What can you connect to the Nav System?

    Hi,

The car still hasn't arrived, but I'm starting to plan things as it's getting closer
It's a Cayenne S and should arrive in October or November, so I guess it's an October '04 build? This is an '04 model I presume?

What can you connect to the Nav system's screen? I checked out the German site which seems to have all the options. According to it, Porsche offers some options which are only available for cars delivered in December or later. Does the nav system change for the '05 model?
I'm mostly interested in things such as video inputs which are used by the porsche tuner, reverse camera etc. Can you connect any other devices than the ones Porsche offers? I might want a digital tuner for example.
    How about playing DVD:s?

If you've got links where I can find more specific info on the nav system, I'd like those too, thanks!

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Re: What can you connect to the Nav System?

For European vehicles there is a TV tuner option, that sends analog video into the rear of the PCM2 and the audio through MOST. No word yet if that includes and aux input to that unit. No word yet if that is compatible with NTSC or is PAL-only. That is not available for the U.S.

NAV-TV has a PCM2 mod that connects analog video to the rear of the PCM2 and audio through an FM modulator. With that mod the dealership can not flash updated software into the PCM2, using the PST2 or PST3, or the NAV-TV changes would be lost.

Re: What can you connect to the Nav System?

Thanks for the reply! Hopefully the TV Tuner includes a video input. I'm in Finland (the land of long distances and expensive cars), so this option is available. I'd like to connect a digital tuner i order to get good quality reception, which isn't very easy with a mobile analogue system I suspect.

I find some info on google on that "hack", which seems a bit too risky and unpractical.

I assume that the dealership could in theory turn on the "Tuner switch" with their computer, as it seems this is all that is needed. Porsche probably wouldn't like that very much though .

Re: What can you connect to the Nav System?

    Denn,

Check this with RC. He posted here some time ago about some change in navigation software that allows you to see more about the car during off roading. You can try to search he forum too to find he actual RC post.

Re: What can you connect to the Nav System?

The reverse camera is an option on Cayenne starting from Jan '04 I think.

That is not correct. There is a tuner module that communicates with the PCM2 using the MOST fiber optical bus. Yes, if this is added after the vehicle is built, then the vehicle will need to be told that a new module is present.

If it is planned to have this option, then it is MUCH better to have it installed at the factory. Porsche has found that they may offer savings directly to their customers by not including ANY wires, connectors or connector contacts that are not required for the vehicle, as it leaves the factory.

So what could / should be an easy upgrade turns into a rip the vehicle apart ordeal. The wiring harness is modified and any hopes the Porsche design engineers had for the durability of this critical component is dashed.

So, if the TV will end up in your Cayenne, let this one pass and order another from the factory with the options you want.

    This is very good advice.

My dealer has told me the same, exact thing regarding Porsche A/V accessories more than once.
