    congrats Francois, fantastic car!!!

    Re: Carrera GT

oh my look at that first pic.. best car ever made!

im so jealous of you haha, but you'll share pics and such..

    Re: Carrera GT

    Congrats!

I'd do the hydraulic suspension upgrade from RUF just to avoid the horrific scraping sound.

    Thank you!

Waoh guys, thanks for the kind words!

Ok, more pics then and the whole story, here goes:

Sept 2000: I see the Proto at the Paris auto show of the 980 and like many of us, I am stunned and instantly it becomes my dream car.

Almost 8 years later, a few 980s are available on the 2nd hand market but still expensive.

Then I call Porsche Reading out of interest and they tell me they are currently repairing 1198 and its owner is a seller.

In three days it's a done deal. Price is within what we find in the UK but like EasyRider pointed out, in Euros, it's a very good deal indeed, thanks to a Sterling sitting at an all time low.

The owner had a minor crash with it, slow speed, only body panels and the front left radiator are concerned, Porsche Reading know 1198 since its birth, the car is clean and it will be as new when repaired within a few days, along with a brand new clutch.

I went to Reading last Friday to check it out in details. It is the only Porsche centre in the UK CGT approved so these guys know the car very well. It couldn't be repaired and prepared at a better place. The welcome was outstanding, super service by passionate guys.

Here are a few pics taken that day. The car was "naked" which was a fantastic opportunity to observe the level of engineering gone into the 980. It's all made of carbon, magnesium, aluminum and materials you only find in the outer universe.

They fired it up for the 1st time since the repair in front of me. The noise is spectacular. Think modern F1 a bit muted. Splendid!

Quid of the 599? Well, I will decide after a couple of trips with 980 so assess its usability.

    Cheers!
    F.

    Re: Thank you!

I have checked a lot the issue of ground clearance. It should be fine, at 86mm, it's actually higher than my RS. And ze germans, as practical as ever, have fitted the front spoiler with a consumable hard plastic lip.
The longer wheelbase will be an issue though, we'll see.
I have checked the hydraulic suspension by Ruf, but no, I want my car to remain 100% factory setting and it will add weight and electronics etc.
There is no extended warranty for the car but Porsche AG operates a good will policy with serious costumers.

Anyway, in the previous picture, you can see the underfloor is carbon fiber, solid material, won't mind a scratch or two...

    Re: Thank you!

Next, check out the main carbon tub! Impressive!

    Re: Thank you!

    awesome

    Re: Thank you!

This is some serious stuff Francois!

Let me know me know when you are in London over the weekend, I would love to see it once is ready

    Re: Thank you!

    Brand new left door.

    Re: Thank you!

Front underfloor with the 1st layer of carbon taken off.

    Re: Thank you!

Back of the car, again with the 1st carbon protection removed. The middle hole is the one through which you can check the wear rate of the carbon ceramic clutch.

    Re: Thank you!

Engine bay, made from, guess what... Carbon. Bolted on the main carbon tub that contains the cockpit.

    Re: Thank you!

Gear lever in carbon. I always liked the historic reference to the 917 with the wooden standard one but I must admit, carbon looks very nice!

    Re: Thank you!

Carbon steering wheel. In the previous pic, one can see the light grey stitching, very nice too.
This is a UK car, 1198 will be UK reg and spend the sunny days between GB and Europe.
Digital speedo can be changed to kmh so no problem.
The becker online pro unit has sat nav, CD changer, MMC card slot so no immediate need for an iPod and the stereo is Bose.

    Re: Thank you!

Checked the brake pads wear. Plenty left!

    Re: Thank you!

Last picture, this one from the previous owner.
    Car is flat black.
Initially, I really liked the standard GT silver with brown int. But black is sexy and aggressive!
Since I have the RS in flat black, I prefer it to basalt black too. Provided the car is cleaned regularly, the backness is much deeper and well, much better IMO!
Someone asked me about the rear lights, they are standard red LED.

    Re: Thank you!

Superb Futch I am v v happy for you

You made me look at the used car locators on various sites. Apparently there are 5 CGTs in the USA and 2 in Germany for sale. But that's about it. Prices are steep though!

Made me also look at 997 GT3 prices. Amazing. A new 997 GT3 used to cost something like Pounds74k in the UK. Now a used one with 5000miles on it is selling for about Pounds95k. It's actually gone up in price by Pounds21k. Crazy!

996TTS is selling for Pounds67k whereas 997TT is selling for around Pounds87k.

The moral is IMO that one should buy Porsches built in limited production numbers. It seems to guarantee much lower depreciation despite the fact that cars built to the same quality but built in much larger numbers depreciate heavily.

This explains why nberry keeps going on about exclusivity and how his Ferraris keep their value. It's nothing to do with quality in absolute terms but has everything to do with production numbers not keeping pace with desirability.

Anyhow, coming back to you Futch, all I can say is my sincerest and warmest congratulations to you on fulfilling a dream you've held for 8 years. The pleasure you will feel when you drive away from Reading OPC the first time will be a 'champagne moment' for you.

Long may you enjoy good health and prosperity Enjoy your wonderful addition to your impressive garage of cars.

Hopefully you'll let me take a ride as a passenger someday if you pass through Notting Hill again

    Re: Thank you!

    Fantastic piece of art.

Make sure you document everthing with pictures in a book so you can hand it down to your grand kids .

If you're looking for a nice 959 for your stable let me know .

    Re: Thank you!

    Amazing car.
And the garage... WOW!. It's the garage of my dreams!

    Have fun with it

    Re: Thank you!

wow wow wow... Futch (=Fanch, no?)
I,ve got some pictures like this one, if you (or others) want them at high res, let me know.

Operation dream garage pretty much completed
    Carrera S/ GT3RS/ Carrera GT
Will test the usability of the GT as a proper GT car and decide whether or not I tell the Macaronis that they can stuff their two years wait list 599 up where I think... At present the order is still valid, delivery anytime between this summer and December.

    Awesome. Many congrats.!

All you really now need to sincerely complete your garage is-but, of course-a 911 Turbo.

    Re: Carrera GT

    congrats ! real dream car!

    Re: Carrera GT

    Awesome, just awesome.

I would move my bed into the garage if I had a stable like that. The only thing still missing is a historic one, like a 73RS or a 904

Congratulations and best wishes. Happy and safe motoring!

    Re: Carrera GT

    Congrats!

    Re: Carrera GT

    Thanks again guys!

A 911 Turbo? No not really. I've driven it a few times now.
It lacks the immediacy of the NA engines, feels heavy and pretty aloof, I prefer a lot more my Carrera S for road driving.
And on track, well, it doesn't stand a chance against the RS.
Fast car, but not the best of the 911 line up, for me at least.
Next one we'll see. I don't consider myself to be a collector, I like to drive my cars. So 3 is plenty for now.

    Re: Carrera GT

what a fantastic car!!!! Congratulations!!!! Many happy km on it!!!!

    Re: Carrera GT

Yeah, Futch, I think we're all looking forward to reading your report on first impressions and then your view after several thousand Kms...

    Re: Carrera GT

What an amazing view to see the CGT undressed, I knew there was a LOT of carbon involved in creating the CGT, but actually seeing how much is an other story!

As Easy said, the moment you'll drive away from Reading in this car must be a moment you'll never forget..

Knowing the CGT (a bit) and the 599 (a bit more) I would argue that both cars are complementary rather than competing... The 599 could be used as a remarkable daily driver, offers lots of character and emotion and has a very similar straight-line performance as the CGT. The CGT is a true race car and convertible. As such it is outstanding. As a daily driver I don't think it is usable... Also, please keep in mind that the CGT is a very dangerous car to drive...

If I where you I would take the 599 as well - or, alternatively, you could combine the CGT with the GT2! The more I think of it that should be the perfect combination
