    Clutches

The clutch on my 1997 993 C2 Cab has just started to slip after around 42-43 k miles. I was wondering if anyone has had clutches go and how long they lasted. On my 1996 BMW 525 the clutch also went at arund 45 k miles so Im not too concerned. Also does anyone have recomendations for a good aftermarket clutch?
    thanks cary

    Sounds about right

A lot depends upon how you use it. I think in the right hands they can go a lot further than that. It just depends.

Mine has 55,000 km on it now on a Turbo and is still ok despite having to occasionally back out of a few underground parking garages that aren't appropriately accomidating. Nasty smell.

One issue will be why it failed. Look for any signs of oil in the clutch plate area. The 996's have a problem with the rear seal. Not sure if your 993 does also.

    Re: Sounds about right

I had a rubber hubed Sachs clutch in my 944S2 that lasted 70k miles before the hub failed. The friction lining on the clutch could have lasted a little longer but probably not much. I replaced it with the new Sachs that has a more conventional hub. The new clutch has 55k miles on it now and I expect it will last at least as long as the last one.

Don't get the idea I baby these things. I do my share of bringing the revs up and sidestepping the clutch. I also occasionally powershift (throttle to the floor, stab the clutch and slam the next gear).

I would make sure it is adjusted properly before replacing it. A clutch that is completely worn will give you some metal on metal grinding noises. It is normal for a clutch to become out of adjustment as it wears. If it is engaging near the end of the pedal travel (all the way up) it could be slipping because it is always partially disengaged and just needs adjustment. It should engage somewhere in the middle of the pedal travel. If it slips there (and your seal is not leaking) than you probably do need a new clutch.

How long they last is extremely variable. Your present mileage is not too unusual for a clutch failure but is on the early side I think. If you can't diagnoise it yourself, take to someone you trust.

    Recommendations

I'm sorry! You asked for recommendations. Put in the Porsche factory supplied or recommended part. If goes out in another 40k miles, that's life. I have done more than my share of aftermarket parts and modifications and I believe you are ahead, in most cases, relying on the manufacturer's advice.

    Re: Clutches

I think 42-47 k is miles impressive, you shouldn't worry at all. Stay with the Porsche clutch, it is the best compromise regarding wear and performance.
