According to what I've read, the disadvantage is it still may not have the sophistication of the 911's rear suspension, correct? This means, like the Boxster, the Cayman may be more affected by road corner imperfections at high speed than a 911. Is this true?

It may have more to do with basic layout.
A mid engine car has different polar inertia
and is ultimately better for a smooth race track.
A rear engine car has better traction and better handling
in rougher conditions. Its rear weight bias can be
a definite benefit.
As for a picking a 60,000 dollar Cayman,then adding on
4-6K in options, versus buying a stripped 997 at 69K with just heated seats,id take the 997, you simply get more car for your money.
