    Time for a change

Due to an addition to the family, I will shortly need to replace tbe 997 with a car that has backseats, a usable boot and rear doors.

I am somewhat at a loss to think of a car that I would like to be driving instead. Can anyone suggest a suitable alternative. It would be my main car until the Panamera arrives in 2009.

    Thanks,

    Colin

    Re: Time for a change

Audi RS4? Mitsubishi EVO IX? BMW M5?

    Re: Time for a change

    Porsche Cayenne S , Turbo , or Turbo S

    Re: Time for a change

Has to be the RS4 or if you can wait the new M3 ?

    Re: Time for a change

No, dont say its time for the 4 door Beamer...;-)

Ok, so the Porsche SUV is a good viable choice!!
    Goodluck

    Re: Time for a change

Yeah, RS4, M5 or even the Cayenne. There you go your choice is made.

    Re: Time for a change

    RS4!

    Re: Time for a change

I hate to say it but maybe forget the hot car thing for a while and just get a SUV like a Honda Pilot, or Toyota Highlander.

Why? Because with kid and all the required gear (stroller, playpen, hygiene stuff) the parents always appear tired and in a hurry. Looking for a good parking place will be the one that's closest, not the one that's dingless. Also "bigger is safer" in the event of a collision.

Sorry..., but when I leave my Porsche home and drive my SUV I MUST admit I sometimes enjoy the no-need-to-worry approach AND (though it's just a guess) I always get where I'm going locally like within two minutes compared to if I had been driving the Porsche (not sure about long trips).

    Re: Time for a change

Of course the choice is up to you but SUV's don't have that good a safety record - mainly due to their higher COG and reduced attention to diverting stress proportionately around the chassis. Later P-cars have a pretty awesome record of survivability in high speed impacts because of this.

I guess it may be the case that you would come better off if a semi tries to drive over you but I would hope that is a pretty rare occurence?

Best thing is to try to avoid a prang in 1st instance, of course - you never know what will happen if you get into trouble (unless you're in an F1 or Champ Car CF tub).

Or am I stating the obvious? (Don't answer that question!).

    Re: Time for a change

I have a Range Rover as well as my 997S but if I was in your position and had to just stick with one I'd be quite happy with the RR.

If I was you I'd go for the new Range Rover either the big one or the Sport with the new TDV8 engine. The Sport is a lot more sensible if you spend a lot of time in town, but I have to say that the Range Rover Vogue is a wonderful place to spend time. I can drive the length of the country (admittedly not that far for you Yanks) and get out feeling like I just set off.

As MMD says there is something about driving an SUV which makes you take life a little slower. If you've got little ones on board there's no point charging about in an M5 or RS4.

    Just my worthless opinion.

    Re: Time for a change

    ML63

    Re: Time for a change

Never seen the point in buying an off-roader which can't do the thing it was supposedly made for.

Believe me even the Cayenne isn't up to a RR and that ML63 is a joke. Phenomenal engine thought but what a waste to buy it in that body. If you want an AMG 63 and need space you're way better off with an E63 AMG Estate. Actually I noticed today that Jeremy Clarkson actually rated the E63 ahead of the M5 as a real world buy.

If you like the ML go for a 320 CDI its just as fast in the real world and will save you 40%.

    Re: Time for a change

If one car, I would just go for the E63. Don't forget to order the auto trunk closer.

    Re: Time for a change

Why not keep it as a weekend toy and buy an inexpensive second vehicle to lug the kids and stuff around in? If you consider the money your going to lose in trading, just spend that on something else and keep the P.....

That is a great point. You could buy a used SUV and keep the P-car.

    Re: Time for a change

keep your porsche and buy the wife a fiat panda.

    Re: Time for a change

lolz, good idea ( landgenoot )

    Re: Time for a change

    Everyone, Thanks for your comments.

I have tried the Cayenne (in all it's guises) although it is very impressive, I was disappointed by the harsh ride.

I'm thinking about a 1 year old C55 or E55. Test driving this weekend.

    Cheers,

    Colin

    Re: Time for a change

E55 is a good choice. RS4 is too small. Get the S6 instead if you like Audi. I put my daughter in the back of my 997 for about a year. That got old. I bought a 4 Dr Tacoma for utility and kept the Porsche. I know several people that sold their Porsches when they had children and years later regretted it. Keep the Porsche if at all possible.

    Re: Time for a change

Tried the E55 today. V Fast. Noticeably quicker in a straight line than the 997, but somewhat dull. It felt like a luxury car with a hugely powerful engine, which I suppose is exactly what it is.

QuickSix, I hear what you are saying, but I'm certain if I kept the 997, it would spend most of it's time in the garage.

It's only for two years!!! Then the Panamera, which hopefully will look a lot better than the spyphotos.

Again, the same advice from me as some of the other guys, I would keep the 997 and get a reasonably good sized cheap secondhand car if parking is not an issue. You will definitely get a chance to use the 997 and won't feel bad because the amount of money you will loose on the depreciation of the 997 probably exceeds what it will cost to get a reasonable second hand car.

My brother made the decision not to have a 911 (996 at the time) and get two Subaru's A WRX for her and a Liberty / Legacy Turbo for him. She hardly ever drives her car and since the baby is small their going out is a lot more limited than it used to be - he is keen to get behind the wheel of his favourite car no doubt.

Meanwhile, if you want to sell - let me know, my old mans still in the UK and is thinking of getting a 997 too. PM to let me know, happy to give you a buzz to have a chat or send an e-mail.
