    DME HELP !!!

    Guys,

    Would appreciate your experience and assistance.

    I live in Israel and have just imported a new black MY2008 C4S (including X51) from NY. (5 mls).

    Got it yesterday, after 14 days travel on a vessel.

    The battery was completely drained so the car was towed to a workshop for some after-market installations (V1, TOOKI, etc).

    The guy charged the battery for few hours and than tried starting the enginer.
    It cranks but wont start !!!

    Connected to PIWIS. Got tones of errors but the most alarming thing was that the system didn't find the DME sub-system. Checked all fuses. All fine.

    Any idea what is going on ????

    Normally a new battery shouldn't drain in 14 days. But if the car has not been used before those 14 days e.g. while it was travelling from Stuttgart to New York (including a long journey over the Atlantic Ocean by ship) plus the 14 days (to travel from NY to Israel), this must be responsible for the drained battery. Unfortunately, I think they don't disconnect the battery so that they can just drive it off the boat.

    Is the guy who connected the PIWIS terminal a Porsche technician in a Porsche dealership? If he is, what did he say is the reason? If not, you should go to an official Porsche dealer.

    Hope you manage to solve this. Sorry I couldn't help more but try not to worry. An official dealer will be able to solve it for you.

    BTW, is it okay to export brand new US cars out of the country? I thought there were restrictions on this because US prices are so low. I ask only because I don't know what the warranty on a US car is. Is the US warranty global or restricted to North America?

    Remember also that the US warranty is 4 years whereas the rest of the World only gets 2 years warranty. But is the warranty 4 years in the US only if the car remains in the US?

    The guy was not an official Porsche technician. I will take the car to the dealership next week. As for warranty, the car is still under the US warranty that will apply fro 4 years. I am quite worried. Might be that the DME/ECU is dead ??? how can that happen on a brand new car ???

    OK. Try to relax and stay calm. The dealer will solve the problem and then you can get down to enjoying your new car. You are going to love it

    What I heard is no warranty; not transferable from USA cars, that's what I got chatting away with my sales guy (who's wrong?).

    I heard you can't buy a new car in Isreel unless it comes with a spare. Importing from USA is a lot of work to get around that rule.

    warranty is fine. the car isnt ... can ECU be dead on arrival ???

    How exactly did they ship it? Lots of sea air isn't good. There're microfine salt crystals in it. Are there specialized precautions/preparations involved for these cars that your shipper had no idea of?

    I expect it was air freighted from NY to Tel Aviv via some European airport perhaps? I can't believe it would take only 14 days to ship it by sea (inc clearing customs etc)

    it went through see (13 days) and than took a day to release. was well protected in a sealed container

    Was the workshop able to open the trunk to get to the battery or was the battery charged via the fuse box or a 12V socket inside the car?
    If you cannot open the trunk (or the car) with the key's remote control or with the button next to the driver's seat the car still thinks that it is locked and the immobilizer system is active and you can't start the car. That is a common problem after a dead battery. There is a tricky sequence of actions necessary to fix that. It is so tricky that it is wrong in my '05 owner's manual. Hopefully, they have corrected the manuals in later model years. From my memory the correct sequence is something like that:
    1. open door with key manually
    2. lock door manually but keep door open
    3. connect auxiliary battery to fuse box (immobilizer wakes up and still thinks that the door is locked)
    4. pull door handle
    5. unlock open door manually
    6. unlock trunk with button or key (remote control should work now) to get to the dead battery
    If you have charged the battery via the fuse box or a 12V socket without doing step 2 you might have a problem now. I don't know if it is possible to fix that without draining the battery again.

    Yes, of course. IMO it would be best to take it a trained Porsche technician with lists of all the stored codes, the latest 997 TSBs and a direct line to Porsche service manuals to figure out what's wrong and exactly what to do. I wouldn't let anybody with fewer resources mess around with it if I had a choice. I doubt it's something as simple as a broken solder joint but you can check it anyway.

    took the car to the dealership today. they are still inverstigating but it seems that there is no current for the fuel pump. will no better tommorow. can it be the fuel pump relay ??? for a brand new car ??? strange

    Great news. problem solved . they replaced the fuel pump relay. All is working ... amazing car
