CLS 55 AMG - first look impression

I was last week in Stuttgart and I saw three silver CLS 55 AMG with license plates from BB (Böblingen) driving around, I even drove next to one for a while.
My first impression? The CLS looks bigger than a Mercedes S-class. Second impression? It looks more elegant than a Mercedes S-class and definetely more attractive and eye-catching. Third impression? It looks weird, interesting but somehow not really as sporty as I thought it would look when I saw the first pictures.

I'm pretty sure that the CLS will be a huge success due to it's eye-catching look but beware to order one before seeing it live for real: the CLS looks huge and it does not look sporty. It looks very elegant, very special though.

Re: CLS 55 AMG - first look impression

I've been saying it from day 1 and you subjective impressions confirm it , RC. This car was coldly calculated as Mercedes' answer to the " women who do lunch together " Jaguar crowd . Think about it - all the aggressive macho AMG 55s and 65s don't mean squat to the " glide down to the chic bistro " fashion mavens . The CLK was supposed to be the MBZ " girly car ", but has always clinic'd very negatively with them - too stubby , squat and again " masculine "( must be a Freudian thing ).
Note the slab of oval tree stump used as the dash : very "Jag- you-wah " dahling !

Re: CLS 55 AMG - first look impression

And all Porsche 911's and Ferrari's are sold in to the hands of 25 year-old track-experienced enthusiasts? Funny, all the Porsche's I seen are driven by grumpy old business types, so called "enthusiasts". The CLS is in a class of its own, too small interior wise to be a saloon, one door too many to be a coupe.

No need to generalise and make uncalculated/unspported assumptions.

you mean 2 doors too many?

anyway, what i was hinting at, was that i'm glad that internally at companies, the discussion is more blunt and to the point than the marketing has us to believe their intentions are.

enough politically correct crap, im glad that internally, there is truth., im tired of all this Politically correct crap everywhere, glad to see some people speak their minds and have a real discussion about it.

Re: CLS 55 AMG - first look impression

well that was basically an attack at political correctness

just a pet peeve of mine,

i f*ckin hate it when people say things like 'preowned' to make themselves feel better.

and that all the subtle mindf*cking in advertising today, like the suzuki cars commercial that boasts "honda, too generic, toyota too expensive"... i mean come on...

and don't get me started on the rape of the word 'sporty/sports car' in advertising.

its especially refreshing when someone goes around these things and just says whats really on their mind, no matter who that may 'offend', but since people are a bunch of oversensitive nancys looking to start an argument, no one is REALLY offended these days, especially with the desensitization twoards real issues like violence, sex, etc.

i like when someone just calls their car used, instead of preowned and that sort of BS. if someone needs to resort to symantics to make themselves feel better about not being able to afford something they really wanted, its stupid, but if it works for them, sure go ahead.

Re: CLS 55 AMG - first look impression

OK, so basically you want people to sometimes just express what they're feeling in regards to something without having prior consideration as to the topic matter or its credibility, just pure top-of-the-head will do.

In that case, all 911's look the same and Bangle-designed BMW's look sh!t

Re: CLS 55 AMG - first look impression

thats fine AMG, your entitled to your opinion

see that? most people in american are too tight assed to say that., instead they have to make personal attacks on the person who says it, find nancy-ass ways to soften a statement so stupid quick-triggered people won't get offended, or curl up into a ball and say we need more laws.

personally i think the 911 platform is fundamentally flawed, but somehow they've made it work, and its the most recognizable shape in the world for a reason... and a byproduct of that is one form or another of similarity.

    long live the pre-bangle BMWs

Re: CLS 55 AMG - first look impression

it works beautifully, epecially in the newer elevens,

but the theory of putting the engine behind the rear axle goes against all the laws of physics.

Re: CLS 55 AMG - first look impression

The question is, if they moved the engine upwards and removed the two rear seats, would it be even "better"? Handling and dynamics wise, my brain says yes. Traction perhaps may suffer slightly, I am not sure. However, people love their back seats in the 911, not to mention Porsche purists and marketing strategists opposing any change.

the boxster can do more Gs on the skidpad than a 911. these are porsche's own figures, so i would assume the tires, etc are all the same.

the mid engine platform is the ideal platform in terms of performance, (F1/CGT/various supercars)

and to be perfectly honest, the backseats on the 911 are barebones at best, most americans would not fit, children are the only candidate for sitting there with any sort of comfort

however, theres are some situations where those backseats are useful, you just can't fit 3 ladies into the passenger seat of a roadster.

the 911 seats are there from a marketing/insurance perspective only.

Re: CLS 55 AMG - first look impression

The CLS was designed in Orange County , Southern California - not Germany. It was designed and clinic'd to women driving Jags and Lexus cars . Trust me on this.
( Did anyone who subscribes to Autoweek , on the Oct 25th CLS 500 cover issuse note the ironic two page ad just inside the front cover ? )
