    Question about haggling

    Hi all,

This is the first time in my life that I can now afford a high perf sports car. All my life I have haggled my way through every car I bought new or used.

I get the feeling that everyone here just pays sticker (or maybe a little below). If the dealer thinks I'm rich and should pay sticker screw him whether or not I'm rich. Car dealers "deal" thats why they are dealorships and not sale ships (for lack of a better term).

I've heard some people getting up to 6% off MSRP, thats my goal and I'm in no hurry to buy. I have my car specc'ed out but I doubt I can order a car with my specs and get a deal, is that right? I probably would have better leverage dealing when the car is on the lot (not letting the sales guy know that I really want that car).

Yes I'm a tight ass I guess, but thats just the way I've bought cars before. Is there anyone out there like me? (echo echo echo)

    Re: Question about haggling

i'm like that too, i refuse to pay MSRP for a car, or above MSRP, for me, it has to be under MSRP, otherwise i feel raped, no matter how good the car is.

i even managed to get $1000 off a 2005 911 Turbo S cabriolet order (only 500 produced), which involved playing hard to get with a dealer for 4 days straight.

anyways, it is possible to get money off a ordered car, but as you said, it will be less than you can get off a car thats on the lot, burning a hole in the dealer's pocket.

start from invoice up, and make it clear to the dealer that you know what your talking about, tell him you are going to buy this car/order it THAT day, and you are just looking at which dealer/salesman is giving the best deal.

the 997S is being discounted, but less so on ordered cars, you should be able to get at least 5-6k off a car on the lot if you are at least competant at 'haggling' (who uses that term anymore , i just refer to it as doing my research)

    good luck

    Moogle, sorry to say that:

you've got a quarter Million in your garage and are proud about 1000$ you negotiated on a TTS? Huahaha!

It is more of a question if I am willing to pay a certain amount of money for an item or not - if I am not I will drive a hard bargain.

Besides that there is more about a customer relation than just the price - if the dealer is not willing to offer anything else it might be the only solution to lower the price tag - or to move to another dealer!

    Just my 02 cents!

Where are you doing your shopping? The rest of us would love to see a deal like that on a Carrera S. My local dealer has a single car avaialable as a January build.

    Re: Question about haggling

Wait a couple of months and see how sales are going.

If they are having a hard time selling the cars 'demand' a few thousand off and order the car you want, and forget about what you paid.

Haggling is what Ford and GM etc dealerships are for.

Too much of a hassle to get dirty like this. You got $90-100K to blow on a car and yet you don't want the dealership to make a decent-to-good profit selling it to you and possibly taking care of _you_ later?

    Re: Question about haggling

You guys have the life !!! or just dreaming - discount in the UK - with a 12 month waiting list, you have got to be kidding...they even sell the demonstrators for list price with 6k miles on them..NO discount - buy it or leave it

    Re: Question about haggling

well the UK market is undertandably tighter, you guys are confined to that little island

but i understand the service at the OPC's is much better than our version of the 'OPC' here in the states:

Ferdie, yes, i understand that for a 160k car, reducing 1k isnt going to really affect anyone's bottom line be it mine, or the dealers, i just like the idea that i'm not paying list and that i got my way instead of him getting his (which was a 5k premium - so i didn't do too bad).

Stephen if you are interested in buying a P-car in the near future, i have a great relationship with a dealer in my local area (NYC) and they are willing to make GREAT deals for people i recommend to them. shoot me a PM we'll get this ball rolling

    cheers

    Tom

    Well...

Anyways, I enjoy your contributions to the forum so I can live with your attitude...

Well, if you CAN afford a 997 Carrera S, you ARE rich, if you like it or not. It also depends on how you define the word "rich". For a poor farmer in Africa or Asia, even a German getting social aid and not working is rich.
Compared to Bill Gates, you might be poor as a mouse.

Everybody wants to save money, if "rich" or not.
I don't like it to pay over MSRP and I NEVER did.
But sometimes I wanted something badly and immediately after it showed up (not only cars) and I had to pay MSRP to get it. If you're willing to let the "novelty" phase pass by (should be around one year on the 997), I'm sure you'll get some interesting offers from dealers.
While I paid maybe a few thousands more but had the chance to enjoy the 997 Carrera S much earlier. Life is easy, you just have to make choices.

Haha too true! "rich" is a relative term.

I still gotta haggle anytime I buy something over $1000, guess its in my defective genes.

Anyway all is good for anyone who can play around with one of these toys, I hope to be in one before I'm too old!
