    997 Turbo vs Cayman S

Before I put my flame suit on, I like to congratulate all those lucky owners of the new turbo. Awesome car in all respects. Now, I have a friend who wants to order a new turbo after taking a test drive, but last week he borrowed my Cayman S and he was very surprised about the driving experience. Now he is having second thoughts. There is no question that the turbo is a quicker, bigger car, but he said that no matter how much faster the turbo was, driving the cayman S was more fun and involving, what a "sports car" should be (his words). You "feel" it going fast. For those of you that have tested both, what is your take? Is it the engine noise rumbling just behind the back, my louder TUBI catback, or just the fact that the Turbo is a fast yet more of a GT car? I suggested him to test also the GT3, although marginally slower thant the TT, might be more involving. He has the money and he does not care buying status or the top of the line model. He wants a Porsche car period, but new ... Saludos amigos.

Re: 977 Turbo vs Cayman S

997 GT3 all the way for the 'maximum' experience.

Re: 977 Turbo vs Cayman S

I test drove both before buying and am now the proud and very happy owner of a 997tt. Both are great and exceptionally well engineered vehicles, each with reasons why and why-not to buy one vs. the other. At the end of the day, the decision is personal and his to make. My advice? If you can afford the 997tt, don't hesitate to buy it. It will not disappoint.

Re: 977 Turbo vs Cayman S

The Cayman S is a great little sportscar, no doubt about it. Comparing it to the 997 Turbo however is...well, how should I put it...senseless. To drive the 997 Turbo at the limit requires a pro driver, to drive the Cayman S at the limit requires a very good driver. I hope you understand the difference. The advantage of the Cayman S is it's weight and middle engine setup. Both make the Cayman pretty agile and some people may get the feeling that the Cayman is faster in tight turns and curves than the Turbo. This is a feeling only. There isn't much difference between both cars, even if the Cayman may squeeze out 2-3 km more in a slalom. Only a pro driver can do that.

That said, the Cayman S is a nice toy but not the driving machine I would buy for myself. The 997 Turbo wasn't my first choice, I actually wanted to get a 997 GT3RS first. After a lot of thinking (wife, kids, PSM, rear seats, AWD, winter time, etc.), I decided to go for the 997 Turbo. It is the hell of a ride and I'm very happy with it, would NEVER EVER exchange it with a Cayman or even 997 Carrera S, not to mention the 997 GT3. The 997 GT3RS is still tempting and the new GT2 also somehow sounds great but right now, I'm "stuck" to the 997 Turbo and I enjoy each and every day in it.

There is a very simple explanation to that: your Cayman is modified with 350hp and loud as hell. of course it is going to feel faster than the TT. I drive a boxster with a very loud GHL exhaust and even to me it sometimes feels sportier than my TT which also has a (less) loud exhaust.
It is a very subjective feeling and you cannot compare the two until you watch them together on the same track.
I have a friend with a Cayman S and I have played with him several times on both highway and mountain roads, it wasn't even funny. different cars for different purposes, if your friend likes to AX the car then Cayman it is, otherwise TT all the way, no question.

Re: 997 Turbo vs Cayman S

RC, that is nicely said :P
    i can't imagine having a 2 seater with a wife and kids.

However, is AWD really that much better on snow..?

Re: 997 Turbo vs Cayman S

How could you even compare the two, there is no comparison. Cayman is a gr8 car while not my not favorite but comparing it to the TT is just insane. Not the same class of cars.

Re: 997 Turbo vs Cayman S

My two cents: I have a 986S (260hp) it is "fun" to drive; you never feel like you're going to screw up when you get frisky. The 911 used to scare me alot (when I first got it); never felt scared in 986s. For serious road use my 997S is better. To pass cars with Boxster is tricky but doable, to pass with Carrera you just flip it into third and stomp on the gas. So when your friend test drove both cars (TT and Cayman) for the first time he was noticing the obvious differences. What happens is this: my Boxster stays in the garage alot while I mostly drive the 997S. I can imagine the 997S being similarly "retired" if I got my Turbo tomorrow. FWIW... .

Re: 997 Turbo vs Cayman S

MMD, how come you've still kept the 986S? Does another family member use it? If not, why not trade it and your 997S in and get that 997TT that you have been yearning for!

I kept it because it's soooooo pretty, there's no shortage of parking and it is silver and matches the new 997S.

LOL. TT is in the future with 997S as a trade in, though (that's a no-brainer).

Re: 997 Turbo vs Cayman S

I'm coming off a Boxster S that I traded in for a 997TT (built, should be on a boat tomorrow, hopefully). I have really enjoyed the Boxster S and appreciate the agility and lightness. I realize that the Turbo is a different beast altogether, but, unlike some here, I'm not able (and no plans) to take advantage of either of these at the limit. I fully expect to enjoy the Turbo even more than my Boxster, but I admit some apprehension. I wish the d***ed car would get here already so I could find out!

Re: 997 Turbo vs Cayman S

That's going to be quite a jump upwards in performance from the Boxster S to the 997TT. You are one lucky guy! Enjoy it when it comes!

Re: 997 Turbo vs Cayman S

I have a 993C2 (lowered with H&R) and my 997TT is a much different car...more agressive but smoother. However I can feel the weight of the 997TT, however it doesn't seem to affect the car at least the way I drive which isn't anywhere near the limit. I'm sure you will like your new 997TT...just get the exhaust mod for starters.

Re: 997 Turbo vs Cayman S

He should buy the GT3 for the best of all worlds. It's cool that he is open minded.

Re: 997 Turbo vs Cayman S

I changed countries, sold my 996 C4S, bought a Cayman S (and I love it), and will buy a 997 GT3 RS with PDK in 20XX. Done 1500km in Cayman S, think it's the best value for $ car in that league.
