Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

    SciFrog:

You conveniently forgot the California/Portofino... It can do anything a 911 can do but on top of it it looks good and is fun to drive, it has a good size trunk and is coupe/convertible... Plus it has somewhat better resale value. The California is the car we use the most in the summer. We can’t seem to be able to get rid of it and replace whereas I would not even think of buying at 911 TT convertible because they don't look that good, they are somewhat common mixed in all the 911, they have the same interior as a $60k Boxster and more importantly once optioned properly are vastly overpriced. Plus they don’t sound that good (tone and way too quiet). A convertible GT3 with rear seats and no wing would solve a lot of the issues.

The Ferrari even has the same flaw as the 911: eventually the rear seats are too small.

I didn't forget them. They are of the wrong category.

California/Portofino is not a sports car in the traditional sense, it is more of a GT car. Like a Aston Martin DB11.

Hence I don't even consider the Vantage V12 I have as a sports car, it is a GT car to me.

x2, California/Portofino is not comparable to a 911 in sportscar terms, don't see many cross shopping between the two, they are indeed more GT'ish like a Jag, Maserati or Aston but in Ferrari flavor, and of the three I'd go Aston personally..

Portofino not a sports car? News to me. I bet it performs better than most 911s even.

    What's next, an 812 isn't a sports car, it's a GT car?

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

They should do a 928 and a Cabrio. Would it be so expensive to develop? They can use everything from Panamera

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

RT likes to define things such that nothing directly competes with a 911 so that it can't lose a comparison.

Even when you find the closest competitor possible, people say "oh but that doesn't have seats for adult children or my arbitrarily large bag that I'm never carrying."

812, and the F12 before that, had always been a GT car.

They eat up highway miles like it's nothing. Quite fast on a track too but they don't last. My F12 didn't last a whole day at the track.

The Speciale, the regular 458, the 488, are sports cars.

All the McLaren's are sports cars.

Huracan is a sports car. Aventador, perhaps, it's not quite GT car as it doesn't have the room, it's not quite a sports car as it is not quite nimble.

    A Alfa 4C is a sports car.

BMW Z4 is a sports car, M3/M4 isn't, one is a sports salon and the other a sporty coupe, but borderline a sports car.

Defining characteristics of a sports car is that it doesn't have to be very powerful, but it will need to be nimble and can change direction quickly, be it side by side or forward and backward. It also doesn't have a lot of space outside of a couple people.

My Cayenne does better lap times around my track than a Cayman, doesn't mean the Cayenne is a sports car, the Cayman however is.

Portofino being the faster car over a 911 doesn't means it's a sports car.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

I don't see a Portofino as a sport car...more a fast luxury GT on the same way as the Aston's.

that is the Ferrari badge which is giving its class. put another badge on it and sales will tank...angry

for F12 and 812, they follow the same principle but on the category above in term of image, cachet and perf. super expensive and fast luxury GT indecision

Just do a google image search for "sports car" if you want to know what kind of cars the world consider to be sports cars.

You guys are way too big of car nerds, arguing over the most minute, irrelevant criteria that most of the world would never even care about.

Call a 911 a sports car if you want, but I'd bet money that the average 911 see the exact same usage as the average Portofino -- some dude in his mid 50s just daily driving it, doing nothing exceptional. If

The Portofino isn't even that heavy. Probably similar to RC's R8 :x

few of 24 variants of the 911 will be classified as sport cars to my eyes.

    GT model and Turbo's

everything underneath GTS is more GT oriented.

Same here. Only the GTx 911 are sports car to me, which is why the Portofino and the regular 911 fit EXACTLY in the same category, the GT cars... and not for nothing for but every generation the 911 becomes more GT and less sport, hence the increased demand in the GT3/GT4.

Sorry Carlos but if you think the regular convertible 911 are more sporty than the California, you are wrong. And on top of it everything is more dramatic in the Ferrari. No cross shopping a Portofino and a convertible 911? There are the most direct competitor I can think of...

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

No cross shopping merely because the Ferrari costs 2x as much.

You can find some really nice red ones for cheaper with very low miles, and since they depreciate less, true cost to own is not that different. And sorry but value wise, the Ferrari is way better for what you get, if anything just by the cheap 911 interior.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

I would not get a California/Portofino instead of my GTS.

I think no rival car is preferable to any comparable 911.

The rest of the Porsche range is a different story. Many worthy substitutes, especially for the non-sportscars.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

Aaaaaaaaand you've fallen into my trap: RT members are not normal buyers. For example, you have small children that need back seats, but the average 911 buyer's kids are probably 18+ and don't ride in the back seat anymore.

AWD offers little real world advantages anymore in this segment. TC/ESP is more than capable of making up for it.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

For mountain areas AWD is a must.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

Why? I've never heard of people having problems driving Ferraris in the mountains in the Spring, Summer, or Fall....

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

Even if the weather is not too bad road conditions can be dicy. Personally if the weather if iffy, even just rain, I take a SUV anyway because a convertible sport car (or GT whatever you want to call it) won't be much fun anyway.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive Series (2017)

Fwiw, when I owned Ferrari’s I wouldn’t consider for one second taking it out to a track. With Porsche’s, given the opportunity I would track the car.kiss

I haven’t track my GT cars because the closest track is over 21/2 hours away in traffic. Also since Ben’s accident all insurance companies exclude coverage for accidents occurring on a track regardless if the event is drivers education.

I called one of the specialty companies and they wanted $1000 for one day of track work  with a $15,000 deductible and maximum limit of $125,000.

No longer makes sense to track my cars.surprise

In the real world nothing beats a 911. It is different to size up performance in airfields and dedicated race tracks and different to drive fast on real roads with a variety of tarmac ,imperfections, bumps, blind crests, tricky weather etc.

Why are Porsche so good on the NBR? Because the track resembles a real road course.

Besides, visibility is excellent in a 911 compared to the raked windscreens of the "supercars" and its space helps the driving environment compared to the claustrophobic cabins of others.

All 911s are driven whereas the rest are generally static. Has anyone seen a 5 year old Ferrari with 100.000 km on the clock? I doubt it.

The rival brands are very nice to own as trophies, they have dramatic shapes but they are only good for limited driving under ideal conditions. The 911 is in a class of its own. 1.000.000 buyers over the last 55 years cannot be wrong.

That's because people who own Ferraris are much wealthier and therefor have more cars and commute much less.
