    X Motor Question

    Some recent discussion on the X50 and X51 has some unanswered questions. Can anyone provide some insight?

    Are the X motors built on the same assembly line as the normal motors or seperate?

    Do the X motors have a different assembly / test procedure as was reported in Excellence Magazine?

    Do the X motors use weight matched pistons, rods, etc. that the normal motors do not?

    The only question I can answer is the first one.
    Yes, they are assembled on the same line as all the engines.
    I saw it at Zuffenhausen when I did the factory visit,
    One man is assigned to one engine from start to finish, from the 2.7L to the 3.6L Turbo. And there is a document with the man that describes the engine specs, Boxster, 996, etc incl X spec or no, so YES they are built on the same assembly line.

    Same assembly procedure, different parts. Nothing more, nothing less.

    Interesting. On another board I just got the answer that there are 4 lines in the plant based on a recent visit, but the X51 is built on the same line as the std 911 3.6 an is not on the special line which is only dry sump motors.

    The "old" X51 for the 996 before the facelift was build on the same assembly line as the standard M96 engine too BUT some (minor) assembly work was done on a special work place next to the GT3 engine assembly.
    I thought this might be interesting...somehow.
