    991S 3 days test diary

Hello guys, got the chance today to drive the 991 for about two hours, and so far so good !!Smiley

Just some brief notes, before I write an extensive review tomorrow or Friday.

    1) THE ENGINE SOUND. I don't know how Porsche has done it, but the engine sound from the inside is just EPIC. I would say inside and outside, it sounds very raw at low revvs, and like a rocket when going for it. I also have to say, that the sound has changed, its a much more robotic sound, different from the 996 and 997, but still is amazing !!!. This car was NOT equipped with PSE, so with PSE must be a pain in the a$$ for the neighbours !!. I am completely sold. Even at some revv ranges, the car sounds a LOT inside the cabin.

2)Start / Stop is great, its like starting a motorcross bike ready for a race. Also tried the ¨ coasting ¨ option for the PDK, its GREAT !!!.

    3) PDK IS MUCH MUCH BETTER than in the 997.2, much more quick, and precise. It feels as if the gearbox performs also a great heal and toe effect when downshifting. When reducing from second to first, it never makes a hard noise as I  experienced in the 997.2 pdk.

    4) Electric roof is nice, but I would not go for it. So far there where no strange wind noises. But its expensive, and it should open far more, but therefore it would be a targa.

    5) Sport Chrono Plus, definately has lost that KILLER character the 997.2 has, gearbox will never reduce automatically to the shortest gear possible (the 997.2 in this area, I remember it went absolutely crazy), but as soon as you go for it, oh boy, the sound, and the sport plus feeling when changing gears is GREAT !.

    6) Feels much more refined, you can completely go nearly flat out at entering curves, but at the same time it makes you feel its like a more GT car, like I say it makes you feel that....But its not, its a pure weapon on the road. Its so damn easy to drive, that hardly any car in the road will follow you.

    7) I have managed to see in the PCM fuel consumption a GREAT 9.2L/100kms. After that I really stopped, and started to enjoy the car and went up to 14.6L/100kms. Right now its in 13.5L/100kms.

    8) Every single button in the dashboard, doors, etc, has no flaws at all, and it does feel and look MUCH BETTER than in the 997 interior. Actually I opened our 997.1 targa 4S, and interior is already from another decade.

What I dont like so far :

1)Basic steering wheel should not be available and the sport steering wheel option with F1 paddle should come at no cost.

2)Electric sun roof, also it is not very quick to open.

3)Engine bay is such a step backwards. i always opened the engine bay after a drive to see "something" but now....only two vents.

My quick conclusion of today?. Its a weapon. Above 5,500rpm it has a second push that reminded me to the 997.1 turbo we had.Right now our 997.1 Targa 4S tiptronic S is a school bus ! (I am joking, but you get the point)

Tomorrow me and my father will do a great scenic drive with both cars. get ready for lots of pics.

Is it necessary to spend a serious amount of money having already a 997.1 or 997.2 for a 991 ?? Yes it is, but with the actual economical situation it is definately NOT. With that economical difference you can easily buy a brand new Golf GTI DSG full of options.

Are we getting one ?? Yes. But those who decided to keep their 997's are still having one of the best sportscar of all time.

    Good night for now !!Smiley

    Thanks for the review!

Very interesting that you don't mention the steering system. As with Gnil's report, it would seem that the electric steering is "unremarkable", in a positive way.

Re: My 991S test review of 3 days journal

For those who have driven the 991, how do you like the new seats?  Big difference from 997?  How about the optional Sport seats with deeper bolsters?

    Thanks!

Great review, can't wait to see more pics and you impression after the longer 3 day experience. IMO these reviews form 997 owners and in the real world, driving in a real way are what matter to the 991. The 911 has always been a sports car that can fit into your daily life and conquer anything you throw at it, lap times and top speed are not its most important aspects, its the usability and fun you can have with it anytime anywhere.

Re: My 991S test review of 3 days journal

    Thank you very much!

Please comment on the rear seats too.

You make no mention of the new steering system. I presume the car is fitted with summer tyres so perhaps any difference with the previous model is not as noticeable as with the winter tyres tested by our friends in CH

Also some comments on the PASM (normal vs. sport) would be welcome. Is there PDCC too on this car?

BTW what colour (name) is the car?

Thanks ! I would need to try the car again a few times to see if finally I like this or not. As said, the car is much easier to drive fast , so much more neutral and it will require less skills to drive fast. But in the end , i don't know if the efficiency will be for rewarding then the skills it needed before ?  I need to try more .

@ Reginos : I did not try the back seats. Did not want to loose time on that Smiley They ' look' slightly better, but I would not thing there is any main difference. Just good for kids up to 150 cm . ( so , my kids are still ok a few years Smiley )

Great write-up - many thanks SmileySmileySmiley

How did you like the steering?

Re: 991S 3 days test diary

Day 2. Today we went out to several places outside Madrid, including mountain roads, full of bikes, and also some motorway driving. First decided to drive the 997 for some hours and then jump into the 991. There is a clear difference just from the beginning. A difference in everything.

    The steering wheel :

Its FAR better in the 991. Its a robot, neutral, artificial(in the good way), its like a video game, you put it where you want. Inmediately you can feel the difference, in the 997 the steering wheel feeling is much more HARDER (yes), and in the 991 you can easily use just two fingers to drive in the city, its much softer. BUT as soon as you put sport or sport plus, it clearly shows the steering wheel gets a lot harder. Basically driving through the mountains today....entering, cornering and exiting curves was just INSANE, it STICKS to the road, you can drive so quick through the corners that in some moments I was afraid seeing a police car in the rear mirror. The 997 could not follow up.

    Engine:

Its very raw at low revvs, just when the engine starts you easily notice. Also with PDK, when parking the car or starting in first gear, you play with some little blips in the accelerator and sound clearly goes deep and high volume, really nice !!. We also went side by side, and the 991 seems like a machine gun while the 997 goes from from less to more, but not in the level of the 991. From about 5.800rpm the engine pulls A LOT, like if there was another engine ready to use it. The sound ?, well, what can I say, its just makes you floor it to listen to that sound inside and outside, clearly the sound is more artificial, but it is amazing. And this 991 is not equipped with PSE. Also tried many times to accelerate and see if there was any type of backfire sound, but seems only PSE can do that. So PSE is a must if you order one, although its quite expensive.

    PDK:

MUCH better than in the 997.2 . Coasting is just amazing, basically if you want to drive in automatic mode, most of the time the engine will be at 800rpm, no matter if you dont want. In auto mode, it will always try to go to seventh gear even at 60kph. Seems the 991 will have a very good fuel consumption.

    Sport Chrono Plus:

I said yesterday that sport chrono plus was not so radical as in the 997.2, well I was clearly in a big mistake, the reason was I was driving in manual. In automatic the PDK always wants the shortest gear. Also brutal gear changes with sport plus on. Clearly it does heal and toe.

    Interior:

This is CLEARLY the biggest difference. Every material used is high quality, driving the 997 the interior makes a lot of noises when driving through corners with hard driving (the 997 only has 18.000kms). In the 991 not a single noise from materials, just engine sound. Love the interior.

    Exterior:

People will just see another 911, specially from the front. People that understand or like cars just a little bit, will clearly see the differences.  Driving today, nearly all people started spotting us, but there was no hype about the 991, probably because they thinked it was a 997, and nothing new. Only a guy in an Audi R8 in the mountain nearly stops the car in the middle of the road to spot the 991. And some mountain bikers stopped to admire both of them but there was no comment about new 911.nothing.

    Electric roof:

It opens very little for the big size it has. I would personally not order it. But there is no wind noise or nothing regarding the electric roof.

    Rear seats:

Coming from a targa 4S(targa's have more space in the rear seats than coupe's) the 991 seems to have more space than in a 997 coupe, but not by a lot, may be the head distance with the roof is slightly more.

The sport design rims are the best choice, they look phenomenal.

The  colour is agata grey. Also very nice, but probably the best colour would be white. Seeing the 997 from different angles and from another car, white colour looks amazing.

Did a total of 384 photos and 4 videos with a Nikon 5100. Very happy with the results, will try in the next hours or hopefully tomorrow and upload the best pohots.

What a great day, and today was holiday !!

The 991 is a HUGE step forward. Words to describe the 991S? Weapon, robotic feeling but at the same time has the 911 identity, oh yes.

Thanks for the update. Looking forward to the picks kiss

BTW, are the sport design rims the ones in your pics...reminds me of a wagon wheel.
