    Technical Question re Oil usage

I've now covered 3500 miles and have used about 3 litres of oil, does this seem normal?

I've also noticed a creamy yellow substance on the inside of my Oil filler cap, and partway down the inside of the filler tube, is this a symptom of an problem with the engine?

Re: Technical Question re Oil usage

My 987 S has used 1 litre in 1000 miles, and the handbook states consumption can be up to 1.5 litres per 1000km (625 miles). Don't know what the handbook for the 997 states, but you will find it towards the back of the book in the engine spec section. My dealer was quite specific about only using Mobil 1 (0W-40). Allegedly this is cheaper in Esso filling station shops than Halfords etc.

Re: Technical Question re Oil usage

    7200+ miles, 3 liters of 0W-40.

Sounds normal to me. Especially over the first couple of thousands miles, oil consumption can be up to 1,5 litres/1000 km (not miles!).

Re: Technical Question re Oil usage

I've just spoken to the OPC and they said that it sounds normal. The 997 can use up to 1L per 1,000km at first but should settle down. He said the sludge is a result of condensation of oil & moisture and is also normal.
Thanks guys, it wouild appear that all is ok

This generally happens more on cars which do short runs.

So now you have another reason to take the car out for a nice long run!

Re: Technical Question re Oil usage

Can you believe mmy OPC said not to worry about putting any oil in as it wont need any work til 20000 miles!!! Not right IMO!

Re: Technical Question re Oil usage

My engine just isn't consuming oil at all. I've only added 500ml in 4900 miles!

Re: Technical Question re Oil usage

at 4900 km i ve added 1 lt.

Oil consumsion is subjected to driving style.Revs and of course downshifts.
    Downshift-driving-style consumes much more oil

Re: Technical Question re Oil usage

Yeah - that's what concerns me cause I give it to her hard!

Re: Technical Question re Oil usage

    0.8 lt, 5.000 km

Re: Technical Question re Oil usage

1600 miles and no oil usage in my 997

It should be fine. Both of my Boxsters did the 15k plan and never had any kind of engine problems. Keep them both up to between 60k-70k miles. No drops in performance as well. Both became Porsche certified after I traded them.

Wow! What kind of driving--short, long, highway, city, mix?

I wonder where the oil goes (kind of like the cat wondering where the toilet water goes)? I mean, does it burn and leave trace particles on the cylinder walls or bang into the 8th dimension?

This was a great question for me as I was also starting to worry about the oil usage. Thanks for the answer

Combination of everything. 300 mile runs at a constant 80 - 100mph with aggressive kickdowns - London city driving in Sport mode (up to 6k screams) - and cruising. You name it, she has explored it.
