good news -- i'd appreciate a "pure" mclaren much more than another "mercedes by mclaren" like the SLR.
merc is so paranoid about safety and so in love with their electronic abilities that the outcome would always be some compromise, maybe they now have the chance to make the car gordonmurray-esque

Know what he is up to lately?
Was only able to find a blurb on grandprix.com:
"Murray continued to work for McLaren until early 2005 when he decided to pursue an independent career."
Maybe he was to get away from anything SLR related?

Or anything Mercedes-Benz related? (But then, even DaimlerChrysler stockholders just can't wait to jump ship at the moment.
DC's annual stockholders meeting took place yesterday in Berlin, and only came to an end when a United Nations peacekeeping force intervened! 
I exaggerate only slightly. 
I think I saw that DC's stock price fell by 5.1% today.) It doesn't sound like the birth of the SLR was painless, and I've thought since I first saw that car in the flesh that it can't have been what G. Murray had in mind at the conception.

i know, it was ment in the sense that McL could try to live up to his heritage.
Sure, but what other top-class racing car designer would want to take up the challenge after seeing the way things went last time around?

probably adrian newey
The obvious choice, since he is currently a McLaren "insider".
Don't know if he has any interest in designing road cars though.
Do know that he was disillusioned enough with McLaren-Mercedes a couple of years ago to think of leaving F1 to design racing yachts instead.
