650 HP Porsche 959 in for service

I heard from a friend that a Porsche 959 was at my local dealership for service. Apparently the blowoff valve was leaking so they had to pull it apart to send off the valves to the original "tuner." I was also surprised that this car was apparently legalized for use on US roads. I think this took place under a special "show and exhibition" law that limits usage to about 1200 miles a year. Anyways here are some pictures I took.

Hard to imagine anyone's missed this link, but just in case...

Wayne, the owner of Pelican Parts, bought a "distressed" 959 last October and has been meticulously restoring it and documenting the process in excruciating detail with thousands of photos and editorial comments. Start at the bottom and work your way up, it's a great read. I was particularly fascinated to read his attempts to service the suspension hydraulics (you can see the nitrogen pressure accumulator on the left in your "twin coilover" pic above).

I took these in Boston about a year ago, owned by the dealer, sitting on the 3rd floor, 1st floor bmw, 2nd floor mini cooper, 3rd floor porsche. Cool place.

This car is in pristine condition.

I saw one about a year ago at my dealer in Paris it had qatari plates

It probably was either Bill Gates' or Paul Allens' 959. I'd probably guess that it's Paul's because he is much more outrageous than Bill when it comes to many things.

I think the gunmetal gray finish on the wheels is the natural color of their magnesium construction (same color as my magnesium engine and transmission cases).

Cool stuff. Love seeing 959's, last one I saw was at RUF's here in Pfaffenhausen.

Canepa Designs is a legal US importer of these beast machines and it's said his come out with a bit more power than factory.

Obviously bill has more time on his hands now he's quit the microsoft day job.

Shame about the pictures, i can't see there being any problems aslong as the licence plate wasnt shown.

What is supprising even though it's old and some may say ''dated'' the technology isnt, most modern cars are only just starting to have 959 technology 20+ years later!!!!

Stunning car way ahead of it's time, just rather amasing that an old car can have such advanced computer controled stuff.

Obviously theses days everything possible with low cost computer technology.

It would be rather interesting to see the engineers who built them.

...certainly cant warm to d-bags who are so paranoid from to much money and zero common sense as to think anyone viewing jasons great photos would make the quantum plus leap from those pix to what ever travails were envisioned as a result ( barfy face ) ...i think we need one ,RC

I think most folk with high value cars are too paranoid about them being stolen etc but why have such a supercar which attracts atenttion from both enthusiasts and thieves.

Were just enthusiasts which like anything fast and german, and burns rubber and petrol......

I just think it boils down to hidden greed not to even share imagies of the car, and if thats the case the owner should drive around with a cover over it!

Because then people see not just the car but the sad person driving it.

Bill Gates is hardly what I'd call a greedy D-bag, his and his wife's foundation has raised billions of dollars to help the less fortunate of this world. I don't blame him at all for wanting the pictures removed, when you're worth >1 billion, why would you want to attract more attention. I see this as a security issue, not something more sinister/pathetic.

Definite security issue. You never hear about it and hard to believe but, in the USA, families with major sums of money, not just the super rich and famous, not infrequently suffer threats or actual kidnapping and k-attempts.

That said, can somebody tell me the color of the car? I'm not a terrorist; I'm just a curious BG fan. I wonder what he was thinking when he ordered it. Send me a PM if necessary.

Hey Res, I see what you mean. When I first saw pictures of the 959, I really disliked the looks of it. Now that I know that it is a truely remarkable machine, which was way ahead of it's time, and really, really an extreme car, it turns out that I love it!

It was silver although I'm not sure what color the interior was. Kind of looked like dark maroon to me.

I saw the same 959 RacerX did, it's still at Herb Chambers Porsche in Boston on Commonwealth ave. It's a beautiful example, and I'm told it's for sale if the price is right....

And this one was at Porsche of Nashua, it was Mr. Lyons car I believe (the owner of a few dealerships, including Porsche) And it has the Canepa kit to make it legal in the states.
