    The first Porsche

    Hey guys,

had the chance to test drive an early 60s 912! OMG what a solid machine. the sitting position is epic, the solid doors and everything.. it's a tank! the dash dail cluster is amazing, it was green. The steering wheel huge and everything is exposed... you can see the whole clutch system.. finally the two humps that house the lights are really big from the inside.

For the drive itself, its something special thats for sure.
OH my what a sound coming out of that engine! so responcive and exciting... damn they really had it back then.

    Im in love

ps. i was he work so don't mind the work clothes

    Re: The first Porsche

Sounds cool. Do you have pictures of the overall car?

Those cars have been very responsive indeed. With their low Horsepower they have been so agile.

Yesss... those cars are classy. But - the performance dynamic changed a lot since then.

    Re: The first Porsche

this one had the 1.6L from the 365 1600cc producing 65hp

    Re: The first Porsche

The 912 had 90hp. The big advantage was its lower weight behind the rear axle. An enthusiast I know stated that back then he experienced comparatively less oversteer in corners than his own 911 when driven hard.

Last time I met him he was driving his 930 Turbo after retiring from business.

    Re: The first Porsche

oh 90hp? that's a little better.. im thinking about restoring a 912 now I absolutely love this car with its pre history looks... it has so much character and presence...

there is an 1968 912 for sale in my area that's a wrecker. it mentioned the 1.6L producing 65hp.. BUT important is all numbers are correct, chrome in tact, glass works, RS duck teal... has 944 coockie cutter rims, and 944 leather seats (comfy).. needs a 2.0L engine, new tranny, floor boards and rocker panels and a re-paint!!!!

    wish me luck

    Re: The first Porsche

From 1965 through 1969, Porsche's 912 eased the transition between the 356 and the 911. In early April 1965 the Porsche factory announced the 912, with the same great aerodynamics, ergonomics, style, and quality of construction as a six-cylinder 911. Fans of the 356 appreciated the 912's proven 356-based flat four-cylinder fuel-efficient motor delivering 64 SAE horsepower/ liter from its location behind the rear axle . With the flat-four, an early 912 weighs about 250 pounds less than a standard 911 of the same year, resulting in improved front-rear weight distribution. And the combination of fuel-efficiency, low-weight, and low-drag translated the 912 into a "green" low-fuel consumption vehicle capable of up to 30 MPG highway, decades before hybrid cars. - From : History of the Porsche 912

    Re: The first Porsche

    Aaron,
If I may ask, what would a car like that go for?
    -Joost-

    Re: The first Porsche

I think around $4500 in their day.

the one im considering buying is $3000... it's for sale locally and im considering it. here are some pics if you're interested as to what it looks like. As i mentioned it will need a new engine, tranny, possibly also whole new interior. Missing floor boards (expect body rust) and rockerpanels. BUT the good is the windows and the whole chassis is numbered correctly (meaning its all origional still!)
The thing about it is though, that i have all the time in the world to restore and rebuilt this buity! I'm planning two summer while im working (12 months) but depends on the availability of parts and such.. it could take a lot longer.. but it all depends on the money i put in too..

That being said, nice maintained 912s go for $10,000 to $14,000 on ebay.. but i doubt i'll get any money out of my project, that is if i ever sell it anyways. It's going to be a challenge and more of a hobby!

right on! it was listed at $4,700 US

    Re: The first Porsche

    This is the plan!

    Re: The first Porsche

The 912 had 90hp, both in their 60ies and 70ies (US specific) iterations. Could be wrong but would yet have to find a different spec. Please take a look here.

I hope you are realistic reg. your restoring intentions. They never resist to get far bigger than initially intended. If you have the time, energy and... funds to do it than go for it. Have never restored a 911/912 but am under the impression that they might be quite delicate in the details so be sure to have an experienced mechanic at your side.

I intend to keep it OEM as hard as those parts are to come across these days.. because it is the very reason im thinking about this project in the first place!

Got a very frienly porsche mechanic but he's $$$$$$$ and some more $. But i know i can't do everything myself unfortunately

    Re: The first Porsche

    Thats gonna look awesome buddy

    Re: The first Porsche

Looks like Porsche was even lying about the weight of its cars 40+ years ago

    Re: The first Porsche

I think that was the first Porsche..
