Knowing the current C class the E class is a surpise because it looks the same (size). The E class isn't a surprise... it's more like a deja vu and therefore a huge disappointment. I'm sure when you say the volume sellers being the most conservative you meant the C not the E Right? Because in 2008 the E runs with the A6 and BMW 5er not the 3er.
The E could have been so much more.. german cars have always had the edge in design, and asians copied it usually always.. but lately it seems to go the other way
I was told in the past that the E was the volume seller for the US market at least , as we all know the last C was barely adeq even as a service loaner ( it felt like driving a Toyota Corolla ) .

Hey, the Hyundai Sonata is a great car. Just bought my daugher a brand new 2009 - bigger than the Accord, 5 star crash rating, i-pod (hello Porsche), memory stick, traction control, stability control, ABS, Michelin tires, Satelite radio, 5-speed auto, A/C, six airbags - Total $14,995 plus $ 300 in fees. No freight or other BS charges. 10 year 100K miles powertrain upgraded to bumper to bumper at no cost PLUS free oil changes for life (up to 4 per year) at the dealer. PLUS it looks like the new Accord (and now the new E-Class).
Nice car for the Money - For the cost of the e-class I could by 5 or 6 of these Sonatas. Remind me why anyone would buy the E-class?

I saw a brand new black Hyundai Genesis for the first time today as it drove slowly by . Yeah , it's copy of 5 year old Lexedes and you wouldn't see ME in one ...but .. if $35K is all one could afford for a family car ..wow ! Must be why a recent auto industry survey said US Hyundai dealerships are changing ownership at multiples of gross for similar to what Lexus ones sold for 7-10 years ago because of projected upside .
Interesting comment from Hyundai's chief designer, formerly of Audi . He says their bosses in South Korea don't want an " iconic " brand identity yet , they don't feel the market is ready , but in maybe 5-10 years , they will all have a unique higher style " Hyundai " family resemblence when they feel they have earned the public's perception of a more premium brand . Very patient , long term astute business planning , IMO.
Contrast that to Honda's struggles with the Acura brand which has been around for 22 years now . They figured if they gave each new model that horrific instantly iconic " gladiator " snout it would set the brand apart .. yeah, it's done that for sure.
