    997 TT + TTS

Will the 997 TT and the 997 TTS be introduced at the same time, like the 997 and the 997 S ?

Possible...but not very likely. I know that they are developed at the same time and may actually be "ready" at the same time but I'm not sure it would be wise to sell both from the beginning.
The 997 Carrera and Carrera S story is actually a very clever one: they used the "old" 996 M96 engine for the Carrera to save cost and the updated M97 engine for the Carrera S.
I'm still not a friend of this strategy since I think that the Carrera should have had 340 HP and the Carrera S the 381 HP now soon available for the powerkit.
I'm afraid it is always about the money and I don't like it.
As a customer, I'm willing to pay for a certain product. But if I get a product with 355 HP and one year later, a 381 HP version is available (even if it costs additional money), I'm not pleased at all. I understand they want to sell the powerkit but at the same time they p.ss off customers like me who actually "supported" the introduction of the new 997 model by buying one. And this is now the "punishment". At least they could offer a 381 HP powerkit retrofit package for buyers of the first MY for the same money the factory option costs (incl. install).
But such customer friendly decisions never happen...

Well said, RC - and unfotunately so true.

Again totally agree RC and this is one thing that surprises me about Porsche is that how much they take the p**s , sure there here to make money but there appears to be no let up..

I have purchased many diifferent makes of cars and they by far win the " tight as a crabs arse championship " literally.

    throt...

    Re: 997 TT + TTS

I read some place that one porsche exec stated "we will keep making the 3.6 for a bit longer" meaning that IMO, at some point as the cayman grows up, the carrera gets 355 HP 3.8...and thats it. or maybe an S with the 381 HP. either way, the 911 is now a 3.8 as i said in a previous post, Im sure the GT3 will be 3.8 and the turbo as well. Confirmed by RC thank god! but with all the stuff they are puttin in the GT3 now, what seperates it from a carrera S if it has a wet sump engine!

Hi RC. I'm sure this has been covered on the forum before but could you please just explain the differences between the M96 and M97 engines? I keep on reading about them but I don't know the difference. I gather the M96 is the "iffy" engine that is RMS prone... If so, where does the M97 come from. Is that the dry sump one that powers the GT3?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this for me.

Good question. But I'm afraid I haven't the answer you're probably looking for. I studied the official Porsche literature and there isn't much mentioned about the differences between the M96 and M97 engine generation.
From the technical drawings, pictures, both engines look almost the same.
I asked the same question a person from Porsche and he told me that the engine "design" is almost the same but that certain parts have been slightly modded/improved and re-enforced too. Also the RMS issue shouldn't really happen anymore that often compared to the old 996 engine but it can happen due to the engine design. My dealer sold lots of 997 and none had a RMS issue. On the other hand, I saw two new 996 engines lately for installing in customer cars with RMS issue at my dealer .

No, the M97 engine is not the same 964 based dry sump engine used in the 996 GT3, 996 Turbo/S or GT2. But due to the 355 HP power figure and the upcoming 381 HP powerkit, I suppose that the information I got regarding improvements/re-enforcements inside the engine seems to be true. The "old" M96 engine is good for up to reliable 350 HP but more is difficult...

But if this is some sort of consolation for you: some people try to give the impression that the M97 engine is some sort of cheap engine design and not worth the money. This isn't true. The M97 engine is a very nice piece of technology, the "old" 964 based engine is "just" more durable but also much more expensive. Not to forget about the better track capability but I doubt that any "ordinary" track driver would ever experience an oil starvation problem on street tires or with semi-slicks. For all the other racing stuff, the GT3 is the better choice.

    Re: 997 TT + TTS

Thanks for that very complete answer RC
