Where Is And Please Explain Black Box

What about our "drive data recorder" that's supposedly in our cars?

If I get into a bad accident that might be my fault, should I rip this box from the car and hide it before the car gets towed away?

Where is it and what should we do if the worst happens?

Re: Where Is And Please Explain Black Box

It's usually located under the drivers seat.

It stores data, such as speed, airbag deployment, brake activation, engagement of ESP, ABS, etc.

If you get into a bad accident, you will be in no condition to remove this data logger.....

Re: Where Is And Please Explain Black Box

Are you sure the black box really keeps a recent history other than the OBDII codes? I know my friend bought a little gizmo that plugged into the OBDII connector. It kept a running history of all recent driving by monitoring the black box. He used it to monitor his daughter's driving. When she returned home, he'd unplug the gizmo and download the history into his PC.

One day the car, a Toyota I think, wouldn't start. The dealer kept it a couple of days and finally diagnosed a faulty computer. They discovered the gizmo and refused to replace the computer under warranty. Something about the gizmo being an unapproved device. In any case, it takes a separate device to monitor and store a history of your driving habits --at least for Toyotas.

Re: Where Is And Please Explain Black Box

If I'm not mistaken, most "black boxes" -- at least those on American cars -- store only the last few seconds of data just before an air bag deployment event (crash) or near-deployment event (what it perceives as a near crash). Things like velocity delta, seat belt status, engine speed, vehicle speed, brake activation, passenger air bag supression status, air bag warning light activation, etc. during the last five seconds or so are recorded and can't be overwritten or erased from the box's memory if the air bag actually deploys. That's the reason the box is replaced and not reset after a crash involving the air bags. I have no idea about how or what the boxes in P-cars record -- I would be surprised to find that it was any thing less than the above though.

UGH! Can you imagine doing something fun/stupid and you wound up in a ditch?

Insurance company would disown you and cops could charge you if they wanted based on getting hold of that box!

Re: Where Is And Please Explain Black Box

Well, I think we are talking two different things here. As I understand it, there is a unit that stores all kind of freaky things, like overrevs, and stores them. All of them. (I heard people getting into trouble because they abused the engine, and porsche didn't want to replace it under warranty because they found out through this unit). But is this the same as a unit that stores all the data regardign speed, braking, etc in case of an accident?
I heard rumors about cops or so trying to get hold of such a black box in case of accidents, but don't know if they were fears or true stories.

Does anyone know for sure that there is a separate "data recorder" in the cars...or are you talking about the DME/ECU?

Re: Where Is And Please Explain Black Box

Pre-accident info is supposedly stored somewhere. Controversy as to who "owns" the info, cops or driver, if accident is bad.

Re: Where Is And Please Explain Black Box

I vaguely remember seeing a TV show in which cops were being trained on how to use a device (by the manufacturer, that sells the device to police) that gathers such data from whatever onboard information storage systems are on the car and - using internal algorithms - calculates whether or not one was "driving dangerously." Truly scary stuff - Big Brother is Here!!

Yep, two different things I think. I am not referring to the unit that stores the "freaky" things. I am referring to the air bag sensing/diagnostic module -- it's different. As MMD mentioned, there's been some controversy over whether the vehicle owner or the manufaturer owns the info. In any event, the data is oftentimes used to study the types and causes of accidents with the hope of preventing some 'em.

    Change the goverment!

Welcome to the land of Big Brother - your life is monitored by security cameras, your bank account scanned for illegal transfers to foreign lands, and your calls monitored for potential tirrowryst activity.

You have far greater loss of civil liberties to worry about than 5 seconds worth of pre-crash activity...
