    Tire Pressures

I've read a couple of posts on the forum about tire pressures, and I'm not sure what the best setting to go for is. Carrera S 19 inch wheels....I really don't anticipate carrying much luggage (not sure where you'd put it...a bag of groceries and the trunk's full). I've never seen a car with such a wide variance in tire pressure setting depending on loaded/unloaded

    19 inch wheels, partially loaded
front 33 psi (up to 2 persons without luggage)rear 39 psi
    19 inch wheels, fully loaded
front 36 psi (as of 2 persons with luggage) rear 44 psi

Which setting would give the best handling characteristics... Could someone tell me the advantage/disadvantage between low inflation 'v' high inflation

    Thanks

    Re: Tire Pressures

in summer low inflation is best,

low inflation optimizes, grip but looses a little performance in acceleration

high inflation increases under/oversteer optimizes acceleration but also decreases the cornering grip

in either case one should stick to recomended pressures otherwise the wear of the tyres is greater and shortens their life

    Re: Tire Pressures

Dilinger, I don't agree : low inflation may cause overheating and tires explosions, specially during a hot greek summer... and how faster how heater.
We don't want to lose you so early !

    Re: Tire Pressures

i mean relively low inflation!!! not flat tyre! haha

    Re: Tire Pressures

And how much is "relively low" and "relively high" for you ?

    Re: Tire Pressures

2 -3 lbs maybe but o dont do it often regularly in greece due to high temp, we drop 2 lbs pressure at high summer

    Re: Tire Pressures

I would follow the 36-44 (or 2.5-3) rule scrupulously.

    Re: Tire Pressures

    Zacharie
80% of the time it's just me in the car & if my wife does come along she weighs all of 110 lb's. Given that, would you still use 36-44 rule.....Wouldn't that equate to over inflated tires....33-39 or 36-44 is such a big difference that it must have a huge impact on handling.

    33-39

Why do any different unless you're going to do a lot of autobahn driving at high speed or you're going to track it? Just make sure you check the pressures regularly when the tires are cold, and adjust accordingly.

I agree - I'd use the 33-39 for everyday driving for comfort more than anything, but if you're on a trip or wanting the best handling then use the 36-44. Higher inflation pressures meant less tyre flexing therefore better handling. Certainly makes the car feel more positive.

    Re: 33-39

    Ok
So I tried 36-44 and really didn't like it....I don't mind the harsher ride, but I found the car a little nervous over imperfect roads (spirited driving). I'm sure if the car were more heavily loaded (extra passenger etc) it would quiet down a bit, so I'm going back to 34-40

    Re: 33-39

I keep 36-42, and I check them at least once a week. I have noticed that these lo-pro tires lose air fast and often, while driving the mean streets of New Jersey.

So you're back up and running jb? Glad to hear it. Are you ennjoying it?? I sure hope so - I mean I hope the experience hasn't been entirely ruined.

    Re: 33-39

Actually SB, I have only drove it today as I drove it to the dealer for an inspection. And, as it were part of a script, the Porsche had to stay the night to fix a Service Recall Defect. I have not been driving it over the last few weeks. I asked my dad if he wanted to drive it for a while, and he agreed to change his car with mine. Then, after my father drove the car for a few weeks, I had to take it back for the inspection. Also, I had to take it back since PCNA sucked by not wanting to sport the cost of transfering the car over from me, to him.

    Re: 33-39

Just to clarify any possible confusion, after I sent Peter a sarcastic e-mail about this "dream car" on March 15th, the next day Porsche called to make me another sympathy offer. Porsche offered me $ 10,000 to keep the car for the remaining 24 months of the lease. I at first told them that I wanted my money back or a replacement car instead. Then, after a few weeks of my dad driving my car, I amended my rejected offer to include the $ 10,000, a Porsche paid transfer of the car to my dad, and dealership loaner car privileges at another Porsche dealer (Ray Catena as opposed to Flemington). Porsche rejected my offer later that day.

The reason that I had rejected that offer was strictly legal. Since I had filed for the NJ lemon law buyback program, my rights for future relief could not be reinitiated, if future problems arose. The program is kind of a one shot deal, leaving me with only a Superior Court case (a 2 year wait & $20k in legal fees) for relief. My thoughts on the transfer of the car to my dad were two fold. First, my dad liked driving the car, and secondly, the Lemon Law option would be open to him, if the car still continued to have problems.

These tires are out of control. I am now forced to checking the tires twice a week. I am losing up to 15#'s in various tires, every few days of driving. At first I thought there was an air leak, but when I left the car in the garage for 3 days, the pressure stayed the same. My biggest fear is these tires losing air on one bump, and blowing out on the next.

    Re: Tire Pressures

Maybe these simple rules help a little bit:
    1. stay with Porsche recommended tire pressures for street use, they're not optimized for comfort but for best performance combined with maximum safety.
    2. if you're driving a lot at higher speeds above 250 kph, go for the maximum tire pressure for a fully loaded car and add 0.1 bar to it, so you don't have to run every day to the fuel station to refill it.
    3. for track use, get a second set of wheels with tires.
If you really want to use your street tires on the track, drive a few warming-up rounds and THEN lower the tire pressure by around 0.3 bar (compared to the minimum tire pressure). The reason is simple: during HEAVY track racing, the tires warm up extremely, they build up a lot of heat and the tire pressure raises to the Porsche recommended values.

WARNING: after track racing and letting the tires cool down for some time, ADJUST the tire pressure again (raise it). A lot of track drivers forget it and end up with a blown tire on the Autobahn.

AGAIN: the Porsche recommended tire pressures are the MINIMUM required pressures, DO NOT go below them!!!
Porsche is very "anal" about tire setups and pressures, don't play around with them. Unless you don't like your life.

JB, maybe you should be looking at the calibration of the tire gauge(s) you are using, and not the tires.
If pressure in ONE tire was varying wildly, then it could indicate a problem with air loss from the tire, the valve, or a porous wheel casting. But if several wheels on a new car are suffering this problem, it seems to be quite a coincidence.

    Re: Tire Pressures

I pay attention to tire air pressure too. I found that my gage is not so accurate. One time I compare mine with friend's and difference was more than 5psi. One time I compared with some dealer's and difference was 3psi that dealers been in middle. Our car handles quite differently with 5psi off. What do I do?

Any good way to calibrate tire pressure gage at home? So far, my driving feel is the calibrator.

    Re: Tire Pressures

I have a digital one, and it's important to 'zero' it before you take readings....briefly press on tire valve, and wait for 00.0 to flash. Agree with your comment about 5 psi on the car....that is enough for very different handling characteristics
