I remember when I was choosing between Basalt or Regular Black, I had the cars side by side in the same outdoor light. The Basalt was a Carrera GT, the Black a 997. I thought the Black was a richer deeper color with definitely more shine and gloss, IMHO. I went with the black.
Black is definitely more reflective that Basalt. That's the "shine" you're referring to. No other color reflects like Black does. That's also why it's the most difficult color to maintain and shows every mark. I just gave up a black suv on lease and currently have another black suv, I've had a black Impala SS, 3 black BMW's since 1997 including a 2002 M5 and a black 996 turbo. 7 black cars in the last 10 years (unless I'm forgetting any) so I'm intimately familiar w/ black not just from dealer lot comparisons. Love the color but it's really worn on me, it's got the greatest reward imo when you're done detailing but also gives you the most heart-ache. On Sunday a friend and I took a motorcycle ride and we were over in Huntington so we stopped at Porsche Huntington, they were closed but had 2 Basalt Cayenne's outside and so far I'm going to keep my order for the Basalt. It's the second most reflective color next to straight black imo so it's not as easy to maintain as Artic lets say but it has a very interesting metallic flake if you get right up on the paint you can actually see gold & blue flakes in the paint, it makes for a very interesting color especially in the sun. In the shade lower on the car Basalt looks very black but where body panels turn towards the sun the metallic is very cool looking. It's definitely interesting. Basalt is normally a $900 option but Porsche offers it as a no-cost option for the Turbo/Cab, this isn't the reason I'm getting it but just worth mentioning imo. My only reservation is the fact I've never owned Basalt or a Metallic black car. It looks really cool on the dealer lot but am I going to love it when I own it? I still have a couple of months to change my mind but so far I'm keeping Basalt.
