Strange question Conrad but in essence the 3.6l V6 in the Cayenne is actually a VW engine which has seen action in a large number of applications from Golfs thru Passats and Touaregs, whereas the 3.6l boxer 6 in the 997 is a Porsche developed sports car engine used only in the 911 and a totally different animal. Your question is somewhat like asking which is nicer, an apple or a peach. They're both round fruit of roughly the same size but completely different at the same time.

The 3.6 lt carrera is the most reliable and well built. Don't forget that GT3's engine is a tuned 3.6 lt engine from a regular carrera. THAT means something.

The GT3/GT2/Turbo engines are totally different from the Carrera 3.4/3.6/3.8, Boxster 2.7/3.2/3.4 and Cayman engines.
To be put in a very general way the GT3 engine is a watercooled engine based on the older air-cooled one. It also has similarities with the GT1 engines that competed in sportscar racing in the 90s and won LeMans 1998.
The other watercooled engines are of a newer design (not without its problems) introduced with the Boxster 2.5.

Thanks guys, it is in fact a strange question but i was just thinking which engine Porsche will be putting into the upcoming Roxster. Will they possibly put the cayenne's V6 since it's also an off-roader. But maybe most probably they'll put the 3.4 engine of the Boxster/Cayman S...
