Interesting! I would say that the advantage of the DCT is probably (nearly) entirely due to the extra gear ratio (and the resulting closer ratios) and not the new technology. I'd like to see a comparison with a 7spd manual (if that's possible)...

I think with a turbocharged car, the DCT will show a technological advantage, since one never needs to take his foot from the throttle, reducing the turbo lag on upshifts...

Obviously, the reduced fuel usage is also due to the new taller top (7th) gear...

Re: BMW M3 manual vs M-DKG Autobild

    Grant,
I fully agree with you. Just to add that article praises M-DKG very much calling manual "a part of the history". Personally, I am not that sure about it...
I drove M-DKG(also press M3) and it is good(this DSG is pretty similar to GT-Rs is overall feel) but, I would not call it the best or something else...

Difference in lap time is marginal as well. So, just 0.3s with same driver. Average driver will still be slower on the track with M-DKG then excellent driver with manual. Of course, that is just my opinion.

Last thing-IMHO BMW offers way too many settings option for M-DKG(11 in total!). D mode gearchanges are smooth till D3 setting, in manual S mode also till S3. With S4 for example you can feel the gearchages already. Funny thing by looking at revs it seems that difference is speed between say it S3 and S5 is almost NONE! It feels more like some kind of surge that BMW put into S5/S6 modes deliberately... I could be wrong of course. Just in S6 you got SMGIII jerkiness...

Re: BMW M3 manual vs M-DKG Autobild

I was expecting a bigger time gap around the track.

thanks for the news. I was worried the DCT was going to be too smooth. Thank god the kept the jerkiness in fastest settings.

It's very difficult to assess the contribution of the DCT on a racetrack. Although lower/closer gearing always helps in a drag race, gearing changes on a road course are hard to analyze.

It is possible that the 6spd matches more of the corners of this particular track better than the 7spd (i.e. 2nd gear in the 7spd may be too short and 3rd too tall), but maybe it's perfect in the 6spd where 2nd will be a bit taller.

The only way to assess DCT properly is where DCT and the manual have identical ratios.

Kreso, one lap is not enough to distinguish the technological superiority of the DKG vs, manual. Several laps the the margin will be greater. A run on the Ring will also demonstrate a fairly large margin.

Also, I would argue that DKG would make an average driver faster and or as fast as an excellent manual driver around a track. Once Porsche introduces its version, the manual will not only become part of history it will be history.

In the US I would expect 997/S sales to be 90%+ PDK...

Manual will be relegated to GT3, for now

Re: BMW M3 manual vs M-DKG Autobild

I agree with you. I will also add that +90% of M-DKG/PDK/DSG buyers will NEVER use manual paddle shift mode IMHO...

One additonal advantage of the DKG in the M3: the manual M3 gear-box simply does not feel top-quality. I did not like the rather poor interaction between throttle and gear-box in particular. The car feels like stalling during certain gear changes at lower speeds (better in sports mode, bad in normal mode). Also, the M3 gear-box and transmission lacks the stiffness and quality of the 997 gear-box. Thus, I rather prefer DKG in the M3.
