Phone module question (for UK drivers again - sorry)

I've just spoken to Vodafone who are going to send me another sim card for my 997. However, they are going to charge me Pounds7 a month for the privilege, and what's more, they will not include calls to other networks as part of my "free minutes".

Has anyone else experienced this with other networks? I can't believe they penalise me for basically using their phone more often.

I'm concerned about the phone situation and will be looking into my options this week. I have read that Vodaphone are the only people offering duplicated sim cards.

Re: Phone module question (for UK drivers again - sorry)

I've arranged a duplicate sim card through my mobile phone provider and Vodafone. I have a large number of mobiles with them through my business and so am not being charged for the duplicate SIM. I pointed out that I cannot use both SIMs at the same time so how can I be charged extra.

I have a personal line and a business line with Vodafone, so your post has made me think they are stringing me along a bit. I'll give them a call and see if I can get an extra sim on my business line. Cheers for the reply.

That's right only Vodafone has the multi-sim function that allows you to receive and make calls to the same number in your car and on your handheld phone. You need to switch between sims manually by calling a short code number as you get in the car. The main problem is remembering to switch back to your handheld as you get out of the car . Roll on factory fitted bluetooth

Re: Phone module question (for UK drivers again - sorry)

Blimey - didn't realise you had to key a code in. I've got Bluetooth in my current car, and it's SO easy. I can even use it when my phone is in the boot of the car!

Re: Phone module question (for UK drivers again - sorry)

Could one of you UK people scan and post the GSM operation instructions, that would really be appreciated
    TIA

Re: Phone module question (for UK drivers again - sorry)

I had bluetooth it was great and as a result I did not order a telephone module, however now that the car has arrived I am not keen to have someone dismantle the dash to install Bluetooth, or to have the bluetooth button visible. I am attempting to get the telephone module retro fitted, but as yet it is not available, (was to be available from Dec).
I was pursuaded finally by the ability to read text messages on screen (My daughters text rather than speak)

Vodafone told me that the second sim cannot be used for text messages unfortunately.

Re: Phone module question (for UK drivers again - sorry)

There is another option. If you get a new sim/number for use in your car you can just set your usual mobile number to divert all calls to your car number whilst driving.

I must check with my dad how his duplicate sim card works in his 7 series. I'm pretty sure that he doesn't have to enter a code to activate it. As far as I know he just has to switch of his mobile handset whilst in the car. I think he also receives texts in the car.

Re: Phone module question (for UK drivers again - sorry)

Good news for 02 users, I've just spoken to 02 and they are introducing this March a True duplicate sim card, specifically because of the car phone problem, full details are a not available at the moment but I have been promised a free sim card in March.
    Fantastic....

That is fantastic news - can you let us know the details when you find out? If it's free, I'll get on to Vodafone and threaten to leave unless they do the same. Here's hoping.

Of course, as soon as I'm told anything I'll post the details. Funny thing is... I was just going to threaten 02 with a move to Vodafone until the good news.
    And it's free

Re: Phone module question (for UK drivers again - sorry)

Med cheers for great news regarding 02 duplicate sims i am with 02 and was gonna go the divert calls route as i spoke to 02 a month ago and they said they were unable to offer me a duplicate sim I am getting my c2s next week so if you are correct i will just wait until march

Re: Phone module question (for UK drivers again - sorry)

In case anyone is in my position (waiting for a module to be fitted) Porsche have distributed instructions on how to fit them to the dealers 1.7-2.7 hours work, which is good, of course distributing some modules would be even better but it can't be long now, may be the same in the USA

Re: Phone module question (for UK drivers again - sorry)

Just to add my two cent's worth to this discussion. I currently have a Vodafone dual sim as a result of ordering the wrong phone system for my BMW X5 but not for long. Why? well:
    1. It removes half the functionality of the system - no gprs, no multimedia messaging etc
    2. They have multiple problems with the lines so that over the last year I have had days with no line at all due to the multi-sim operation.
    3. As a result of the problems they are discouraging people from taking the multi-sim option by making the packages exhorbitant. My December phone bill was Pounds2700!!! Admittedly I was travelling during a good part of that month, but I was told that on a regular package the bill would have been Pounds1000!!! My company has literally hundreds of lines with Vodafone and they're not interested in assisting us as they can't get the technology right.
    4. You have to activate the sim card you want each time you move into or out of the car with a bizzare code system. If you forget and the car is off you stop getting calls etc etc.

The answer? I have just got a cheap contract with vodafone for another line to which i divert my mobile when i get in the car. Much easier and MUCH cheaper.

That is unbelievable - if you have to enter a long code, I may as well just take the sim out of my phone and put it in the car - how can this be that difficult??

It will be interesting to see how the O2 dual sim works - I can see myself switching to them shortly if it is better.

Likewise, I've posted a thread previously about this phone/sim problem. I've had my 997s about two months now and initially I used to swap the sim card over but now (unless I'm going on a long journey) I don't bother, it's too much of a pain, I just use the phone in my hand which has it's obvious drawbacks.

If the O2 thing comes off I'll be well impressed and will change from Orange immediately, please keep us updated!

Robbo, as you are already with O2, what kind of package do you get with them? Getting exited??!!

Re: Phone module question (for UK drivers again - sorry)

Same problem - asked Vodaphone for a dual sim and was told that it worked out really expensive, and was not that good ( not the chat I got from porsche when ordering ) - porsche firstly should own up to this as they are miss selling this at present, also they should have gone with a bluetooth solution so that it simply recognises the phone in your pocket - can be done as a retro fit

Re: Phone module question (for UK drivers again - sorry)

There is another, cheaper solution. There is a product called visorcom which is basically a small bluetooth unit that clips onto your sunvisor and allows voice dialling with bluetooth compatible mobiles. A guy on a BMW E60 forum swears that it is a very good solution. I think the unit costs around Pounds70 and will hold a charge for up to 3 weeks depending upon usage. You can also use it at work or at home to make hands free calls on your mobile.

You can see it here Visorcom link
