    Cayman Info

I just got back from a 997S test drive and was asking the dealer about the Cayman, he told me quite a bit, as follows:
UK Price for the Cayman S will be Pounds43,000.
Standard spec is quite basic, pretty much the same as the Boxster S.
The front gets circular fogs and a more aggressive front spoiler. The spoiler is apparently very similar to the aerokit.
Rear is quite similar to the boxster - with quite slim butresses on either side of the hatchback / rear window.
Performance is very close to the carrera (non-s) in terms of raw figures / o-60 dash etc. But in terms of handling around a circuit he reckoned lap times will be closer to the 997S - due to the mid-engined layout.
He also hinted at the future of the Cayman / 911 line-up, by saying that within a few years the Cayman is expected to take over from the basic 911 - which will be discontinued. And that in future the "basic" 911 will be the Carrera S.

    Other info (997 related):
Carrera 4S will be out this year, probably after the summer. Its not a full widebody, only expected to be 10mm wider to accomodate the 4wd system. The first true widebody (the 997 turbo) will be out next summer (06) - possibly with some pictures making it to press around the end of the year. It will have 490hp and ONLY come with the double clutch system (PDK).

    Thats's all...

Oh, and the 997s i test drove - amazing.

    Re: Cayman Info

Thanks, usefull info! Will the old 997 S become the non-S and will there be a 380hp new-S?

    Re: Cayman Info

good question zurich - to be honest i don't know. but to be honest, for a "base" model the 997S is an awesome car. The only thing i didn't like was the thin steering wheel (i'm used to BMWs, which have chunky wheels) and the clutch pedal, which had loads of travel - although i would probably just need to get used to it.

    Re: Cayman Info

Round fog lights, rear butresses, agressive aerokit type front intake, base 997 performance, Turbo in summer as MY06 with 490HP and DSG... looks like your dealer reads Rennteam!

But C4S wider to accomodate AWD? I never heard such a thing before, in any car for that matter. Wider to accomodate a wider track, or wider tires, or turbocharging apparatus, etc yes but due to AWD

As to the Cayman subtituting the basic 911, I should clarify just in case that he meant discontinuing the base 997 and leaving the 997S with the Cayman S underneath it, not substituting the 911 range.

Would make sense IMO since the Cayman S and base 997 are in direct competition and by doing that they leave the spot open for the Cayman S. And also make the 997S the "base" 911 now and successfully will have raised the price of the bases 911 10k. By launching a 997 with no performance gain over the 996 and a more expensive S version at the same time, which should have been the base 911 in the first place, they get rid of the 997C2 later and leave the 997S in its place.

    Re: Cayman Info

We are all so anxious for info regarding the future of Porsche, that we will entertain anything that we hear. I am
not saying he is wrong, but I work at the largest dealer
around; and none of this info has been rumoured, on this side of the pond.... Revvv

    Re: Cayman Info

For me the most significant piece of info was the price. At Pounds43k its not as expensive as i expected, and seems like a good buy, especially seeing as the 997 C2 is on its way out.
Was also told that at their dealership the waiting list for the C2 is longer than the C2S - due to the fact that 70% of the 997s sold are C2S.

    Re: Cayman Info

...do not consider 997&997S to be STATIC, when Cayman comes...

Boxster and BoxsterS will STAY in price segment almost UNCHANGED to cover low end in price/customer segment...

    Cayman comes...
...first in CaymanS version with about 295hp (0-100 close to current 997, BUT BETTER on the track!, because of BETTER weight distribution=middle engine+less weight&with less hp, than 997, and $10K cheaper at about $60K in the US and 62.5K euros in EU...

...then with low end Cayman with about 260hp,for about $54K in the US and 55K euros in EU...

...then ... with "club sport" version with about 320hp (like GT3 or BMWM3CLS... stripped, less weight!)

All other Carreras (997 and 997s) move up 30hp, do not want to speculate about 997 future position, but 997s will NOT stay STATIC after Cayman introduction, later in about 1 year or so 997s will get a facelift in hp to about 385hp, PERFECT marketing case for PORSCHE AG small price increase!

Such PORSCHE AG combinations/marketing strategies are VERY GOOD for covering existing customer segments AND INTRODUCING NEW slightly lower budget customer to Cayman...

    Cayenne moves up in hp...
    Then Panamera Sport 4door sedan...

PERFECT MARKETING STRATEGY, PORSCHE AG!...at the same time BMW AG continues to FU** up it's own cars and CUSTOMERS!...HA-HA-HA... and PORSCHE TAKES OVER BMW car enthusiast customer base!

    Re: Cayman Info

Turbo ONLY coming with PDK double clutch? that may hurt sales a bit.

i suspect that it will have 6speed and PDK with NO tiptronic option (sort of like what BMW does with their ///M models)

    New M5 has ONLY SMG...

    Re: Cayman Info

    ...offtopic...
...you are right ONLY for EU market...

...for US BMW AG changed it's mind ALREADY...
...for US "manual 6speed" in addition to 7speedSMG will be available starting about launch in 2006...

...also, BMW AG WILL DROP P400("400hp only") M5 engine program mode FOR US market ONLY!...US M5s will have exclusively FULL POWER P500 mode ONLY!...

...for Europe for gas economical reasons M5 WILL KEEP economy P400 mode in addition to P500 mode...

...but PORSCHE AG will still undercut M5 $80K "pig" with smarter cheaper CaymanS,CaymanClubSport or price equal facelifted 997S!!! The same way, as BMW AG designed new M5 to undercut current 997s with equal price and performance, but with sedan lux and 4doors!...

    Re: Cayman Info

Wow - since when does the US get the enthusiast options instead of Europe? I'm impressed...

    Re: Cayman Info

since the USA is the biggest market for ///M Models

and our gas costs a lot less (at least for now)

But I imagine we were a big market in the mid-90's when we were getting the 240hp 5spd M3 when Europe had the 321hp 6spd and optional SMG...

    Re: Cayman Info

well, probably for emissions reasons in europe, they offer the -100 HP button to please the governemnts.

    Re: Cayman Info

    ...offtopic again...

In addition to very important reasons mentioned above...primary reason for this, in my opinion, is...
BMW AG is afraid to LOOSE "in money making" on this one...Stupid BMW AG just finally realized that fact, was SLOW on this one...

...as someone said, the best way to hurt the rich is to make him poor!...

...NO enthusiasts posts/requests, NO customer complains about new BMWs stupid designs NOTHING changed IGNORANT SELFISH BMW AG mind...until 2004... Ha-Ha-Ha...Many NOTstupid folks stopped buying BMWs and moved to PORSCHES/Audies/Lexuses/Infinities and MBs...

...Finally, looking into it's pockets/bank accounts in 2004! BMW AG started to realize, that they have LESS money, dealers STOPPED ordering new cars at the rate they did just few years ago, most of the new cars ARE STILL sitting on the dealer lots UNSOLD..., but at the same time PORSCHE AG and others are BOOMING?!...BMW AG dramatically changes lease customer acquisition rates for MUCH MORE friendly, despite base price increases NOT working (customers get DISCOUNTS, erasing the later...)...

...back to M5,... in 2004-05 BMW AG M///division engineers visited US and some smart ones+BMW NA sales realized, that if they DO NOT give US FOLKS WHAT WHEY WANT (full power+Manual) they will lose this money game to competition...P400-P500 modes is a good idea BUT ONLY works for EU and specifically German Autobahns, where you can FULLY enjoy true qualities of this new M5. New M5 in contrast to prev. versions IS CALIBRATED PRIMARILY for 100-270 km/h speeds, but NOT 0-100 km/h (as NEEDED in the US with it's speed limited hiwy environment). US needs MORE POWER at slower speed intervals to fight competition...OTHERWISE folks will STOP buying M5s, finally test driving them in REAL US streets environments and realizing, that "the king IS ACTUALLY without clothes..."... Couple of losses on real streets of LA, NYC, Miami, Boston to cheaper Jap. cars, Porsches, MBs and that's IT! Folks will start SELLING them like crazy...

...driving MOST of the time new M5 in P400 mode will KILL M5 as an "ultimate sport sedan idea" on real US streets...

...until new M5 US driver just realizes to go from default P400 mode to P500 and the CAR slowly changes into this mode street EGO competition IS OVER!!!...

...finally realizing above after first few months of owning a car demanding EGO US folks will start dumping M5s for competition...and BMW AG starts loosing money even more...
    ...MONEY TALKS!!!

...and that's, where PORSCHEs come in, our salvation!...There is no substitute!...

    Re: Cayman Info

According to Porsche UK's marketing manager, the Cayman will be priced "above" the Boxster S. This puts it at somewhat more then Pounds43K

This was a comment made during a conference with the Porsche Club GB by the way.

Of course they may have had a re-think

    Boxster S is Pounds38k

    Re: Cayman Info

    LOL!

    You are totally correct!
I don't know what I was thinking - for some reason I had in my head the Boxster S was 42K and the Cayman S would be 48K. Apologies.
(I should know how much the Boxster S is - I did buy one new... )

    Re: Cayman Info

I had a service for my boxster s in December and I asked regarding the coupe. the sales person confirmed that he had firm deposits for an awesome car that was Pounds43,000 and was 295 hp. It was supposed to be amazing. So being a fool I put down Pounds1000. my lease runs out in December 05 so I wanted it for this year. I am glad someone else has had Pounds43000 price because i think i wouldnt be able to afford it if it was much higher.
