Alex, your reviews are excellent, thank you. Much better than what we read in magazines.
I won't drive a 991 until January but you almost put me in the driver's seat.
Just a minor correction, if I may: The wheels on your test 991 are the 20" Carrera Classic not the Sport Design.

OMG excellent review and fantastic scenic photos. I love the 997.1 comparison pics. It really makes it look very dated, that's not a bad thing, just shows the new 911 is fully new and very modern in all aspects. Great review!
indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine.. I happen to like both :)

Well - this comparison is a bit like apple and beans..or however its called.
1) youre comparing a 997.1 to a 991..its a nice review..but you forget tha the 997.2 was the latest 997 model..obviously you feel the power difference..interesting would have been a comparision 997 GTS and 991..
2) This car is a "weapon"..???..what is a GT2 or a GT2RS..or a Mclaren then?
Your pictures are however superb...thats what I like most in your review..:)..they are so good that they could be used for a Porsche Calendar...congratulations :)

1) I don't think he forgets the 997.2 is the latest 997. Are you familiar with the 997.1? Then its a great comparison, because it gives you something you can relate to. And there isn't just only one good comparison. There will be comparisons with many models as more and more users publish their impressions.
2) you ever heard of a figure of speech? Unbelievable....

Sorry, but I disagree with your - kind of rude - comment.
And I'm not really sure that you know what you're talking about. There's not so much difference between a 997.1 and a 997.2 that you cannot compare the first one with a 991 carrera S.
As for a GT2, a GT2RS or even a GT3, these are different animals.

Budster:
I'm not going to comment on the tone, but a comparison with the 997.2 GTS would be interesting as it has the same power output, which takes power - which can be overly seductive - out of the equation and provides for a comparison of the new car as a platform.
I'm going to do this, just give me more time (coming Wednesday, I have to work at night, so I can actually finish my driving report).
Thanks a lot, Alex...great photos and great review, we really appreciate your work.
As to the "tone" of GTlover...well...he needs to adapt.

Wonderbar:
Thank you Alex! I am struck by how similar these cars look. Even to a Porsche enthusiast, telling the difference in moving traffic will be tricky. Rear lights will be the obvious tip-off...
They look very similar from the front. Had my first on the road encounter with a 991. Didn't realize it was a 991, only the different front leds made me check my rearview mirror and then (when seeing the taillights) I realized it was a 991.

I noticed my first 991 because there were 10 completely identical ones in a row heading straight for me at Cape Point..! That doesn't happen unless it's a global dealer launch, which doesn't happen every day in Africa!

@ Carlos(porsche guru ), Amazon, RC, J.Seven, Gnil, Atz, Reginos, 993 targa, MKSGR, Grant, spyderol, emmanuel and everyone !! Thanks for the nice comments !!! Including gt lover !!
@Gt lover, if I had in the garage a carrera GTS be sure you would have seen it in the photos ...I still say the 991S is a weapon, more than a weapon !! Cammon, who can own or even drive a GT2RS ?? The 991S is the weapon right now for any porsche/car nut !!
Today at work, was thinking how great the 991 is. The 997 ( I am sorry to say this ) it looks old, but in a good way !. I think the 991 is going to be one of the best 911 variants of all time, along with the 993. It is already a very special 911 with a lot of character and without loosing luxury and sportiness.
Next week we are ordering one, and at the same time selling back the 997 to the dealer.
I hope we can see soon real pics of the sport design kit.

Do you already know the configuration you're gonna order ?
Dec 9, 2011 3:53:42 PM
Amazon, thanks !!
We have some idea, we want to go very simple in options.
Colours will be either black or white ( white is probably having now more chances, but having again another white 911 is making us think and go black).
Options would only be :
PDK. PSE. Carrera classic wheels. Sportdesign steering wheel...... Very simple. We dont need PCM, sunroof, BOSE..as this is a car just for weekends.
May be the sport design kit can be a choice if we see a real photo (apart from the frankfurt motorshow we saw weeks ago in silver colour). Thats it. And it also depends finally in what % discount we get this time.
interior will be beige or black, and no full leather package option because of the € .
Another option we where thinking is the 991 cabriolet (non S version), but we will see next week

I love your enthusiasm, Alex! Thanks for the pics and impressions, and good luck on your new car-to-be. Such fun to be making a change, and looking forward to the new car's arrival. For a Porsche nut (which you, I and other Rennteamers are), there is no greater thrill than waiting for and getting a new car! Congratulations!

Hi Alex, dear all,
If my "tone" was not correct then I hereby apoligise for it - I was in rush and thats why I wrote a bit quicker - but it cannot be an excuse for a wrong tone..so mea culpa
Nonetheless, I still believe such an comparison is a bit unfair..comparing a 997.1 to a 991S. As I said before, to be fair, one would have to take the latest 997 available..and that every 997 is not able to drive correctly on a straight line is according to me wrong also. Yes, 997.1 including Gt3 are (a bit) unstable..I have no problem admitting that..but the 997.2 GT3 is already way better..at 240 it drives like a rolls royce...except of course the engine noise. The GT2RS at 240 drives even better as its aerodynamics is better - even better than the 991(although I havent driven the 991 I bet you the downforce is way higher in the GT models than in a 991 -just look at the Sport Auto tests to confirm) - it simply has much more downforce. Again, some criticism mentioned to the 997 is certainly true..but believe me there are huge differences between 997s - accordingt to the one drive. The only 997 I havnt driven is the GT3 4.0L.
Regarding the fact the 997 looks "old" - partially true - it looked already "old" when it came out..but the big plus of it is that it is a very clean shape..nothing pushing, nothing trying to excite by all means (in comparison to the 991)..its like a 993...a classical design. Look at the 996, also a nice Porsche...but 10 years later (now) -nobody wants to have such a design anymore.
There are few other things I dont like about 991..copy and paste from panamera intererior, oversized back etc...
Weapon? OK..if you say its a weapon..for me a weapon is this here (a weapon with less then 450HP is not to be considered as weapon..at least according to me)..
take care,

PCM is standard I think
Reginos, may be you are right. By saying PCM I mean the navigation system. In the targa and our ex 997.1 turbo, we NEVER used it. Heck! Yesterday we got lost with both cars, and still we didnt used the navigation.

Alex thank you so much for the review and the photos.
Very well written indeed.
One small question - Has the longer wheelbase increased the turning radius? I love how manouverable the 997 is.. has that changed at all?
Contrary to other opinions, I think the 997 does not look old or out dated at all compared to the 991 (except for the taillights, maybe).. Funnily enough I saw a 996 in traffic today. It looked great as well. Porsche is doing a wonderful job, seeing how nicely their models age!
Keep it coming!
