    997 tt / GT2 - end of the line ?

as rc recently discussed the social ramifications of having a nice car that will easily triple most speed limits are not very positive for most people... i personally do not believe there will be 998..999..turbos each sucessively more impressive to ourselves... the greening of society is gaining signifigant traction world wide ... no matter how green these cars actually may be thats not the perception... im remembering the demise of muscle cars and good porsches of late 60s early 70s era... relatively quickly cars vanished from the market or became s_ _t ... because of gas prices !!... theres a lot more in play now than just gas prices ... no pdk, no power kit, no sports exhaust these are calculated business decisions the technology was easily in place to have had these features if total performance was the game plan... i dont think it is any more... porsche hybrids, on the way... porsche diesels, they havent said no... porsche/ lexus panamera on the way ... porsche makes a major business decision with their vw investment... they are behaving in a calculated socially acceptable manner ... after all its only business

hope im wrong , but if i wanted a kick ass porsche id be getting it sooner rather than hoping to get an even better one later

    Re: 997 tt / GT2 - end of the line ?

i also think it will be the last real cars.

    Re: 997 tt / GT2 - end of the line ?

So, I might be owning the last dinosaur from porsche out there? !

I was thinking of selling it because of the faceleft news which dissapointed me !

But people thought the same thing back in the early '70s when oil shipments from the Middle East were disrupted by a war. A 100 km/h (62 mph) speed limit was introduced on German Autobahns.

It was around about the time when the very first 911 Turbo was introduced.

Which just shows it ain't over till it's over.

Do you know when the very first Porsche turbo was introduced to the public...?

In 1973, the year of the first global oil crisis. Does that answer your question

    Re: 997 tt / GT2 - end of the line ?

Well, I guess Audi would disagree by introducing the R8, Nissan the skyline, and Chevy with the Z06. I guess Lexus is also getting into the fray.

If anything it seems as though the high perf. market is growing.

    Re: 997 tt / GT2 - end of the line ?

Don't worry, the next 911 Turbo is definitely coming. And it won't be a hybrid, either. Hybrid technology is only for the Cayenne and the Panamera.

Back in the late 1970s, the SC and Turbo got a power decrease in the US because of emissions, not because of fuel consumption. Believe it or not, in Germany, they were running ads boasting the 911's mpg!

    Re: 997 tt / GT2 - end of the line ?

Porsche is a master marketer - they will find cars that we will actually want in the future, even if they have to be greener than today's cars. Personally I cannot imagine "settling" for less of a performance car or less horsepower, but don't be surprised. If the 997TT/GT2 is the last of a breed, then it's certainly been a nice ride!

    Re: 997 tt / GT2 - end of the line ?

Though i agree with your basic premise, you are assuming that being green conflicts with performance. Most if not all car manufacturers are working on this issue as we speak. Ferrari is pretty much getting out of the HP race and working on hp-weight ratios. There will be less weight, less hp but enhanced performance additions i.e.supercharger or turbo. As a result there will be improvement in perf but without the high burning fuel.

I am certain other companies are working on similar goals.

Maybe get one of those electric two seaters, ones with as-of-yet-undeveloped super massive capacity batteries. Going 0-60 in 2.5 seconds would be _worth_ saying goodbye to Porsches with those super inefficient "reciprocating" (piston) gas engines..

Imagine the best possible (engineered?) sound of a high perf _electric_ engine. Could be really cool. No kidding, maybe the high-perf ones will have a whine/hum that would blow your mind.

Highly doubt it, but who knows.

Check it out!!! Looks fairly good to me right now; in another ten years it could be astounding:

    Re: 997 tt / GT2 - end of the line ?

    Look at the insides:

Imagine what battery weight/capacity will be like in five or ten years.

    Re: 997 tt / GT2 - end of the line ?

The Tesla is old news. The Fetish has been in production for a couple of years now.

Of course, at the original asking price of Euro 525k (since then reduced to only Euro 300k), it remains a very rare sighting.

    Re: 997 tt / GT2 - end of the line ?

I fail to see the problem, a big SUV (escalade etc) may dip into the single digit MPG ratings, but a 997TT hits over 20....?

    Re: 997 tt / GT2 - end of the line ?

Environmentalists are often "watermelon environmentalists": green outside, red inside.

While a Suburban remains a definitely middle class vehicle (lower middle class if used), the 911 will always remain a luxury vehicle (no matter what nberry says ). So it's a popular target.

Also, many people claim they need* 8 seats and 4 ton towing capacity. But very few people take seriously anyone that claims to actually need a 911. So, no matter the actual damage, we get to feel the heat.

    *once a year. YMMV.
