Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

    Hi,

I just read in a Porsche magazine the 987 engine will be upgraded from 2.7 for the Boxster & 3.2 from the Boxster S to (between 2.8 and 3.0) & 3.4 respectively. This is suppose to happen sometime in the middle of this year. Has anyone heard about this?

    Thanks

    Prince

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

That's an interesting rumor. I'm still a little skeptical that it will happen however.

I think that one of the main marketing points of the Cayman is its higher power than the Boxster S. This is one factor used to justify its highter price. It would loose that if the Boxster S got the same 295hp 3.4L engine.

That said, I would love the Boxster S with just a little more power, and its chassis can more than handle it.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

To me there are two ways this could make sense:

1-increase the 987S to 3.4L and increase its price to the same as the CaymanS

    OR

2-increase the Cayman S to a larger displacement (3.6?) and then increase both Boxsters. Obviously one has to wonder where this would stop since that engine is in the 997 now.

Upgrading just the 987S without adjusting its price upsets Porsche's carefully orchestrated price structure. However, there probably would be some cost savings for Porsche by eliminating the 3.2L from their lineup.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

I know there's always something new on the horizon. Buy the best today and tomorrow there's something better...

...I must admit that I'll be pretty bummed to receive my new 987S in May only to learn that if I had a waited a month or two, I could have had more power. I'd love to have this rumor either immediately substantiated or squashed.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

It will come for sure - probably for 2007MY and no doubt with a significant price increase to close the difference between the S and the Cayman S.

They probably need to do it anyway as the normal Cayman will be startign out then, and with 250bhp or more it will be too close to the 987S.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

Same rumour as in German carmag "Autozeitung" - see thread "Boxsters with Cayman engines" (last post Feb 10).
AFAIK up to date no official comment from Porsche obtainable

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

Price increase, again? There was already a big@ss increase in 2006 on the Boxsters!

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

The magazine which wrote the article mentioned that it will be a detuned 3.4 from the Cayman S, and part of the mid-year upgrade of the product range. Porsche did that for the 986, when launched the 2.7 model only 2 years after the 2.5 was introduced into the market.

DETUNED ??? The mag author might ask some Cayman S owners who think the actual 3.4 version IS detuned already to keep distance to the 997
But seriously: Boxster S has 280 HP, Cayman S 295 HP. So logically a detuned 3.4 should have 287.5 HP ? IMO doesn't make sense at all - on the other hand Porsche marketing is kind of mysterious sometimes

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

If Boxster S will be with 3.4l Cayman S engine in near(or far) future-price will go up as well... Probably at Cayman S level. Now, how much sense does it make to have Boxster S and Cayman S with same engine and for the same money?? This leveling will probably kill Cayman S sale...
How about something else-power kit X51 for Cayman S! This 3.4l engine has potential up to 330hp so, something is 320hp area is possible(knowing Porsche it will be for 10000 Euro or more)...

Makes much more sense - remember that Porsche's marketing story for the Cayman S has been to place it between 987 S and 997 (performance and price). I guess even Porsche doesn't have the chutzpa to frustrate Cayman S buyers by offering the 3.4 as standard in the 987 S only a couple of months after Cayman S launch - UNLESS 987 S pricing would be "upgraded" to Cayman S level. And even then the Cayman S marketing story would become unvalid rather quickly.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

Or the whole Porsche range gets a 10-15bhp rise and the easy way for that is to give the Boxster S the "old" Cayman engine and make the new Cayman 310bhp. Seems unlikely just 1 year into the Cayman's life (assuming the MY07 cars get the hike) but the 997 and 987 are probably getting to halfway through their product cycle.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

Who would know if they put a 3.4 in the Boxster S anyway? Would they have to tell?

It makes sense to have a common engine....take Audi for example....how many 1.8T engines did they make with varying output!

Anyone checked their displacement?? Is 15 extra horses going to be that noticeable?

Well, if that's true two big improvements would happen. The Boxster would get a better engine and the Cayman would presumably get the 997 non "S" 3.6 engine and both would get the performance they should have had from the start. Particularly with the similarly priced, much quicker if inferior SLK55AMG and Z4M snapping at Porsche's heels for similar dosh. I would assume at the same time the 997 would also be upgraded to maintain the performance gap so important to paranoid Porsche.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

One question for you-how long is Cayman S on the market? Few months only!! You really think Porsche would change engine in second production year? According to my friend from Germany who works at P. no changes on Boxster or Cayman until MY2008(except entery level Cayman-2.7L-250hp)...

I did say IF it is true....

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

The latest (somehow weird) rumor I heard: Boxster S gets the Cayman S engine starting with MY 2007 (summer 2006).
This doesn't seem to make sense but it came from a pretty reliable source.

The Cayman (non-S) seems to get the Boxster engine with 250 HP instead of 240 HP.

And, like it or not: the Cayman doesn't seem to sell as good as Porsche has hoped for. Of course I can't talk about all markets and all dealers worldwide.
So the question is: why would Porsche put the Cayman S engine into the Boxster S since this engine would be one of arguments to actually buy a Cayman S? Strange.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

It's logical and more profitable to build and stock spare parts for only two engines instead of three for the Boxster/Cayman series.

The Boxster is ageing and has lost some sales excitement, so more power is a good thing to get people excited about them again.

The Cayman got tons of good PR, customers like them, people see different things in them they never saw in the Boxster, like 911 competitor etc..

    Porsches plan worked!

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

Hmm...its very interesting the information from RC's source is similar and consistent with 911 & Porsche World(Feb 06 issue) magazine's source, so it seems very likely, even though it does not make too much sense, porsche will launch a 3.4 Boxster S this year.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

The 987 Boxster tested on Italian mag had yet 250hp (official 240). So they have only to change on brochure the power

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

At this point I'm really torn. Should I...

    1. Forge ahead with my late March Build 2006 Boxster S with delivery expected sometime in early May, or

    2. Pass on the March build and wait for confirmation and specifics on the 2007 upgrades/enhancements?

When does the switch occur at the factory? What build date would incorporate any new MY07 changes? Ultimately, what would I gain by waiting?

Obviously with March approaching quickly, I must decide pretty soon. I'm very conflicted.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

akbox, go for the extra power.you will regret it if you do not and be happier if you do.

I had a 250bhp 986 S followed by the 260bhp version and the difference was quite noticeable. But back to the subject in point...

It still strikes me that the whole range between the 987 and 997S needs an increase to maintain Porsche's carefully contrived model strategy. Bearing in mind the 987 platform and variants are newer, perhaps the 997 and 997S will will get a small increase in MY07 (which would also make the gaop between the GT3 and turbo less of a gulf) and then the Boxsters/Caymans in MY08.

Also, the Boxster/Cayman might share a 3.0l engine at 250/270 bhp respectively?

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

I agree that the entire range needs a HP upgrade. For me, I don't see any problem with Porsche pricing the Boxster and Cayman the same and having the same HP levels (base and S, respectively). They are the same car, after all. It's just weird that the 911 is available in so many configurations. Porsche wants higher profit margins, but they are not coming through on the power. Some people will want a convertible and some people do not. Porsche could up the value proposition with the Cayman by playing it to be a more track oriented/sporty model with possibly some other differentiating performance goodies or perhaps some electronic ECU tuning which really costs them nothing.

I can only think that it would be to give the Bozster S a stronger hand in magazine reviews against the revised Z4 range, to keep it conclusively at the top of the heap.

Yeah the biggest thing that made me order the Boxster S instead of the Cayman S is the open top. Stronger engine is secondary, the difference in power wont make me opt for the Cayman S with a hardtop.

That would be cool if it gets the Cayman engine
And if they would only give the Boxster the Caymans more sexy hips as well, then there would be absolutely no reason to buy a Cayman

when can we get confirmed for having a cayman engine putting into the 987S ?

    thanks.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

Unless you plan to track the car, horsepower today is simply a marketing tool. It's only something you can brag about, and it becomes a "mine is bigger than yours" thing. With maximum speed limits here in the US at 65mph and increasing traffic, there are few places where you can use more than 280hp. I finally took my 987S out for a long highway drive yesterday and nothing was missing in terms of horsepower, handling or braking.

Re: Factory engine upgrade for 987 coming soon?

While I have certainly enjoyed the increase in horsepower in my 987S from my 986S, the overall improvement in the interior and options make it a fabulous car. I concur with longislander1 the lack of 15 HP really does not impact the performance of my 987S. Having test driven the 987S a few times - thanks to a patient sales, I decided it was such a great car that I didn't want to wait for a bigger engine.
