According to one market forecaster, Porsche will produce

about 10,000 Cayman's a year. Since it is priced between the Boxster S and Carrera, I guess Porsche had to give the car some exclusivity to make it attractive. For comparison, Porsche will produce 25,000 Boxster's; 40,000 Cayenne's and a zillion 911's next year.

To add insult to injury, in September 2005 they will introduced their luxury sedan. MB move over; here comes Porsche the former small exclusive specialist company. Soon one will not be able to cross a street without avoiding an oncoming Porsche.

Re: According to one market forecaster, Porsche will produce

The sedan will be introduced this autumn? Interesting, seems your sources are pretty accurate...like the production figures you mentioned.

A zillion 911? I doubt it. And you forget one thing: there are a lot of different 911 variants like the 997 Carrera, Carrera S, the Cabs, the GT3, the Turbo, etc. Of course the may build 30000 911 per year, maybe. But this includes ALL variants. Take a guess how many F430 Ferrari will produce next year? I think buying a Viper would be more exclusive.

If you want exclusivity, power and fun, buy a Lamborghini Murcielago.

Fiat just "ate" Maserati. Dumb move. I just hope for you guys that the dollar gets stronger again, otherwise the F430 will be a VERY exclusive product in the US (if you get my point... ) and Ferrari will be in financial trouble sooner or later because they URGENTLY need a good US market.

BTW: today I joined a little group on a safety training track for some fast rounds. We had minus(!) 3* Celsius outside temperature, the asphalt temperature was minus 7*C.
I did a 120* curve at around 180 kph on my winter tires without even the slightest glimpse of instability or traction problems. If I would own a Ferrari, I would probably end up looking at it in my garage. I'm not THAT old, Nick. Not yet.

Hey Nick, no worries my friend!
A lucky chinese man is driving your F430 right now anyway, so you might as well order a common Porsche, at least you'll get dlivered on time and you'll be able to drive it rather than wait for it!
    Just kidding my e-friend.

Ferrari has seen the error of the strategy and the 430 is coming very soon to the US...a grand total of 800 coupes and 700 Spiders. That is it. Yep they are flooding the market.

Regarding the sedan, RC you are not the only one who has "sources". Take it to the bank; the sedan will be introduced this year likely in September.

Fanch, Ferrari miscalculated the strength of the Asian market. There are 430's sitting in showroom floors in certain Asian countries.

Re: According to one market forecaster, Porsche will produce

Not that I'm on nberry' side but is it that far off that Porsche could introduce the 4th model line (or is it the 5th, considering the Cayman?) this fall? I believe I heard/read WW saying that they are going to come out with a big surprise this fall? What could that be if not the 4th model?

Re: According to one market forecaster, Porsche will produce

Wiedeking spoke 1-2months ago about a sensational new model for Porsche, that nobody was expecting.....I guess that a IAA 2005 will debut the 4 doors Porsche to enter in the market of MB S, Maserati quattroporto and so on....

But everbody expects a sports sedan from Porsche. We mentioned it over one year ago for the first time and a lot of car magazines even showed photoshop jobs of a possible sports sedan. The IAA 2005 will offer some news, right but you guys expect the wrong ones.

Now THATS the surprise. The sports sedan would definetely not be a surprise.

Re: According to one market forecaster, Porsche will produce

I rememeber that quote and I believe he was referring to the Cayman. Porsche is marketing it separately from the Boxster, and I think you will see what they mean when you actually see and drive it.

The Cayman is a Boxster hardtop. Not exciting news to anyone including Porsche.

Well it's exciting to me, but do agree its just a fixed roof boxster. Porsche is trying to market it differently so they can get more $$$$ from it.....no doubt about it.

Is it? Is there a Box with the 295 hp motor?

But that's still all it is.....a Box with 15 extra HP.....it's built on the Boxster frame/chassis, and has the Boxster interior.....all it has is a hard roof. Since Porsche usually charges a premium of $5K-$10K for a drop top
over a coupe that should make the Cayman cost somewhere around the Boxster S.....not $5K-$10K more. Unless they really pack on the options (which I don't care for anyway) I'm not falling for it. It's just a hard top Box with a few overpriced ponies added on......whether it looks the same or not.

Re: According to one market forecaster, Porsche will produce

How the hell are all the crappy dealers here in the U.S going to be able to fix all these models? They can't keep up with the problems they have now.

I have to agree with NBerry for once and say that Porsche is not what it used to be and not very exclusive anymore! This Cayman thing is a joke as is alot of other things Porsche does to rip people off....$125 floor mats??????????????????????????????????

I love my 997 but have seen the light after watching my friend get screwed by Porsche at an arbitration hearing!

Re: According to one market forecaster, Porsche will produce

    Exclusivity is something relative:

Yes, Porsche is still an exclusive car producer. Last fiscal year (03/04) they produced 81,531 units while world passenger car market is close to 50.0 million units. This is a market share of 0.16% so it is difficult to call it mass maker. For sure it is more than Ferrari (approx 4,000 units), Maserati (10,000 units) or Aston Martin (approx 3,000 units).

For example, BMW is making over 1.0 million cars (BMW Brand) and Mercedes is manufacturing slightly more Mercedes brand cars.

For NBerry's info, Porsche isn't making zillion of 911s, at the all time high (2001-2002), they made 32,337 units.

May be if you bump into too many Porsches, you should stop living in a very wealthy ghetto and consider moving into a poor neighbourhood where obviously Porsches are more exclusive !!!

Also what makes you believe that you see too many Porsches in the street, it's because they are reliable with over 85% of all Porsche produced since day one (Gmund days) still on the road (the highest level of the entire industry); and are driven with an average yearly mileage triple to quadruple to those realized by Ferraris.

This being said I'm always happy to see a Porsche on the road, it's always a pleasure to see something nice like a cute girl.

You are comparing apples to oranges. Do you really mean to comapre a Porsche to a Ford, chevy or Honda? You need to compare by price markets.

In Porsches' price market it is without a doubt a mass producer of cars. Other manufacturers in the same market distinguish their cars from Porsche using exclusivity as an attribute. Additionally, it is being reported that Porsche has reduced production on the 997 because of the sensitivity to over production claims.

Finally, people who buy Porsche usually live in upper end areas. Thus, as they drive their beloved Porsche they cannot help but to see several Porsche's crowding their roads and highways. Your right, a Porsche in a slum neighborhood would be exclusive but also more than likely a stolen car.

Maybe because that's about the only thing left for them?:)

Re: According to one market forecaster, Porsche will produce

PORSCHE AG will introduce new 4door GT Coupe called Panamera in September this year. At the same time VW will introduce "budget version of Panamera" in a form of new VW GT Coupe...

    PORSCHE Panamera 4door GT Coupe

Re: According to one market forecaster, Porsche will produce

You're right in that price bracket Porsche is a significant producer even if they are not by themselves...

About scaling down the 997 production, I don't see any reason why they would do so. The 997 is only available for the time being in narrow bodies and with 2WD, so we have to wait for the 4WD (narrow and wide) and turbo versions to come.

I think right now, they are producing as much as they can as demand is strong and they must built up some inventories ahead of the Cabriolet launch.

The last 996 to roll-out of the assembly line will be in May.

All in all, I suspect for this fiscal year, overall 911 sales (996+997) will be more or less in line with last year. On the other hand, next fiscal year, we should have a sharp increase of 911 sales because of the cabriolet and other versions to come baring in mind that some Cayman sales will be taken away from the 911 entry level.
