    Steering wheel - best option

I have a standard non-multifunction on order. I currently drive an M3 - which is nice. I would be interested in pros and cons of the options purely in terms of comfort (I have largish hands)!

Re: Steering wheel - best option

Go with the thicker sport wheel, the regular one is way to thin.

Re: Steering wheel - best option

Do you have a part number ?

Re: Steering wheel - best option

agreed regular is worse than a BMW 316 !!

Re: Steering wheel - best option

i feel porsche are let down by the skinny steering wheels they have. when i test drove a 997s the wheel felt like a golf's in comparison to the //M wheel in my BMW. A real let down to an otherwise amazing car.
so in answer to your question Dambox, i reckon the padded sport wheel is best, although i think this costs about Pounds500.

Re: Steering wheel - best option

Is "padded sport wheel" multifunction ? - and is this a recognisable part description to the OPC ?

Re: Steering wheel - best option

Code for it is XPA - its not multifunction. the multifunction smooth finish wheel is code 431. If you go on the porsche UK website you can download the full price list with option numbers.
What colours have you gone for (in and out) on your 997?

Re: Steering wheel - best option

Option XPA- Smaller diameter Padded steering wheel with thumb rest. Full smooth leather including hub 2.2g. No multi-function, thank you. In my opinion the only way to go. Clean, simple and comfortable to hold. The one part of our 997's we always have our hands on. $800 in US$ on "S"

Re: Steering wheel - best option

Option color - midnight blue / stone gray interier.

Re: Steering wheel - best option

Down to personal taste really - I quite like the thinner wheel (I have the multi-function one) because I feel it communicates more than the thicker one. Just my view.

I really don't like the way the non-multifunction or multifunctional wheels look. The triangle shape of the airbag cover looks strange to me. I think the "sports steering wheel" with it's rounded airbag looks a WHOLE LOT BETTER. In terms of comfort the regular "sports steering wheel" is the same imo as the "multi-functional"/ non-multi. But there is a THICKER SPORTS steering wheel covered in smooth leather that I think is the best comfort and looks wise. Especially if you have large hands. Not only is the steering wheel thicker but it has the nicer smooth leather. It may also have leather covering the airbag instead of vinyl but I'm not sure about that yet. 3 years ago I had a new M5. I liked that steering wheel a lot better than the wheel in my 996 Turbo because of the thickness. I always loved the thicker steering wheel that was available in the 996 and that's why I ordered the 997 w/ the thicker wheel sight unseen. Ferrari, Maser, Lambo's all have thicker wheels and it's a great option on a PORSCHE. I think it's pricey but to get the smooth leather w/ out the thicker wheel it cost money anyways. For me I love the way a thicker wheel feels especially when driving hard. In terms of looks nobody will notice except those people like you or me that think it's somewhat important. It's all a matter of personel preference of course but I think it's one of the best options.

Re: Steering wheel - best option

I have an M3 and therefore specced the thicked steering wheel for my 997S due Sept.

What's all this about thumb rests? Anyone hear experience thumb fatigue on steering wheels without this aid?

reason for "thumb rests" (I believe)

The "thumb rests" are good to prevent broken wrists in case you hit a curb really badly (or a worse accident) and the wheel jerks in a microsecond and breaks your wrists. The bumps are meant to make it easier for your hands to be knocked off and not broken.

That said, I hate the things, it's like a kid's toy or other knobby aid for the physically impaired.

Triangle looks funny to me too.

The round one, though strangely new looking, I think will be easier to get used to and keeps the interior styling looking clean. IMHO It's on the BMW and on teh Ford GT and other cars. The triangle has been played already.

The multifunction thing is not worth it IMHO! unless you are going to use BOTH sides. If you don;t use the phone side, it's a waste.

Though definitely convenient, the volume and track change buttons are just TWO functions for the stereo (I believe).

Not THAT big a deal to spend $700 on a trianglular wheel?

Where can I get one? What is the Tequipment code for a Porsche knobby aid

Have you seen the wheel on the new Golf GTi? It feels great, but could be a slightly smaller diameter. Much better feel than my multifunction wheel.

If I was ordering again, I'd get the thicker sports wheel, with the round airbag. The Porsche multifunction wheel is not as usable if you're used to BMW, even an E46, let alone E60 or newer, and I find myself using the buttons on the PCM instead.

Re: Steering wheel - best option

I cpmpletly agree with the above. I like thick steering wheels
