Carrera GT Racer, the 989, I'm paraphrasing from "Excellence was Expected" here. The 989 was conceived by Ulrich Bez, it was going to be a front engined, rear drive car powered by a 3.6L newly designed 80 degree water cooled double overhead cam chain driven V8 with 4 valves per cylinder. Competing with this new engine was the "Indy V8" HP ranges were from approx 320-350 with a 3.3 to 3.6L motor. Turbocharging was considered as well as a Tiptronic and PDK transmission. Wheelbase was to be 111.3 inches. Lower profits and higher than estimated costs finally killed the deal. Interestingly the current CEO of PAG was a prime factor in this decision from a cost point of view.
It is a fascinating story into Porsche's inner politics.
Some obvious design features made it to the 993, however.
