Test drove the R8 this weekend

Had a test drive in a white R8 with carbon side blades this weekend. It was a manual and had all the options except for the CCB's.

Upon entering the car the cockpit was very roomy. The seats were extremely comfortable, the buttons and dial were easily within reach on the center console. Visibility in general was all very good.

The clutch was also vastly improved compared to my old RS4 - it was much lighter and responded better. The gearbox at first glance immediately reminded me of a Lambo or Ferrari and the "stencil" was a lovely sight to see in an Audi.

The gearbox is really smooth and I love the sound it makes upon every shift, like a gun reloading I didn't really like the rough strips for grip on the gear knob, but that is just personal preference.

The steering is very light and the response from the engine is also very sharp. It's amazing that is can feel so much faster than my old RS4 although it shares the same engine. Maybe it is placebo effect it has of being much lower.

Around the turns the car feels very planted and I absolutely love the magnetic suspension. The car has almost no body roll! Only downside is the exhaust note, it is far too soft (although I realise Audi designed this as an everyday GT). That can easily be remedied by something aftermarket.

In general I would give the car a 8/10 and left me with a great experience! I can't wait until the V10 version comes out, sign me up

Re: Test drove the R8 this weekend

Great news Mike So the R8 V10 is joining your collection too

Re: Test drove the R8 this weekend

From what I'm reading the clackety - clink of the gear shift is a love it or hate it affair after a long drive.

And I really like this car, but something about the deep grumble of a big displacement V8 just doesn't match the character of the car to me. I want to hear something a little more ripsaw - shriek'ish.

Re: Test drove the R8 this weekend

I've always said that the R8 was a beautiful carto drive, V10 will surely be awesome. So Mike what colour are you getting

    Mike,

I am glad that you liked R8.
Manual is the way to go since R-Tronic is not really SOTA...

Optional Ceramic brakes are even better then pretty good standard brakes.

Regarding exhaust note-it is pretty civilised from the inside but, it sounds way better from the outside. Audi wanted that effect...

So, you will order R8 V10. Great choice...

I'm sure it will sound better from the outside. It is like my LP640 - from the inside is sounds awesome, heard nothing like it, but from the outside

I hope the price range will be somewhere around SL55 territory. It will sell really good!

Re: Test drove the R8 this weekend

    Hi Mike,

funny, my R8 is now on the dealer to apply some "software" upgrades and for checking, and they gave me ...a RS4 as courtesy car, so I can now compare : for me, the clutch of the RS4 is smoother, as the gearbox, but the steering of the R8 is far much better, and as you said, the speed feeling is greater in the R8. And for the sound, nothing inside the car ...
Will post some pictures of the RS4, nice grey rims
I am on the list to try the V10 series...

Maybe my memory is hazy, but I had such hassles with my clutch!

Re: Test drove the R8 this weekend

Hey Mike, not tempted to get the GT-R?

R8 exhaust note is easily fixed. Simply disconnect the exhaust valve vacuum line under the right hand wheel arch. Massive difference, it will scare the crap out of your neighbours!
