Is this the new California or a new smal Maserati?

Is this the new 2+2 or is it a new small Maserati. Look at the engine (pic 2). The top of the engine looks like the Maserati V8. The top of the Ferrari engines are straight, this one not.

These pics were taken at Fiorano at the same time a 612 was testing. This car is about 50cm shorter.

    What do you think?

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

yeah engine does look maserati like... then again the hips and front fender thingy's are very ferrari like lines.

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maserati?

    hmm very interesting !

Last photo is very nice, I hope the price wont be so expensive as an f430

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maserati?

Man, that's what I would call a camouflage!

Beneath the cover of the roof we most probably find a folding hard top. Wheels are from Ferrari, but that has to say nothing. Engine indeed looks like the ones used by Maserati. When were the pics taken?

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

Last week? I found this on www.quattroruote.it

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

It will be sd if they (Ferrari) use to much elements from the 599.
Being that 599 is the top do and pretty exclusive.
And their new little front engined model will sell no matter what it looks like.

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

Me thinks, Ferrari wants to do the Dino but they're brand it Maserati. It's pretty logical since Maserati has no low price point entry level sports car. They have a GT, but Ferrari already has the 599.

It may use a Maserati engine (which is nothing but an old Ferrari engine anyway), styling done by Pinnafarina, chassis tested and tuned by Ferrari, but final assembly in a Maserati factory since Ferrari has no futher capacity.

Price point will be under the entry level F430 and Maserati GranTurismo.

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

So Ferrari will give Maserati a small percentage of each sale?

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

^^^ I don't know how exactly the finances will work out. Not that it particularly matters since both are owned by the FIAT group anyway so the money all flows back to the same source in the end.

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

IMHO, Ferrari might need a small GT to compete with the class dominants as Asto Martin Vantage or even the big Bentley Continental GT!

Hope the money will flow back to F1 team somehow!!

    Best,

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

^^^ You know, I don't think Ferrari (or rather Fiat) wants to go that route. I think they'd rather keep Ferrari as the Ultra Premium brand focused on sports cars or Super GTs, and let Maserati tackle the Premium segment and entry level GTs.

I mean it's not Ferrari is looking to compete against, The Vantage or Conti - that would seem like something more appropiate for a mark like Maserati anyway.

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

Love the artists' interpretation, I'd buy that !

Agree - folding roof! I guess this is the new Dino! The engine looks straight to me!

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

    But is it 2+2?

Could be - it looks like a pretty big car, if you compare to th size of the driver in the first pic. That plus the doors look quite long.

This must be the Dino/California and not GranTurismo-based. Comparing to the Maser, the distance between the front wheels and door is longer, so more of a front mid-engine design.

The fact that the air intake manifold doesn't look like the F430's may indicate that either this has been changed to fit under the hood or maybe it's using a 180 deg crank like the Maser.

180 degree crank in a Ferrari V8? Hard to believe...

I agree - especially if displacement stays at 4.3.

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

AFAIK, the displacement will be 4,7l (some spy vids seem to prove it), 480hp, maybe more.

    Here you go...

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

Hmmm. this looks so ready not photoshopped at all. Anyway - I know its a PS - but amazing!

The car is not that bad. Might be a bit to small, so have to wait to see the first one real!

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

Thought it was meant to have a folding hard top? Anyone heard anything about that?

    Still, this does look nice.....

The folding hardtop is the "surprise" that Ferrari will have when they announce the car later this year.

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

no, you have to click on the artikel, then you will see a pic of the mule (like the one a post before).

Obviously, this should have read "90 deg. crank like the Maser".

Besides the shape of the intake manifold (as noted previously), the sound of the proto at Nurburgring also sounds like a 90 deg. A bit disappointing especially if the displacement stays at 4.3 as suggested in Autoweek article.

BTW, the new throttle body system they mention may be the first application of the FIAT-patented UNI-Air variable lift and throttleless valve actuation system (similar to BMW's Valvetronic system).

Re: Is this the new California or a new smal Maser

Ferrari wont use the uniar or other similar tecnologies , they said zhat when they presented the "Mille chilli"...
The first Uniair /Multiair engine will be the 1.3jtd in 2009. Some say the new ALfa 1.8jtb will have multiair but i think its not possible.

    Cheers, Kenny

You're right, I missed that. Although I also read that Uniair may be applied to Maserati, and this car sounds like it may have a Maserati engine.

I notice that BMW also does not use their Valvetronic on their hi-RPM M5 and M6 engines.
