Talking of the Corvette Z06 and the 997 Turbo...

    throt:

I would take any 911/BMW over any Z, the lap times are irrelevant when you include quality, taste and class.

Been and past all that "its fastest BS" stuff when I was in my early teens buying superbikes...

I agree and appreciate your comments.  And I have been in my teens with super bikes myself and souped up muscle cars...but road racing with precision and skill against competitors is far from being juvenile.  It is a sport of usually wealthy gentleman that takes immense talent, skill, intelligence and lots of practice (like any sport).  I agree, going out on a public road to just "nail" the thing is more akin to a teenager.  But driving a car at the absolute limit at a rack track with the skill and precision required of a pro-athelete is not.  Once you have done THIS, road drivng loses it's fun.  Mario Andretti was often asked if he drives fast on the street and he said he does the speed limit because he could care less.

If that is the case then everyone in F1, ALMS, Porsche Cup and so have no taste, class and are a bunch of juvenilles.

Re: Talking of the Corvette Z06 and the 997 Turbo...

@95jersey: of course, I agree that once one has tasted track driving, trying to drive fast on the street cannot compare. However, driving on winding mountain roads, driving in scenic places (like a coastal drive) can give their own pleasures which are not about driving fast but instead about enjoying the road in a car that helps one appreciate it. My point is track driving isn't the only kind of fun you can have on four wheels.

Re: Talking of the Corvette Z06 and the 997 Turbo...

I get A LOT of enjoyment out of driving nice winding roads like Easy mentions. It's about the taking the time not trying to do your best one... Even doing the speed limit, which btw is stupid low in N.A., does a lot for me. It's not about speed at all, that's why any car is fast enough for me really. That does not mean i want to take race driving lessons and go tracking as soon as i can.  I want to tackle the Nurnburgring asap, especially now seeing as the stupid government may have ruined it forever... Everyone enjoys their wheels and passion in a different way.

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

Re: Talking of the Corvette Z06 and the 997 Turbo...

The guys at the start of this thread talking out of their rear and supposing that the Z06 will run a near 8 minute time and their kin are exactly the only reason why I *don't* want to own a Turbo.  The car itself... on the other hand....

    Smiley

For the record, here's the Z06's most recent "official" Ring' lap of 7 Minutes 22 seconds (verified), significantly better than the Turbo, Carrera GT... etc.  (And costs less than a base Carrera S brand new with the full leather interior pkg.)

I still want a Turbo... but doubt I'll sell the Z to get one. Smiley

Re: Talking of the Corvette Z06 and the 997 Turbo...

You do realise that this thread started back in 2006 so the comments made back then were in reference to older models .... those guys would need to be clairvoyants to be making comments back in 2006 that would still automatically hold true in 2011.

My post wasn't about referencing facts / times of the past -- so much as pointing at the nose-up presumptuous attitude the Porsche guy's seemed to have about the Z06 - the attitude that puts me off wanting to be associated with them by owning a Porsche.

[Not that there aren't negative connotations to having a Vette.]

Also, I wasn't sure if the new Z06 time/video had been posted... and it's pretty notable.

2012 Z06 (same car, with updated GM suspension and tires, otherwise - no changes, same engine, chassis, weight, power, etc.)

    2012 Z06 - 7.22.6

That's 4 seconds off the 7:18 Porsche 911 GT2 RS .. which costs over 4x as much sticker to sticker!

    And better than...

    7:28.71 Porsche Carrera GT
    7:32.02 Porsche 911 GT2 (2008)
    7:32.92 Ferrari 458 Italia
    7:33 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 997MkII

    And obviously many more;
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_N%C3%BCrburgring_Nordschleife_lap_times

The irony here is that I'd prefer to own a good old 997.1 TT over my C6Z any day personally [AWD & living in Canada], but I registered to comment on the bad taste in my mouth left by the response of the presumably "Porsche Guys" back at the start of the thread.

Re: Talking of the Corvette Z06 and the 997 Turbo...

I think the 'nose up presumptuous atttude' you refer to is not a general view and I would say it is more perceived than real.

Some may dislike the Z06 while others will respect it for its capabilities.

Here are a couple of recent threads on RT showing a range of views that Porsche fans have expressed of Corvette's recent achievements. It might make you reconsider your initial view.

Re: Talking of the Corvette Z06 and the 997 Turbo...

I think corvettes are really cool, but not everyone can look good in one, and pull it off...

I am not a big fan of the chrome accents on the new ones, but it looks like they are not the only manufacturer following this trend.

Yup, I am talking about how it looks.. cos I am not an expert on the performance :-)
