    Article:Scandinavian Handling Day

Just picked up the latest issue of "Bilmagasinet" (The Car Magazine) which is Denmark's leading automobile mag.
They have just had their annual Handling day at Knutstorp raceway in the south of Sweden along with colleagues from other scandinavian magazines, and here is a short recap.

I wont scan the article (at least not yet) cuz the scanner is packed away for moving.

    The cars tested were:
    *Ford GT
    *Porsche 997 Carrera S
    *Ferrari F430
    *Maserati Gran Sport
    *Kleeman SLK K55 S8
    *Corvette C6
    *BMW M5
    *BMW M6
    *Cadillac CTS-V
    *Renault Megane Trophy LE
    *BMW 330i
    *Ford Mustang GT
    *VW Golf GTi
    *Subaru Leagacy 3.0 Spec-B
*Opel Astra GTC Turbo 147kW (Vauxhall in UK)
    *Citroen C4 VTS
    *Ford Fiesta ST
    *Mitsubishi Colt CZT
    *Citroen C2 VTS
    *Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG

This was also the rank they had for fastest lap time.
    Here are the times:
    *Ford GT: 1:12,9
    *Porsche 997 Carrera S: 1:13,4
    *Ferrari F430: 1:13,4
    *Maserati Gran Sport: 1:15,4
    *Kleeman SLK K55 S8: 1:16,3
    *Corvette C6: 1:16,7
    *BMW M5: 1:17,2
    *BMW M6: 1:17,2
    *Cadillac CTS-V: 1:17,7
    *Renault Megane Trophy LE: 1:18,4
    *BMW 330i: 1:18,5
    *Ford Mustang GT: 1:19,7
    *VW Golf GTi: 1:20,6
    *Subaru Leagacy 3.0 Spec-B: 1:20,6
*Opel Astra GTC Turbo 147kW (Vauxhall in UK): 1:22,5
    *Citroen C4 VTS:
    *Ford Fiesta ST
    *Mitsubishi Colt CZT
    *Citroen C2 VTS
    *Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG (wet tarmac)

It's worth noting that the 911 equalled the 430's laptime with 135BHP less.
Also notice the S65 AMG's sucky time - even considering the damp surface.

    Verdict:
    Cars in the final.
(My VERY short recap of the article. Forgive me if details get lost)

9th: Renault Megane Trophy: "More effective than fun"

8th: Ford Fiesta ST: "Most fun in its class (...) good value for money"

7th: BMW 330i: "Perfectly finetuned, reliable, unsurprising, too civilized, lacks raw appeal"

6th: BMW M6: "Balance, power, grip, steering lacks involvement/nerve on the real streets"

5th: Maserati Gransport: "Charismatic imperfection=fun, involving, leaves impression, little imperfections are its strengths and weaknesses (gives the car charisma but makes it less of a great sportscar).

4th: VW Golf GTi: "easy and straightforward, loads of fun, great suspension, steering not sharp enough, too heavy, not nimble enough, would never beat the next three no matter how hard they tried cuz those are built only focusing on riving pleasure and not the practicalities of having a family".

3rd: Porsche 911 Carrera S: "Impressive handling, as fast as F430 with a lot less power, rear engine setup an advantage on this track, better exitspeeds out of corners, minute flaw is understeer, engine responsive and powerful, precise and enjoyable manual 6-shift, not as exotic as GT or F430 but delivers world class drive appeal and excellent everyday-car which makes it even better, very close to beating the GT that costs three times as much (in DK) tells us just how right this car has been built.

2nd: Ford GT: "Violent excess of power, great suspension, bites and tears into the asphalt with a zest that is contageous, fantastic communication between steering wheel and front wheels, nice heavy steering, entertaining, fun and beautiful, GT beats the F430 on the highway and freeway, grips the asphalt and grabs your heart, owning it and driving it for more than just a Handling Day it might very well prove an even better and more fun car than the F430.

1st: Ferrari F430: "Delicate handling, intense in everytning it does, like driving a 490bhp Lotus Elise, precise steering, differential makes power delivery less nervous and erratic than the F360, not as much rear grip as the P911, only car here that seems to be built as a thouroghbread racer, more driver appeal than the other cars.

    Re: Article:Scandinavian Handling Day

Ahh, so the heinously non Eurolicious American Ford GT beats all comers in lap times, LOL.

Excuse please, but your cup holders are showing!

    hahahahahahahahha

On a more serious note, why was a Golf R32 not in the test?
And wich version of vette sususpension??
And gawwwd why is a standard model vette quicker on a track than a M6/M6??

It should be obvious to alllll with even half a brain that the 997S is the best sports car, the best BUILT sports car,
and the best sports car to take on a long trip, and pretty
much COMBINED Bests are a Porsche exclusive that no others can touch or even bother to try. Ferraris are the prettiest,
Vette are the fastes on a track, but when u gotta drive home, the 997 is totally superior with NO real competition.

    Re: Article:Scandinavian Handling Day

Amazing 997S handling! but was it a PASM or -20mm 997S? ...cause if it was a PASM car, I can only imagine the -20mm with its rear LSD with even faster corner exits

    Re: Article:Scandinavian Handling Day

M5 and M6 are really not that good on the track...the 330i is not far behind...

Bogus test! M5 and M6 should not have identical times. The M6 is lighter and has a lower center of gravity.

Also, why was the Corvette such a flop? It was more than 3 sec. slower than the 911. Road and Track and Motor Trend tested both the Corvette and 911(PASM)on the track and the result was the Corvette beating the 911 by a fraction of a sec. both times.

Obviously, the 911 is equipped with -20mm and LSD, but, it shouldn't be able to trounce the Vette that much.

    Also, where was the Gallardo?

Hehehe...I guess we American-NASCAR-cupholder, Joe Sixpack-bashers deserve that

From what I can read it was its sheer raw power via the turbo that gave it such laptimes. It was slower than the F430 at the end of the long straights (199 km/h versus 201 km/h) but had sublime grip.

Notice that the 911 had a top speed of only 187 km/h on the straights and still managed to equal the F430 laptime. Pretty cool IMO.

The Ford Gt is undoubtedly a great car. It looks strange IMO and those stripes leaves no doubt where it was born. I dunno if the designers were afraid people wouldn't understand it was a sportscar, so they added speed stripes JUST to make sure..? I know it's a retro salute to the old GT40...but still - looks like a truck made skidmarks all over it.

But great that a newcomer can stir up the old soup!

The only competition to the 911 is another 911 or a Boxey or Cayman.
The two latter will take over the throne from the 911. Mark my words.
As I understand it, the Cayman already beat the 997S on Nürburgring.

    Indeed a fierce family!

I guess they couldn't include every car on the planet, but I have no clue why they had TWO Beemer M-models there.
According to the article, the two M-models handled more or less similarly, but the M6 was a more dedicated sports-type of car. Sorry, it doesnt account for the congruent laptimes. I dunno.

The 911 has PASM but not -20 mm suspension. It was standard as far as I can tell.
The driver used to be Mika Hakkinen's test driver.

    Re: Article:Scandinavian Handling Day

You asked about the Vette. As far as I can tell it was "standard", meaning no Z51 Performance Package.
Here's what the package contains according to the homepage:
"Includes performance-tuned Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar EMT tires, stabilizer bars, cross-drilled brake rotors, springs and shocks; additional cooling for power steering, engine oil and transmission; special gear ratios for manual transmission and performance axle ratio for automatic transmission."

If the tested car had cupholder or beercooler or perhaps blingbling rims and flames down the side, I'm sure it would have beaten the 911

That was the base 997, with standard suspensions (no PASM or -20mm) and 325HP (the 997S is much faster than the Cayman at the ring)

So it was a PASM 997S in this test! Amazing! things could of gotten embarrasing for "some" of the other cars if it were the -20mm with rear LSD!
I guess HP wasn't much of a factor in this track from what I see in all the lap times, must of been a tight handlilng course

    Re: Article:Scandinavian Handling Day

Ring Knutstorp looks like a nice track.

The stripes on the Ford GT are a racing 50's-60's thing,
most cars in international competition had them. If you grew up with just seeing sponsors names plastered all over the cars, Im sure they look outta place.

Now, when do we get a Swedish F1 GP again?????? Im putting you in charge of getting that accomplished.

Oh, I know about the origin of the stripes...but it looks kinda odd on a streetcar IMO.
Swedish F1 grand prix? No problemo. Just need a billion bucks, a Goodyear contract (to soup things up a bit...) and some heavy duty lobbying. That oughtta do it. Well...and perhaps some meatballs too.
I'll probably throw in an intreague of diplomatic proportions for good measure...
