For those who wants a 2.7L over an S

Just back from a 2 hrs test drive in a 987S.
For those of u who has never seen my post, I hv had a 987 2.7L for a bout 3 months now, loving every moment of it.

Both the test car and mine are similiarly equiped, no PASM, 18", no Spr Chrono. Both have done about 4000 km. So the comparo by far the fairest.

The first 15mins was a TOTAL disappointment. I faild to see a lot of difference in power. YES, a bit mroe low-down torque than my 2.7L, but not to justify the price differnce.

Gearbox.... SUCK!!!! could be cos it s test car for journalists, but its rubbery, imprecise, long throws compared to my 5 spd. It almost feels "loose", if u know what I mean. My 5 spd is a smooth mechanical feel, about 10% shorter throw (yes, u can feel it), and LOTS more precise.

Clutch- I always think my clutch is too light (Honda Civic Light). and jumping from the S back into my car comfirms that. So 1 point to the S.

Now, 30mins later. got onto the freeway. floored it in 2nd.....
WOW! now, thats how it should feel!! adrenaline pumping, 2nd, 3rd, 4th... 140km already. nice.......

Brakes- simply awesome. (no PCCB). I want these brakes!!! they are a world apart from my 2.7. nice feel, stops like nothing I hv tried. Maybe I need to bed in my brakes properly...????!!

Sounds amazing with roof up. a deeper roar than my 2.7L, but not a HUGE improvement tho..... (PSE should fix this)

So, its true that the S feels better the longer u drive it. but is it worth getting a basic spec S compared with my 2.7L with PCM, heated seats etc etc??

    NO!
so there, I would never consider buying an S until maybe they put the 3.4L engine in it. so till they fix up the gearbox.

Summary of pros cons of my 2hrs with the S

    PROS:
    - more torque low down and top-end (not huge diff)
    - feel of clutch
    - awesome brakes. no need for PCCB

    CONS
    - not worth extra dollar- but if u r loaded, why not?
    - GEARBOX travel and feel- really sux
    - Console without PCM looks awefully cheap and jap car-like
    - Power hike from std Boxster does not justify price difference.

So there. If you dont hv to stretch you budget and work extra hours to get an S, then go for it. but get a nicely speced on.

If u r like me, a standard 2,7L with PCM w the lot will make u a happy man. just dont order a S with no options thinking it is the ultimate driver's car. cos it isnt, the 997S fits the crown...

Re: For those who wants a 2.7L over an S

i thought the brakes are the same beside the colours...arent they?

Come on Malmsteen! Get with the programme! Read the brochure, spend more hours on the Porsche web site. I sometimes feel your heart isn't really in it.

Re: For those who wants a 2.7L over an S

    Derder,
I find the brakes on my 987 2.7 are on a par with my old 986 S, so maybe you should get them looked at? One of the known problems with Boxster brakes is that the discs can get slightly corroded unless you dry them properly after washing. My OPC recommended doing a couple of high speed braking manouveres to clear down any corrosion (of course, only where safe to do so).

Hmm. Odd that. Mine's very mechanical and not at all rubbery. 4th was a bit off to start, but that's wearing in nicely now (1400 miles on the clock) Shame it tainted your drive. I didn't get the chance to drive the 5 speed manual - dealer only had a tip at the time. Wonder what everyone else thinks?

Exactly what made me go for the S. I was seriously not sure about whether it was worth it, but after a blast in an S my heart took over - must have been the adrenalin!

I'm sure the 2.7 is no poorer cousin, and glad you love yours. They are both great cars.

Re: For those who wants a 2.7L over an S

I would rather go for a basic "S" than a fully specced 2.7. That's what sportcars are all about... performance. The Boxster needs every bit of performance it can get.

    But that's my opinion

Re: For those who wants a 2.7L over an S

Irony of course is that the new 987 is as quick as the old S in pre facelift form. That was quick enough for everybody. For me the 2.7 was/is plenty. I'll move up as I go but for now I'm happy, and it still sounds absolutley fantastic.

    Cheers

    JZ

Totally agree. Strange comment about the gearbox, it is absolutely perfect on mine.

Re: For those who wants a 2.7L over an S

I guess at the end of the day, we all love our cars. thats the important bit. S or non-S.

as for the gearbox.... it seriously felt like it came from a Korean Hyundi or something.... totally spoilt the whole experience.... I m sure its just the test car.

Thats why I never buy dealer demo cars.

Just got back from a meeting tonite, had a long drive in the rain.
Just glad I got my own car back... with PCM and the slickest g/shift I hv ever driven.

apart from the Honda S2000...... now thats some gear shift folks.

But the rest of the car is crap. I know, I had one.

Ah, but horsepower never tells the whole story. The power delivery is quite different and if you take a look at a dyno sheet, you'll see where the torque differences are between the 986S and the 987.

I find that both the 5-speed and the 6-speed trannys on the 987 are too rubbery and the throws are too long, but I've become accustomed to it. The only thing I dislike about the cars right now is the electronic throttle. Blah.

Re: For those who wants a 2.7L over an S

perforance...yes in handling, brake...but they should put the 3.8L in this car...only NOW this car would be a really satisfying drive...to take advantage of the superb balance of the chassis...they had the nice engine but they had to put it in the wrong car...all marketing if you whant my opinion.

Hmm, waiting for that!! anyway also test drove 3.2 & found gerabox different to 5 speed, shift down to fourth seemed to "grunch", Over here with only about 50k of motorway (so far) in whole country 2.7 is perfect not as much torque as my old Saab Aero or older Viggen but an absolute dream (my dream come true anyway) to drive on twisty quiet roads, gearbox throw is so quick to change up or down. amazing. even with Bridgestones & not even run in yet.

Re: For those who wants a 2.7L over an S

Yeah, I'm sooo harsh! (Sorry Malmsteen! I was just trying to encourage you to hang-out at your dealership more )

Interesting that you found the 4th change crunchy too, pols. I think it does wear in - mine is certainly better, but still improving. The 'S' I test drove way back in 2004 had such a sweet change. I guess you can never be 100% sure what you're gonna get with a dealer demo drive. You ideally should drive some pre-owned cars with some miles on for a fuller picture I guess. Tricky to do when the new model was only just launched. The combination of a slick shift and the engine from the demo car swung me round to the S for sure.

Re: For those who wants a 2.7L over an S

Actually, was being a little bit cynical, you have great patience, anyway the one I tested was a demo / sold!! & the dealer scared the bejasus / s**t out of me on back country mountain road with no gearbox crunch, my turn, I crunched every time being gentle with the car.
