    Opinions please

    on BMW's SMG transmission ..

    Test driving a M5 tomorrow.. (if I give myself a clear work slot)..

    Also , would you guys go for the new M3 with the standard 6 speed stick , if it were your choice..

    Its for the family ....

    Go for SMG if you dont mind the traffic. But it is more practical than E-gear in traffic. But E-gear is more fun for me on free way

    Hi Throt if it's a used M5.. No touchy without full warrranty! Their issues can get way $$$$$$$ to fix.

    The stick is so good on the M3, and if u get lazy u can
    always redline it and then slam it into the next gear without using the clutch pedal.

    New M3 with standard manual for me. About new M DCT(late spring 2008)-we need to see how reliable will it be.

    BTW, M5/M6 are the last BMW cars with SMG(actually SMGIII), after them NO more SMG.

    I'd go for the M5 with SMG- probably better in the big city ,and for the wifey.

    To all the above , thanks so much for your help...

    Did not get down to test it ,, typical , way too busy...Might check it out Saturday (if I can locate the demo , it left the dealership Tuesday)..Oh yes , it will be a new one , so the SMG will be covered for any trouble times..Still would have loved to checked out the M3 in the flesh though , but thats not their till September , we will see..

    I am going to get the M DCT on the M3 when it comes out. SMG is not that smooth relative to twin clutch set up but much better than E gear on Lambo.

    Love the different SMGs in my M3 and M5

    both are amazing to drive and very capable once you get the hang on them, even in auto mode.

    People that discount the automatic modes on smgs are probably the type that should be driving a slushbox anyway.
