Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

I've recently moved to Greenwich and I'm still exploring the area. Any tips for some great driving roads around here?
If there is a good destination - like a great place for brunch, would be even better.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

I just got back from a spirited drive from Westchester up the Merrit(Rt 15) to Meriden,CT, where my Dad is buried. Its a great run...few places for hiding, and some nice curves.Even the run from Merrit to Greenwich center on north St. Exit 31 can be fun. I really like Rt. 15 though.

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

Thanks for the suggestion. The Merrit is fun, but I was thinking of more like winding back roads. I'm sure there are some, I'll just have to find it
    Thanks again

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

There are some nice back roads in Wilton and the surrounding area. Northern Westchester as well.

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

    Hi Paul

Greenwich has great backroads, so does wilton/etc.

But watch out for the cops, theres ALWAYS one on the faster roads. These towns don't care who you are, you're getting a ticket.

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

Thanks for the suggestions. Any specific roads that I could look for?

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

I read an article last year on driving/weekend getaway type trips and they mentioned two. Route 6 in PA which goes across the state and into Ohio. considered one of the 10 best roads in the U.S. I will be flying to Ohio to pick up my TT and will be taking 6 back home.

The other road in the article was in CT. I thought it was Rte. 1 or 9 (sorry, I can't remember). I do remember that it said it ran parallel to I95 and it went all the way up to Montreal. Check out a AAA map - they have "scenic" roads designated. YOur local AAA office will have the maps for all states.

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

I live in Greenwich. My favorite drive is Route 8. Take the Merritt (15) to Trumbull and connect with Route 8 North. The first part of 8 to Waterbury is less interesting but after that 8 becomes a sweeping 2 lane highway with curves and changes of elevation. Take it until it ends and either come back the same way or head west into Litchfield county and take back roads to Danbury then Route 84 and 684 home.

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

Drive about 45 min north into New York just south of Poughkeepsie...

    Omeko and Moogle can attest....Millbrook...

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

Welcome to town! Try Round Hill Road or North Street heading north into Westchester, connecting to 22N, left onto S Bedford Road, then onto 684 North where it seems that MINIMUM speed is 80 mph! Follow 684 until it ends on 22N again and follow that road into Amenia, NY and go right onto Route 343 into Sharon, CT. Turn left onto Rte 41 north, then right onto Rte 112 for about 3 miles. Lo and behold you will end up at Lime Rock Park! Total travel time is about 90 minutes.

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

If you want to drive really far north, VT has some amazing roads never any police or People.

Here are a few - enjoy:
    1. Bear Mountain - drive to the top.
    2. Seven Lakes Region
    3. Rt.301 between Cold Spring and Carmel
    4. Rt.9w going north from Bear Mountain, towards Newburgh
    5. West Point Rt.218
    6. Rt.7 in Connecticut, North of Kent, up to almost Canaan
    7. Rt.9? (on west side of Hudson) from Bear Mountain Bridge, going south.

I've just provided you with some of the best routes you'll find anywhere. Most are 2nd/3rd gear roads (at least in my Turbo Tip). Enjoy with care.

#7 should have read: East side of Hudson rather than West side.

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

Bear Mountain and Harriman State Park are both very nice; quite a lot of roads with nice scenary. Just avoid in the warm months on weekends, unless you get there very early.

I was just there two weekends ago and it was beautiful - warm (top down) weather and very limited crowds.

Rt 9D north from the Bear Mtn Bridge is also very pretty, although not particularly exhilerating to drive.

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

Lived in NYC for several yrs and roads cited were best I could find within 75mis of Manhattan...(Greenwich region grub is about as weak as grub in LA/Lond/SilicVy, so would be rather skeptical re: any road food recs )...a non-helpful obsvn is that these "best" roads in Greenwich region are awfully lame vs best driving roads/twisties well within 50mis of SF's fin dt/BevHills (perhaps explains why so many car-oriented hedgies I know fled NYC/Greenwich for SF/LA as soon as their career allowed )....

BTW, seems that most car-oriented Greenwich hedgies are generous donors to relevant law enfcmt organizations/philanthropies....

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

I have driven just about every road in CT at least once. The most fun is the merritt, because it is so tight and curvy the closer you get to NY. The traffic moves pretty quick and the narrowness of the road along with all the shade from the dense trees makes it fun. The state is just too built-up and cop heavy for any relaxed driving.

Like schao says, take the the round hill road exit off merritt up thru horse country to ridgefield and up to litchfield for a sunday drive.

Essex, Ct and Mystic, Ct. are great destinations with a lot to see and do. . Can't beat a spring weekend in Newport RI.

But for driving do what omeko said, Vermont is the drivers state, Woodstock south thru ludlow, grafton, and townshend is awesome.

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

I don't live too far from the Merritt, but not close enough to take my P-car either. I drive to NYC a lot for biz (Audi A6) and the Merritt is a blast. I don't know any other roads, but I would like to experience the Merritt in my cab someday! I think the other respondents certainly better than I do, but I would recommend the Merritt!

    Cheers,

    Kenny S

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

Thank you all for your recommendations. This next weekend sounds promissing weather wise, so I'll go and check out some of the suggested roads

Re: Favorite Driving Roads in Southern CT

i live in Greenwich and eco much of what the others have said, I work in wilton so play on the merrit offten, great ely mornings!! As far as top end runs, I like 684 noth towards danbury, some really long streaches where you can check for cops and then let her rrrrippp. Enjoy Greenwich but depending on what you drive, highly recommend befriending a local officer and get a courtesy card (I have used mine twice since picking up my GT3 and has got me out of trouble. :-)
