Do you think this is intended to replace the GT3 RS (and be used as the new race car homologation) or in addition to the normally aspirated model for 991.2?

Good question, I don't know but since the GT2 RS is in a completely different price class (250k and up), I doubt that it is going to be a GT3 RS replacement.

It's highly likely to be the homologation car for the 2017 GTE RSR, and thus will have a turbo engine. The GT3 will continue to be the homologation car for the R (the real one) and will remain non-turbo...for the time being.

Oh, so Porsche will continue to race the GT3R as normally aspirated?  Any idea how much longer?

Oh if privateers only, I guess my question is whether that class of racing will change rules anytime soon to favor (or require) turbo motors?

Turbo's are here to stay (for a while). I wouldn't be surprised if if the GT3R eventually became turbo in 2/3 years time.

Re: 991 GT2 RS (2017) - Rumors, speculations and gossip Thread Closed

I would expect all motorsport to go turbo. Aren't they just more efficient in just about every way?

Re: 991 GT2 RS (2017) - Rumors, speculations and gossip Thread Closed

Yes. It's just a question of time.

So, would you be very surprised to see NA motors in the 992 GT3 road cars then, if this is the trend?

Re: 991 GT2 RS (2017) - Rumors, speculations and gossip Thread Closed

It all depends if the GT3 continues to be used as the homologation car. If my theory is correct (that the GT3 continues to be used as the homologation car for the GT3R) then it will eventually go turbo. Also Note: The timing of this also depends on the evolution of the GT3 rules (especially BoP).

There are quite a few options that Porsche can take. It all depends (as usual) on the rules evolution and which option makes for the best business case.

Example: Porsche could opt to use the GT2 as a homologation car for both the GT3R and GTE cars and then keep the GT3 as non-turbo model, or it could use the GT2 as the homologation car for GTE and the GT3 for the GT3R.

I think at the moment, the new GT3R still has quite a long life span still ahead. It is very quick (with better aero, new engine and increased wheel base). It is suffering from unfavorable BoP. It is hoped that the BoP will be corrected for the 24h Nurburgring  in May. Watch out for that to see the competiveness of the car.

Hi Spyderidol, as usual, I agree with your analysis 100%!kiss

Re: 991 GT2 RS (2017) - Rumors, speculations and gossip Thread Closed

    One additional thought:

Turbo-charged engines tend to be substantially more expensive to run and service, so given that the GT3R is targeted at the non-works "privateer" GT3 class, that could be a factor in terms of keeping non-turbos like the NA GT3R alive for the foreseeable future.

Is the GT3R not a notoriously expensive car to run as a privateer? I hear a lot of race teams complaining they can't run the GT3R for privateers exactly because it is too expensive, as opposed to R8 LMS, SLS GT3, ...

True, but a turbo-charged engine would exacerbate the problem...

Re: 991 GT2 RS (2017) - Rumors, speculations and gossip Thread Closed

I have never seen or heard of a Porsche that is "cheap" to run.Smiley I don't have the numbers, but I cant imagine that it is that far off the R8 or the SLS.

BTW - There are already quite a few (new) R's racing in various series.

The 'issue' is with the engine which needs revision every x-hours, an issue that R8/SLS/... have not due to their production engines they're running in the race cars. At least that's what I'm told.

Info from my P Source: car will be limited (more limited then the R in terms of number of units) In Austria the car will cost nearly 400k with options. Thats 675 LT territory.

the price in austria which you quote is consistent with 260K german price, taking into account austrian gas guzzler taxes.

there was also a proposal to FIA about a RSR with mid-rear engine

It’s understood Porsche has proposed the mid-rear engine concept to the FIA, which would require technical waivers as the layout would differ from that of the road car.

“You always have to discuss your concept with the FIA and get the feedback from them to see if it fits,” Walliser said. “New ideas and innovative ideas and get feedback if it can be homologated or not. This is the process.”

I don't think in the immediate future. I seem to recall reading that Porsche had taken the decision to stick with the 911for GT classes.

Again, right now, there is no limitation planned but this can change (see 911R). I rather think that the limitation will be the price tag because for around 300k EUR (with options), this won't be a car for the typical GT3 RS customer.

I don't know about Austria but the GT2 RS will not be in 675LT price territory as far as I heard.

As far as I heard, the Speedster may be the last 991 model with a very strict limitation in production numbers. If it comes (still not clear, at least this is what I heard a couple of months ago...this may be old news already).

I am not aware of hybrid tech (yet) but I heard that parts of the engine may be the basis for the next generation Turbo engine. There isn't much information yet available, this project is pretty secret so far...

they only have about 16 months time until the presentation, so the main planning and engineering should alresdy be in a. rather solid state
