Sorry to say but it does look as if someone crashed into it right at the factory...
What segment and price point is this car going to compete in?
Well, it will be more expensive than the 6 series (which could be obliterated by the 8 series at some point, who knows?!). A doctor friend of mine got a new M6 (he had a M4 before) at a bargain price already, BMW dealers seem to throw them out at huge discounts here in Germany.

Exactly my thoughts. Had to check it twice to realize that there is a bumper installed. Looked like it was missing

Some manufacturers try too hard in the design department, they offer playful designs which may attract a lot of attention at first but get old fast and already look outdated even after a facelift. 
I haven't seen the 8 series yet (other than some camouflaged mules driving around Munich) but I have a hard time seeing a point, considering that there is also the 6 series. Maybe the 8 series is supposed to be the more design-oriented version or bigger or whatever? I don't have a clue.

Talked to my BMW "friend" today, he picked up something at my business. He works for BMW as an engineer.
He said that the new 8 series is supposed to compete with cars like the Porsche 911 and the AMG GT, so it will be sportier and more agile than the 6 series. Interesting, makes sense...kind of.

Believe it or not but I think that in this kind of category (mass commute, whatever), the design actually makes sense (a combination of clown car, racer, city car, design icon, design catastrophe and whatnot). It is supposed to attract attention, positive or negative.

Agree with RC - form follows function. Maybe it makes a lot of sense to look like that. Kind of Porsche design in the next level

I think Lars is referring to Bangle's latest bungle, not the 8 series.
Oops...right...this happens when I work, eat, drink and write, all at the same time.

Of course, the fact that the 911 is gradually becoming larger and more luxury-sports oriented helps BMW do this... they can "meet in the middle".

That doesn't sound right to me if you consider the naming strategy, and having seen a couple of mules on the road, it's clearly a bigger car than a 6-series? It seems to me it's targeting the S-Class Coupé rather than sportscars? Its name suggests the same, no?

This is what I told him as well when I talked to him but he insisted that the 8 series is supposed to compete with the 911 and the AMG GT, not the Mercedes S class Coupe.
We'll see once the car is out in the open, with all the data available. Especially weight is going to be interesting. If this thing weights 1800 kg or more, it cannot really compete with the 911 or AMG GT.

If this is a coupe set on either a 5 series or 7 series chassis (which are both modular to each other from memory) then it will be faced with the same challenge as the M3/4 and M5/6 namely being a sporty version of a sedan car with a sedan car center of gravity. At the end of the day that is what determines sports car or not and a sedan is not a sports car....
