    BMW 'cancels E92 M3 CSL'

    http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Secret-new-cars/Search-Results/Spyshots/BMW-cancels-E92-M3-CSL/

BMW has shelved plans to produce a lighter and sharper CSL version of the E92 M3. CAR's artist's impression reveals how the rawest M3 of all was scheduled to look - with an arrival date of summer 2009.

The M3 CSL was supposed to have power uprated to between 450bhp and 470bhp with a corresponding drop in weight, down by 100kg thanks to wider use of flyweight materials. Cup tyres, new engine breathing and a carbonfibre airbox were due to complete the makeover.

But the bean counters at Munich have now canned the project, so they can concentrate on the faster versions of the company's X-badged crossovers.

    The M boss speaks

Ludwig Willisch, the new M Division boss, said: 'Based on current numbers, there is most likely insufficient demand for the M3 CSL.'

Re: BMW 'cancels E92 M3 CSL'

Keeping the E46 for a few more years then AUM?

    Maybe a GT3....

Re: BMW 'cancels E92 M3 CSL'

Sure is not a mass market product but thats a shame, there is a lot of people waiting for that version of the M3, a lot of them happy E36-M3CSL customers.

Re: BMW 'cancels E92 M3 CSL'

Not surprised at all. The new M3 has been well received by the press, but a weak seller at the dealership.

From what I'm hearing a lot of M3 "fans" are actually sidelining because the M was getting too soft and sedan-like, there are suitable alternatives (finally), Porsche prices have come down, and then there's the little thing of the GT-R.

If BMW really wanted to make a statement, they should come with a balls out version with fender flares and deep chin spolier, wing, and all like the orginal E30!

They need to offer proper BMW performance parts for the car. With monoblock brakes and better suspension, the car would become much more hardcore and the simple addition of a headerback exhaust and a proper intake system, the car approaches 470 horsepower.

Re: BMW 'cancels E92 M3 CSL'

Remember all those years when people claimed they were making an M6 CSL?

Re: BMW 'cancels E92 M3 CSL'

    Another funny story from Heist.

Ok, so I'm still pissed BMW jerked us American's with the E36 M3. It left a very bad taste in my mouth because I know as Americans, we always get screwed out of the cool European options and gadgets but this one here - this was a complete f*cking bait and switch to me.

Here we are thinking we were getting a real M3, when in reality we were getting a bored and stroked 328i motor(!) making 240+hp and a different, softer (crapier - but still better than US Domestic) suspenion ... meanwhile the rest of the world got the REAL M3 engine making 320hp(!) and suspension package that made the car keep up with the best sports cars and sport sedans of the day.

So, I had urged my very hot tempered and spoiled friend at that time to get an M3. Bear in mind, this is before I knew of BMW's great bait-n-switch. I went on and on about how great the car was, the power, the refinment, the handling, it being the pinnacle of BMW and all sport sedans. He was considering a used Porsche, but I told him this was the far better choice.

A week later he goes and gets a Bananna Yellow one with the "Vader" seats - bang - puts down half in cash and drives it off the lot that day.

He's in absolute heaven for the first 2-3 months but tells me he only wishes it had a little more power and the suspension was firmer. (Uh oh!!!) I break the news to him - I tell him the car he thought he bought wasn't really the car I told him about. I told him BMW pulled a switch-a-roo for the American version.

He flips out and drives to the dealer. He nearly killed the sales guy screaming and carrying on ... He just didn't grasp (or want to grasp) the concept that BMW made a different M3's for the U.S. market but convientently didn't tell consumers.

He threw the keys at the guy and said he sold him a rebadged and "kitted out" 328! He DEMANDED BMW or the dealer import him a REAL M3 and threatens to sue everyone and their mother. They had to call the cops ... no joke. It was hilarious.

Re: BMW 'cancels E92 M3 CSL'

Is he still your friend today?

Re: BMW 'cancels E92 M3 CSL'

^^^Negative. This happened back in my late teen, his mid-20's.

He's one of those guys that's cool to pal around with when you're younger but now in his 40's - I'm dissapointed that he's perptually stuck mentally and socially in his late-20's. His life still revolves around working out, going clubbing, chasing skirts, getting drunk and playing with his toys (Cars, boats, motorcycles) ... not that that's bad, but he goes it all in a way that screams, "I'm trying to hold onto my 20-30's." Real tacky and classless which to me is not cool.

I don't like people like that in my circle.

BMW recently announced the 'Competition Package' version of the M6, so I suspect they will do the same with the M3.

I am not surprised they have cold feet; here in the UK the depreciation on E92 M3s has been epic and dealers just aren't managing to sell to their new car targets, so until the market picks up it would be easier for BMW to just offer an upgrade package rather than a proper light-wieght sports version.

It's a shame, but at least I've still got my M3 CSL.

Re: BMW 'cancels E92 M3 CSL'

^^^Right now, that's probably the last true great M3 CSL.

I agree. After owning three M3s' and a 997 Carrera S, I was waiting for this CSL. I had driven my friend's E46 CSL a year ago and I fell in love with the car; noise, buckets, interior, tranny, handling and the FEELING.

Now maybe BMW would release something more focus with BMW performance development; maybe some interior parts and race buckets.

There goes your dream:)What now? Back to TTS or you have something different planned. Why don't you find a clean late E46 M3 and we turn it into a CSL of your own. It is a long project but while your are doing that I may get the courage to find a E30 M3 and return it to its original condition at least

    Kerem,

I ordered my TTS; it will be my car for the next 1-1,5 year.
I'll decide later when the time comes.
    Maybe FL 997 TT or maybe E92 M3; I can't say now.
All I know i that I won't be buying a second hand M3 and I'll drive this TTS for the next year.
I also don't like restore cars. Actually I love to drive them; don't like to spend time to fix them.

Re: BMW 'cancels E92 M3 CSL'

I came across with this page that I find very interesting from an enthusiast point of view.
Someone has made a sign up page to protest BMW's desicion on "Canceling the production of E92 M3 CSL":
    http://www.petitiononline.com/m3csl/petition-sign.html?

Make sense?? I don't know; but I have already signed it

Re: BMW 'cancels E92 M3 CSL'

So the E46 M3 CSL is now a classic.

Re: BMW 'cancels E92 M3 CSL'

What a pity. I got the impression that plenty of people were deliberately not buying the new M3 just so that they could buy the imminent M3 CSL. I'm surprised that BMW developed cold feet. They have such a wide range of cars for sale - plenty they could sacrifice to make room for a M3 CSL. How about scrapping the hideous 1 series coupe or the truly unworthy X3?

It's sad that BMW, despite being in F1, is adopting such a soft, mass-market approach to its cars. The "ultimate driving machine"? I think not.

I agree about the X3, but the 1 series coupe is a fine drivers car, 123d for accountants and 135i for normal people. I even quite like the styling of the 1 series coupe, but very colour sensitive. Looks great in white, IMO.

If BMW binned all the cars that didn't look quite right there wouldn't be any cars in the range.
