Re: New 991 or special 997mk2 version?

If this is a mule for the next generation....no....i dont think Porsche would put more in to a 998 mule.

The 1st protoypes/test cars of the Panamera were in body's of Cayenne's and Audi A8's if i'm not wrong.

Isn't it quite common, that the very first test mules are done in the body of the current or even an older model?

Re: New 991 or special 997mk2 version?

Could be a special aerokit with wider body????

thanks Admin for the Official name of this Topic

Re: New 991 or special 997mk2 version?

I doubt if it is an additional model in the 997.2 range.

Most probably a test vehicle for components/systems for the next version of the 911. Even the wider track of this car could be experimental and not something definite for the future model.

Re: New 991 or special 997mk2 on July 16, 08

I do think it is the 998 because the platform is the same configuartion, and there is no need yet to put on top the new body. You can still use the old body at this stage. My only concern is that the car will be bigger while I allready think the actual 911 is big enough.

Too early to draw conclusions, but at least the track width seem to be bigger compared to the current generation

Re: New 991 or special 997mk2 on July 16, 08

is this now already the official start for a "Some Pictures of the Facelift" kinda Thread, with over 2000 posts?

I was sure the specutlations will start sometime. But so early? The FL didnt even hit the streets.

It's now about what you eyes see, it's what's underneath that counts. Early tests of a new car is always conducted using the body shell of an existing car. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Ferrari and everyone else does this as well. This is always done for the very early maiden test when the manufacturer just want to test different configuration of chassis, gearbox, exhaust system suspensions and engine. We'll see 998 test mules with the real body shell at the earliest during the second half of 2009.

Hey Mate they are just testing the chassis of the 998 and not the finished product. It seesm the new 998/991 would be a bit wider than the 997. Going back to the size of the 996..996 is bigger than the 997.

It looks like they are testing the wider engine bay needed for the new 4.2l flat 8 powerplant.

Re: New 991 or special 997mk2 version?

Funny thing is, when they hadn't taped up the headlights, used the old 997 body, everybody would have thought that it was some dude with an ugly bodykit... Conclusion: Porsche WANTS us to see these factory cars...

Some dudes with ugly bodykits don't drive around Nordschleife on test days (track closed to the public)
These days it's simply not possible to drive around NoS without getting spotted by some spy photographers.

Re: New 991 or special 997mk2 version?

ok, now that this is a sticky post, I can already see a 70pages thread about the 991 model, just like the 997.2 thread !!!!

I love those wheels, also they will be pretty easy to clean !!!

Ahh, didn't know that it was on a closed day.
And yes, those wheels are nice. Makes you wonder though; why would they show a new wheel design so early? (if it really is a new porsche wheel)

More picture of our beloved pre-mature 998.

Re: New 991 or special 997mk2 version?

Can somebody see what is happening with the directional (I mean that little light in the front wheelarch)? If it flows with the line of the exended fender, it might tell us something about whether this is a definitive shape or just some camo. It struck me that the panel gap in the rear quarter pane is also present in the flared fender, thus suggesting that it is a shape that will be definitive?

I personally hope that the 991(998) will have the stance of the 993 but as far as the test mules goes it tells us nothing about the final testing at all, so there's no point in reading to much into it. After all, it's a 997 body shell housing 991 mechanics.

Re: New 991 or special 997mk2 version?

    Thanks Ron!
I am not yet convinced that this is a 991 mule. I stillcan't part with the idea that this might after all be a 997. The pic of the little light does not reveal too much though... guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Re: New 991 or special 997mk2 version?

Who knows if its another 997.2 version or a 991 on a 997 body, the camo does not point to anything in particular, could be either, but what we can see its that whatever it is, its a base version of either and not GT3 or RS because those brakes are very small (base carrera o boxster size), there is no middle radiator, and the exhausts exit on the sides.
Also the wider wheel arches look like camo add ons to throw people off because the wheels them selves don't look like they are set wider apart needing and filling those wider wheel arches.

So my guess its a 991 carerra mule in very early testing using the 997 shell.

    I agree.

I bet the exterior design for 991 is still on the board and papers.

Not by any chance at all. When a new car is launched they get working on visions for the next car right away. The 991 is 3-4 years away and by this stage everything is pretty much finalized and prototypes using the shell of an existing car start start rolling out on the roads. 2 years before unveiling is due the production ready models enter the road heavily covered. 1-5 to 1 year before the car i uncovered the car is 100% finalized and is heavily tested in real life situation and scanned for imperfections.

A full sized model of the 991 has already been presented to the CEOs and been given green light. The 911 is Porsche's most important product and obviously the development of a new model is taken very serious to make sure the car is the best it would be.
