A friend of mine is considering an SL500 or SL55 (neew or used). He knows little about the car as far as maintenance, bugs, etc. I offered to ask here. Could SL owners briefly relate their experiences and enumerate issues if any? Thanks.
Would advise to get new '05 SL55 if poss. Have had/heard of numerous problem-free 55s, but have heard of a notable lemon rate for many software-intensive Mercs/BMWs...but Merc contacts/my personal expce/expce of pals is that Merc has steadily debugged SLs over past 2-3 yrs. Most of issues had been software bugs....never really heard of mechanical issues. Obviously, huge difference btwn 55 vs 500 in driving expce. Having also test-driven 600, would say 55/65 are only acceptable choices for those who favor sharper steering/chassis/torque/brakes.

Free mtce is a fairly trivial marketing gimmick for $100K+ cars like SL's.....wasn't the only "free" mtce provided essentially a $500ish oil change? Just view it as MB sliding in a $500 price increase....rounding error....

yep, basically the only free things were the oil changes, and some other minor services, that added up to less than $3000 for the life of the car's waranty, after which, maintinence is up to the owner.
