    Those R8 brakes must work pretty well - spotted a white R8 (with IN numberplates) last Saturday on Nordschleife. The guy was doing lap after lap after lap after... (and he was not just cruising around) - obviously no probs with the brakes

    Something I forgot to mention is that, in spite of the R8 huge engine and thirst for fuel, the S PDK is 0.6secs faster to 200km/h.

    IMO R8 and Carrera should not be mentioned in the same breath.

    Carrera doesn't want to play the supercar. It is an excellent sports car for the real world that as it happens often outperforms more expensive and on paper more technically superior cars.

    The R8 is an attempt to the supercar class. It is a good first attempt to build a halo car in order to lift the Audi range of cars which are high on quality but low on charisma.

    However, if somebody wants a flamboyant, two seater, mid-engined supercar why not buy the real thing i.e. Ferrari (or even Lamborghini) and save any debates or arguments.

    Well consider price, you're going to pay an extra $100k for a Ferrari or Lamborghini, and more service costs to drive a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Then there's the matter of looks. R8 looks much better than the weird looking cars Ferrari has been producing lately.

    There is no denying that the R8 has a certain sex-appeal that makes car folks look, at a comfort in driving that is probably not there in the Lambo or Ferrari ... at, as said, a much more affordable price.

    Im sorry but that is ridiculous,the R8 costs similar to a specced up C4S here in the Uk,it is equally as useable.As I said it is horses for courses and a matter of ones taste as to which is the better car,I am a massive Porsche fan but am not bigoted in my attitude to other cars.A ferrari or Gallardo are not useable on a daily basis and both cost fortunes to run,the r8 is like the 997 in that for the tyoe of car it is ..it is very reasonable to run (18 month services,Pounds400-Pounds500 service charges.)It is a direct competitor to the 911 and has won numerous tests against the 997s.The automatic is not nice that is true,but Im a manual (stick shift) guy anyway and the R8 gearchange is a tactile delight.
    When replacing the 997tt I tried the gallardo and 430 but these are cars to be used as weekend cars..the r8 is an everyday sportscar...just like a 911.Try one you will be amazed I assure you.

    My comment was sparked off by what a member wrote relating to the German magazine comparative test of the given cars i.e. R8 S-tronic and Carrera 2S PDK.
    Also the prices related to the cars tested in Germany.

    I am not dismissing the R8 which I've driven and it is excellent and easier to drive than a rear-engined Porsche.
    But I cannot agree that it is a better driving machine and pleasure car than the Carrera.

    I don't like most, the unnecessarily high weight and the much higher consumption.

    Additionally, as a matter of personal taste, I am not attracted to the flamboyant look they tried to give to the R8 which moves the car to the Italian School of "supercars" where an Audi is out if its depth on the emotional level no matter how competent it is on the road. I prefer the Germanic logic in the looks of cars. I wouldn't like an S-class imitating a Maserati 4porte for example.

    Give me the Audi Quattro concept updated for the present times and I would be very tempted.

    Though I have no doubt it is a sublime car to drive, I have been waiting for someone to take issue with the R8's looks.

    I thought I was alone in finding it flamboyant down to its glass engine panel and the contrasting side panels. They evidently charge more for a matching color to blend in the panels.

    I have seen just one up close in Monte Carlo, one in London but interestingly none in the metro New York area. Can't be too many on the road. Never got a chance to drive one either.

    I can't believe there are people they compare an R8 to the Ferrari or the Lambo... Let's compare a Mack truck then to a ferrari or a Lambo... Useless LONG conversations with NO conclusions... Also there are NO AUDIs that are supercars... This is a joke! A bad one anyway...

    Indeed the r8 does not compare for sensation to an 430 or gallardo as I said...it is far too useable like a 911.It is quite intresting to note it has beaten both the 430 and gallardo on many tracks though.

    I think the most fun range is 150-200. Used that range a lot this summer. Over 150 the car changes character completely. It sounds differently. Road noise goes down and wind noise goes up. Sounds like being in an airplane. A soft windy sound. Whooosh. It is also the range where I found the car most impressive. I never had any single car coming even close to accelerating the way I (the 4S) could - from 160. You start at 4/5, slam in #5, ride on 5th up to about 200-210 and then slam in #6. Better than sex.

    So I am interested how the R8 acclerates from 150-200.

    I own a f430 and it is more comfortable than any 911.
