I would order without a doubt. I have a 997S in the UK and use it a lot! Also got a BMW 330 coupe and this doesn't have one and I find it a pain in traffic when it is raining. Yes the screen does clear slightly in the 997 without the wiper at speed but in traffic I think it is dangerous not to be able to see properly. Also when reversing it is difficult to see if you can't clear the screen.

a "must have", i don't think so, because you can perfectly live without;
but practical, yes, very much indeed, as a single wipe of the rear window let you see everything behing perfectly. I use it regularly when it rains, and I am stuck in traffic jam, or am driving at low speed in the city.
I didn't want to order it at first, in the fear that the it would broke the pure lines of the car. Now that I have a rear wiper, I am very happy with it, it is very light, very useful and discovered that it "melts" with the curves very wisely.
If I was in your situation [living in the wet weather of the UK] I would probably ask for it.

I haven't ordered one on mine. I think it looks awful and was surprised that you couldn't delete it on the 996. I currently drive an Audi TT and have not missed not having a rear wiper once. It's different with estate cars, when the rear window is vertical, as they get very dirty, but not when the rear window is in the air stream.

I had the rear wiper on my 993, and like the 997, it was mounted in the glass, not on the body of the car. The rattles and squeeks were so annoying on my 993 that I decided against ordering it for my 997, despite the fact that it is a practical option. I believe the rear wiper for the 996 is mounted on the body of the car.

Thanks guys, really appreciate all your views, I am concerned about visability when reversing in the rain and slow driving in town. Thought it would be a standard UK item if it was really required, but having not speced it originally as an extra - I'm having bad second thoughts

I ordered my 997S with a rear wiper and then immediately starting having second thoughts. Now that I have the car I am so glad that i ordered the rear wiper. The wiper is great when raining and driving in traffic...rear visibility is crap when you are driving in the rain at slow speeds in heavy traffic.

I have it on mine - it doesn't look out of place (and is in fact quite subtle). It can't be retrofitted, and given the amount of rain in this country it is bound to be of some use. My dealer told me that the rear glass is hydrophobic, although I'm not convinved this is true, and am pretty certain this is only the side windows.
Then again, four years with a boxster and practically zero rear visibility, and I never needed one then.
I do recommend park assist however - the system works well, and if you're considering omitting the wiper it may pay you back in the long run.

I have one on my car. It hasn't rained enough for me to decide on its utility but I haven't noticed any rattles or squeaks.
My guess is that retrofitting would be a nightmare and require a new rear screen.
I did once retrofit a rear wiper to a 968 Club Sport but that was easy because the rear screen already had the hole with a blanking plate, it was easy to get to and all the wiring was already in the car.

There are no rattles or squeaks for this new generation of rear wipers; I've understood that this was due to a different location of its mecanism [compared to the 993 series]. Also, there's the intermittent option of the rear wiper [if I'm not wrong this was missing on 993 series?] which makes its use unobtrusive.
I can confirm that the rear window isn't hydrophobic; only the side windows are.
