    Tuning a C63 AMG

My fiancee recently took delivery of a C63 and was horrified by the insatiable thirst of its fuel consumption. However, I heard from her brother that if the AMG engine was "tuned up", the engine would be more fuel efficient as a result. Being very unmechanically-minded, I'm wondering how this could be feasible.
Would welcome any engineering boffins to have a stab at this explanation!

On the fun side, the car delivers absolutely stonking performance (will post some piccies over the next few days) - very impressive for any Merc on this side of an SLR. Well, at least it's keeping me entertained while I await my MY'09 AMV8 arriving in a few weeks!

Separately, in a game of one-upmanship (yes very sad, I'm competing with my fiancee on speed issues ), my other half is insistent that her C63 would ourtrun my new 4.7l Vantage to 100mph on track AND in a real world environment.
Anyone want to take a wager on this one?

    Re: Tuning a C63 AMG

By "tuning up" the car I'm assuming he means a free flow exhaust, ecu tune, and perhaps some form of cold air intake. The engine in the C63 is "detuned" and produces about 50 less hp when compared to the higher end 63 offerings such as the SL63. This is probably accomplished through a restricted air box (hence cold air intake could lead to further efficiency) and is done to keep the C63 from stepping on the SL63's toes. I am not familiar with aftermarket offerings for the C63 but you may want to look at Brabus, Kleeman, or Lorinser. With said modifications the C63 will walk an AMV8 at any speed but will not offer the same kind of sports car feel (and doesn't look nearly as sexy). Hope this helps.

The C63 is stepping on the SL63 toes anyway, in real world. According to many tests the C63 is actually faster than the SL63, CLS63.

There was even AMG statement that the engine is detuned just through ECU but I think it is questionable considering the performance. Might be detuned just on the paper not to "threaten" more expensive model at first look.

    Re: Tuning a C63 AMG

I highly doubt the C63 has the 510 or so hp claimed for the SL63 but would not be surprised if it were as fast as the SL because of lower weight.

    Re: Tuning a C63 AMG

Despite the weight differences, it is still way too fast. If I take a look at the results CLS63 vs C63, C63 is faster than it should be considering all the factors.

I also thought Merc were sending ringers C63 with more than 500hp to tests. But vids of privately owned cars on youtube show similar performance.

    Re: Tuning a C63 AMG

Until I see accurate dyno results proving the car has ~500hp I have to believe it is mostly due to the weight differences between the cars. Acceleration results showing the car to be "faster than it should" be do not count as adequate evidence that Mercedes is lying about power output.

Owned an SLK... SOLD in 6 months. That's because MB cars are slow with large fuel consumption. They are far behind BMW's in terms of technology. And technology in engineering means "Best performance out of the engine with lowest fuel consumption". This law does NOT apply to ANY Mercedes car. If you care about performance and decent fuel consumption; just sell the car and get something else instead. Sorry, but that's the way it goes.MB cars are big, heavy, thirsty tanks that can offer nothing.

From what I can surmise from your posts thus far, any car not wearing a Porsche or BMW badge is worthless...

    Re: Tuning a C63 AMG

I have a C63. The only thing slow about it is...actually nope, nothing is slow about my C63. Georgie, I have a 135i too and this is the first Merc/AMG I have ever had. It's a damn impressive car and I think BMW is definitely weary of this and all the new AMG products!

JYH, DMS automotive in the UK can tune the car for an extra 30kw and 30nm. I really doubt there will be a reduction of fuel consumption though. But if you think the Merc is thirsty, wait till you get the Aston. My Aston has much worst fuel consumption compared to the C63!

    Re: Tuning a C63 AMG

WAY - now you're worrying me! LOL! At first blush, I thought that with the Aston being a lighter/smaller car with a smaller engine capacity, it'd be more fuel efficient than the C63 in the real world. I met with some Aston folk in Singapore recently and I think their fuel consumption reading (for mainly city driving) was c.19l/100km. From what I've seen on my fiancee's car, she's getting around 22-26l/100km. Plus, the new MY'09 Vantage should give some added benefit to fuel efficiency. Ah well....at least I'm not in London paying 120p/litre for super unleaded!....Singapore's is still equivalent to less than 75-80p/litre :-)

On the C63 tuning, I'm surprised that there wouldn't be any improved fuel consumption achieved via better combustion/cold air intake?

    Re: Tuning a C63 AMG

Haha maybe it's just how you drive the Aston compared to AMG. When I drive the Aston, it's always metal to the pedal as you just want to rev that car up to hear the engine. With the AMG, the soundtrack is just as good, but you can't possibly be as aggresive on the accelerator becuase you would be going crazy fast! Btw, your fiance's fuel consumption is on the high side. I am getting about 17-18/100km. I get about 25 on the Aston. But then again there is much more traffic in Singapore compared to the freeways and open roads here.

You obviously don't know my fiancee.....I think she's got F1 fever with all the Singapore hype and has an insatiable need for speed! The AMG IS crazy fast, as you put it....it only takes a small provocation of the throttle to send u into the bumper of the next car 100m ahead!

Think it comes back to the issue about how you drive the car. Case in point (you may have seen this already...):
