    Meanwhile at F2 Qualifying...

Whoopsy, I never intended to discount Russel. He is a hell of a driver, but I believe it does ask if Hamilton is that much better than anyone else. I guess we need to put Hamilton into another car, which will never happen.

I think that question is settled a looooooong time ago. He put Alonso in his place as a rookie driving a equal car against a 2 time defending world champion.

And Vettel is a 4 time world champ Smiley

I simply believe that a large part of todays F1 drivers would have a real opportunity to win in a Merc. Would they win against Hamilton, I am not sure, but Hamilton has to a large degree been driving against himself and his team mate for a long period, and even lost to Rosberg one year. F1 has been like this for decades and I do not see it change. Some people like to root for a car brand but I would like to see more of a series where it is the driver in focus and less the car.

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

    My thoughts:

    1. Motor-racing has always been about the car more than the driver. (One of the reasons I'm more of a sportscar guy. I'm interested in the cars, not necessarily the personalities).
    2. Only the mono- make series are driver focused because the "car factor" has been eliminated by providing all drivers with essentially the same machinery. (great spectacle..sometimes, but not my cup of tea)
    3. F1 decided long ago to promote (market) the drivers because they understood that most people can more easily relate to people than they can to cars. This is the reason that F1 has a much broader world-wide following than other series that tend to be more car focused.
    4. This is why  the " driver X is so much better than all the others" is nothing but a marketing narrative. At that level of professional driving, the difference between that various drivers is very small indeed. That is not to say that there are not other factors that come into play (eg. work ethic, relationship with team, communication skills, etc)
    5. What GR has shown is that most professional drivers at a F1 level , if given that chance to drive the dominant car, will quite easily be at the top (or near the top ) of the time sheets.

Thought you would take a liking to that number Smiley

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

    FP3

Bottas lost about 0.200s in the last corner.

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

    Well done GR kiss

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

Wow! 0.02 seconds off pole in his first race? Can't wait for tomorrow's race.

The race may be a different kettle of fish:

    • GR has little experience in the car and has no experience (with the Mercedes) under race conditions.
    • He is very tall and as the car was not designed and built to accommodate his height, he may be uncomfortable sitting in the car over a long period of time.
    • GR has never been at the sharp-end of a F1 field at the start so it may get a little "complicated".

Having said all that, I really hope he does well, but he has already proven his value....and my point.

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

Russell won the GP3 and F2 championship before, so he has experience running in the front and leading and such.

His size difference against Hamilton's cockpit size could be a problem, earlier fatigue could set in before the end of the race. But then again if he is leading or close to the lead, the adrenaline could take over and mitigate the discomfort enough.

You did, but one cannot discount previous experiences even in other contests. Like even Stroll, one of the slowest drier in the field, have previous experiences too, think he won something somewhere before.

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

GR is excellent, but let's also not forget that this track is the least challenging and the one that demands the less drivers skills of all the track of the season. Mostly straights, just let the car do it's job.

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

Bottas doesnt make the more experience impression of the both mercedes drivers angryyes not surprised though... It'S pressure baby...smiley

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

Bottas is the big loser here since Russel was asking about steering wheel buttons after the race already started.  I wonder how Hamilton would do in Russel’s Williams.

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

It's quite embarrassing for Bottas... they should have signed somebody else... MAX, then we would have a champioinship fight!!!

This is just a joke.... what did they do???? Anyhow.. GR is todays winner, what a bunch of idiots!!!! yesmail

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

What a disaster for Mercedes.  Who made that last second stacked pit stop when they didn’t even need to pit?

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

Without Hamilton, Mercedes turns into Ferrari.  Russell needs another chance in that seat.

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

I am very happy for Perez after been kicked out of this team... leaving with a victory!!!! He really deserved it

About Mercedes I can only say what a shame!!! mail

    Russel... BRAVO

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

    CRAZY race...

    Re: [2020] Formula 1

Russel’s puncture might have come from debris from his regular race car. How unfortunate.
