Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

    Simple Question:

If you previously had a 997 in C2, C4, C2S, C4S form and now have a GT3, what do you miss from the standard 997, apart from rear seats?

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

You could ask sergini, frayed and Trundle this question since they made this change.

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

nothing; I have both a C2 & GT3. 2 different animals altogether. What exactly is your question?

I'd like to anticipate any regrets I'd have if I changed my C4S Cab for a GT3. I am sure the benefits will outweigh the drawbacks but I would like to know them before I make the move.

    I am already aware of:

    1. No rear seats
    2. Firmer suspension (what are longer journeys over 200 miles like)
    3. No PSM
    4. It's not a cab (I figured this one out on my own )
    5. Sport shifter (which I like)

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

Well i would add if i were in you...a lot lower car so a pain in the ass over speed brakers and too steep ramps as i'm discovering these days i've been speaking with few friends of mine who have one a GT3 and the other a GT3RS

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

Miss anything? Nothing. There is nothing you would miss. In fact, my C2S cab feel outright defective in comparison.

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

I don't think the seats are height adjustable.

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

Been lucky to have both at one time. I have to admit the gt3 is not the most comfortable car, however, I do not miss my C2S cab at all. Just a different feel in performance. I guarantee you won't regret it. Just can't drive it in wet weather.

If you are referring to the really, really expensive "new GT3 seats" and the "not so expensive old GT3 seats" then you are right, but there are several aftermarket brackets available which may help.

In North America the stock seats and the sport adaptives are the same in the GT3 and regular 997.

@P-P: I've followed your posts with interest on how you moved from P to F and now back to P again. You're clearly searching for something that's been eluding you so far.

Turning to your question, I think you can list the differences and intellectually rationalise this choice (if you want to) but at the end of the day, it boils down to 2 issues:

    i) which car (GT3 or C2S/C4S) more closely meets your daily needs i.e. what you individually plan to use it for (a slightly different question from what the specification differences might be)

    but more importantly IMO,

ii) which car makes you feel better (see my point about searching for something above).

IMO, there's no doubt that a GT3 will excite you more but it's a trade off between the excitement and the slightly lesser practicality of it.

By contrast, the C2S/C4S will excite you a little less but it involves less compromise.

So how far you compromise really depends on you rather than on the cars themselves.

    Just my 2 cents...

Hope you find what you're looking for

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

BTW, I thought the GT3 comes with a sport shifter as standard...

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

For daily use strictly on public roads the Carrera is the better choice. If it is mainly a fun car (tracking and fast road driving for the sake of it) with occasional trips the GT3 is more exciting both visually and as a driving machine and its styling makes it a bit more special. If you can afford a good daily driver too, get the GT3. Remember that Cup tyres limit wet weather driving a lot.

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

Coming from an '05 C2S to the GT3 what do I miss?
    In a word....nothing!
In a year of ownership I've logged 11,000+ mi and have no regrets!
Have to be a bit more cautious driving due to the limited approach angle but that aside, all is great!
Did get a second set of wheels fitted with PS2's for road driving

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

The only reason why I decided not to go for the GT3 was ground clearance, I wouldn't be able to park the car in my own garage...

Also, I realise that I'm not a good enough driver to really use the extra power and handling the GT3 offers. Maybe I'm even faster in my current C2S with X51.

Nevertheless I keep on dreaming about owning a GT3...

My friend parks his GT3 in the street, with all this entails, because it scrapes the drive to his underground garage. Carreras and Boxsters have had no problems there.

Yes, the quest for the holy grail of the perfect driving machine. It doesn't exist, I know, but I still can't stop looking.

I do miss the F430 and rather like the mid engined lay out.

I've recently replaced my family car with the E92 M3 which is great fun but the rear wheel spins is a reminder of how great the 911 is to have the engine over the rear wheels and the traction it brings. The great thing about the M3 is that I can now go for a drive out with the wife and really enjoy the car at the same time. This frees me up to pick something more hardcore for my fun driver.

I would be happy to keep the C4S cab as it is a great car but I'm always thinking about what's next. I'm considering:

    - GT3 - great drive but questionable looks IMO

    - C2S X51/PCCB/-20mm - Almost a GT3 and far better looking

    - Cayman S - Stunning looks and great handling

    - 360 CS - Light, great sound track, F1 transmission. I think this is the one I'll end up with sooner or later.

    - Gallardo Superleggera - Best looking IMO but from the reviews, probably not the same driver appeal.

    - Audi R8 - Probably not, but awaiting another test drive

Whatever happens, it's all good fun.

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

An interesting discussion and, for me, very topical. It's only 1 month until my very first Porsche, a brand new white C2s with PSE, SS -20mm, Aerokit and sports shifter, is due to be delivered. At the very last moment I get a call from a friend who knows of someone selling his 07 GT3, also white, with just 12,000km on the clock, and at a price I can afford. Dilemma? You bet. Although I can't envisage spending more than a few days a year on track and rain isn't a problem in Dubai, it sounds like a no-brainer.... go for the GT3. But somewhere in the back of my head is a voice saying 'go for the C2s' on the grounds of a new car is better than a second hand one and, as a newbie to Porsche and fast cars for that matter, is a GT3 a realistic option for me? Any thoughts or advice out there?

Id go for the C2S unless you plan to track it fairly often pcdubai. It can get really uncomfortable in dubai in a gt3 when your constantly stuck in traffic, and the road conditions at the moment are just horrible with all those bumps dips and sewage covers poking out .. the stiffer suspension would be a pain I imagine (its already quite stiff for those roads on my C2S). In terms of ground clearance, if your getting the aerokit its the same as the gt3, it WILL scrape, no matter how careful you are. The bottom lip is quite flexible though so its not so fragile at all.

Also, since its your first fast car in general, id say the C2S would be easier and more driver-friendly? Ive never driven a GT3 but ive heard its a bit unforgiving.

Also, judging by the way the traffic laws are changing in Dubai, it will be very silly to own any performance car at all over here!

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

I don't like the clutch in the GT3's in the traffic, my 997 is a joy to drive even in traffic jams! Incidentally, the traffic is much worse in London than Tokyo so I would be even more cautious about a GT3 if I moved back to Central London.

Lastly, I read your review of the M3 Pink Panther. I thought it was just me but two of my friends also didn't like the change from 1st to 2nd on the test drives of the M3. Great car by the way. If I were in your shoes, I think a 997 Turbo Cab would be perfect. My cousin is getting one for his 25th birthday and I will be getting my mits on it soon!

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

997 turbo cab does sound tempting except for

    1. I like a good exhaust noise
    2. I prefer the C2S over the C4S. As the turbo cab is 4wd it lacks a little of the steering feel available from the C2S.

I went for an F430 in the end so I am considering adding a boxster S to the mix or maybe a C2S cab.

The M3 is a fun car but I don't think I will miss it when I next change. I do miss my C2S cab though.

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

"Also, I realise that I'm not a good enough driver to really use the extra power and handling the GT3 offers. Maybe I'm even faster in my current C2S with X51.

Nevertheless I keep on dreaming about owning a GT3... "

This sounds like me. I can't drive my X51 C2S anywhere near its potential but can't get the GT3 out of my head.

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

I own a 2005 Carrera S, a 2005 Boxster S, and a 2007 GT3. The Carrera S is a great car, very civilised, easy to drive, great performance. The GT3 however, is a PURE sports car. This is the way all 911s should be! If I had to choose one I would take tha GT3, and I would certainly take a Boxster S over a carrera cab.

Hey sprinter, thanks for that. Could you highlight the pros and cons between the 911 cab and the boxster, forgetting number of seats, boot space, aesthetics etc - just things related to driving. Specifically, what does the boxster not do as well as the 911 cab?

Re: Q for those who have moved from std 997 to GT3

Paul, other than being $30,000 dollars more expensive, the only thing a Carrera cab does versus a Boxster S is it is faster. The Boxster, due to it's mid engine layout, is a MUCH better handling car and better braking as well. Again, as with the GT3, a true sports car.
